There are persistent increasing number of scenarios in Singer and Dawanau markets of Kano metropolis which are seen as unethical among which includes deception, inappropriate weight and measures, hoarding and price manipulation as well as false-swearing to support a sale. This study therefore assesses the determinants of Islamic business ethics practices among Muslim entrepreneurs in Kano metropolis, Nigeria. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) technique is employed in analysing the hypothesized model of the study. The results indicate that entrepreneurs fairly adhere to Islamic business ethics practice while legal and organizational factors