Abstract

The visual comfort of classrooms in schools can be increased through proper lighting so that it can have a positive effect on student learning activities. The quality of lighting in school classrooms can be achieved by maximizing natural lighting, which can contribute to the health, comfort and productivity of students in addition to reducing operational costs. The performance of natural lighting that occurs in schools is important to know, especially in areas with potential natural lighting such as in Pontianak City, so that it can be considered in the design of school buildings in the future. This paper aims to provide results of natural lighting performance in classrooms in several school buildings in Pontianak City. The study was conducted on 4 school buildings in Pontianak City using direct measurements reinforced by simulation. The results showed that most of the natural lighting of the classrooms had met the requirements needed for teaching and learning activities, especially in sunny weather conditions. However, there is a risk of glare in the seating area on the side next to the window. Cloudy weather conditions also show the DF value which is at 1-1.5% so that the utilization of natural lighting in these conditions is not optimal.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country that has managed to improve the ranking of the Global Innovation Index in 2022, where this is influenced by the linkage of innovation and intangible assets through improving the quality of human resources. Singkawang City is one of the cities that has this potential in the province of West Kalimantan. Where this city as a whole has quite a high interest in sports and tourist activities, especially in the field of sports. However, so far Singkawang City does not have adequate sports facilities and infrastructure and can be used as a tourist destination. This indirectly requires many flexible architectural buildings so that they are not only built to fulfill a function of the building itself. Therefore, the need for a sports arena as a place to provide various kinds of sports facilities and at the same time become a flexible tourist destination. Departing from the needs and the problem gave an idea to the author in making a Design of a Sports Arena in Singkawang City with an iconic architectural approach. The design method used is the glass-box method as a form of effort to solve problems transparently. The result of the design is to be able to create a sports arena to meet the needs of sports facilities to improve the quality of human resources with an iconic and flexible design form in accommodating the needs of space use in the Singkawang City area.

Abstract

Sintang District, located in West Kalimantan, has the potential to become the provincial capital in the effort to expand the Greater Kapuas Province. In order to accelerate the realization of community welfare, the government of Sintang District seeks to meet the community's need for access to information and knowledge. Currently, Sintang District has one regional library, but based on observations, the existing library experiences several problems that result in less efficient functioning of the library. Therefore, a new construction of the Sintang Regency Regional Library is needed to overcome this problem. The design of this library aims to meet the needs and activities of the community, as well as support the entire process of library activities. The design process begins with data collection, analysis, and synthesis, which then produces pre-design drawings and detailed engineering design. In this design, an in-depth analysis of the cultural and physical context of Sintang Regency is carried out, so that the library design adopts traditional architectural elements. The result of this design is the Sintang Regency Regional Library building which has one building mass with a stage floor, equipped with a Dayak-patterned secondary skin at the front. The library is designed with comfortable reading rooms and supporting facilities, and integrates neo vernacular architectural values. This approach was chosen to create a building that is not only functional as an information center, but also reflects local cultural identity and creates harmony with the surrounding environment.

Abstract

Tourism is an important sector for national revenue, and West Kalimantan holds significant potential, particularly in Sanggau Regency, which features the flagship destination of Sipatn Lotup Hot Springs the only natural hot spring in the province. Strategically located on the border with Sarawak, Malaysia, this site has strong potential to attract both domestic and international tourists. However, inadequate management and a lack of supporting infrastructure have hindered its development. To address these issues, a landscape design approach based on Contextual Architecture is proposed, focusing on environmental harmony and sustainable development. The proposed solution involves dividing the area into six functional zones: reception, management, tourism, commercial, accommodation, and supporting facilities. The design process consists of four main stages: identification of the design object, data collection, analysis and synthesis, and final design development. The objective is to create a tourist area that is comfortable, functional, and sustainable, while maximizing its natural potential. This approach is expected to enhance the quality of the destination and provide long-term benefits to the tourism sector in Sanggau Regency.

Abstract

Public services play a strategic role in supporting effective and accountable governance. However, the quality of public services in Indonesia still faces various challenges, such as low service standards, limited supporting facilities, and the absence of an integrated service hub. Melawi Regency, as a relatively new autonomous region in West Kalimantan Province, also experiences similar conditions, where no integrated service center is yet available despite the increasing demand for public services. This situation has led to low public satisfaction with basic services and decreased bureaucratic efficiency. To address these challenges, the Melawi Regency Government has planned the development of a Public Service Mall (Mal Pelayanan Publik/MPP) as a solution to integrate cross-sectoral services within a single complex. The design process of the MPP was carried out through a rational approach that includes needs analysis, policy studies, and space program formulation based on the principles of integration and efficiency. The design concept emphasizes accessibility, social interaction, connectivity, and user comfort as the main criteria of the placemaking approach, while also considering local identity by adopting the traditional architectural form of the Dayak’s Rumah Betang. The implementation of this MPP is in line with national policy directions on public service reform based on community needs and the principles of good governance, and it is expected to improve service quality, accelerate bureaucratic processes, and strengthen public trust in local government.

Abstract

Technological developments in the era of globalization influence the mindset, behavior, and lifestyle of adolescents, including in Pontianak City. The number of adolescents in Pontianak City has the potential for achievement, interests, and talents but also faces challenges such as delinquency, sexual violence, and unemployment. Available facilities are inadequate to support their self-development, creativity, and mental health. This study designs a Youth Center as a place for education, creation, and recreation with a social architecture approach that emphasizes openness and connectivity. The design method refers to the systematic J.C. Jones (1972) through the stages of ideas, information, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The design is realized through an open, connected, and interactive architectural design. The building is designed with a clear main mass, an amphitheater as a meeting center for adolescents with various characters in watching performances and green open areas and recreation/sports areas integrated with the site. The application of social architecture principles is reflected in the transparent facade, depicting adolescents and localistic, flexible public spaces, and circulation that connects zones harmoniously, thus forming a spatial identity that supports creativity, collaboration, and adolescent growth

Abstract

This study aims to understand the settlement patterns and characteristics of the Dayak Mualang community in Empajak Village, Belitang Hilir District, Sekadau Regency, and to analyze the cultural and livelihood factors that influence it. By understanding these settlement patterns, the characteristics of the Dayak Mualang settlements in the area can also be revealed in more depth. Therefore, the study of the patterns and characteristics of the Dayak Mualang settlements is a crucial way to see the specific values of Empajak Village, which contains cultural richness and customary orders that have shaped the unique characteristics of the Dayak Mualang community. The background of the problem shows that the formation of settlements is strongly influenced by cultural aspects, including customary norms, history, livelihood systems, and social structures. However, in the era of globalization, the identity and locality of indigenous settlements are vulnerable to change. This study uses a qualitative approach with a rationalistic approach. Data analysis is carried out interactively through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the Dayak Mualang settlement pattern in Empajak Village tends to be clustered or linear, strongly influenced by the tradition of communal life, the concept of Temawang Tampun Juah (ancestral inheritance land managed together), and dependence on water sources and land for farming and gardening activities. The settlement's characteristics are characterized by the presence of the Betang House as a communal and spiritual center, the use of local materials, and a spatial layout that reflects kinship and mutual cooperation activities. Despite facing external influences, the Dayak Mualang community demonstrates selective adaptation and efforts to revitalize traditions to maintain their settlement identity. This research is expected to contribute to the understanding of traditional architecture and settlements, as well as serve as a basis for efforts to preserve local culture.

Abstract

Madu Sari Village is a village in Sungai Raya District that has a large area of land in the form of peat, with the potential to become a village that produces horticultural commodities. Madu Sari Village can supply ±600 pineapples per week when it is not in season and ±2,000 pineapples per week when it is in season. This village can be further developed to become an agrotourism destination. The formulation of the problem for this final assignment is "What are the facilities needed and their design to realize pineapple agrotourism in Madu Sari Village, Kubu Raya Regency, as an agrotourism-based tourism destination?" The aim of designing this final project is to develop a design concept that can be used as a reference for the development of effective and efficient agrotourism to accommodate activities and provide tourist facilities. The design method used in solving problems in agrotourism design uses the five-step design process method in the book "Introduction to Architecture" (Snyder and Catanese, 1984). Referring to the potential and existing conditions of the area, the site concept was developed through the Open Space concept, which resulted in a building design consisting of three regional zones, namely the reception zone, recreation zone, and education zone. The results of this design are expected to have an impact on the community, especially pineapple farmers in Madu Sari Village, as well as improving the economy and pineapple cultivation as a tourism development in Kubu Raya Regency in the form of a design reference based on human potential, site potential, and natural potential.

Abstract

Sports are essential activities that play a vital role in improving public health, fitness, and overall well-being. However, Indonesia’s national fitness level remains relatively low due to the limited and uneven distribution of sports facilities across regions. Kubu Raya Regency in West Kalimantan shows an increasing need for adequate sports facilities, in line with population growth, rising athletic achievements, and the active role of local sports organizations. Moreover, the absence of a central public space causes the community to lack an accessible area for interaction and shared activities. In response, the design of a Type B Sport Center in Kubu Raya aims to accommodate various activities such as competitions, training, and recreation while also serving as an open public space that supports social interaction and local economic growth. Using the public open space function approach, the Sport Center is designed to be open, easily accessible, and complemented by recreational areas such as pedestrian paths, gardens, and commercial zones. Its dynamic architectural form creates visual appeal and interactive spatial experiences without disrupting its primary sports function. This design applies John Christopher Jones’s five design stages—idea, information, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation—ensuring a systematic and contextual process. The Sport Center is expected to become a strategic facility that strengthens regional identity and enhances social connectivity in Kubu Raya.
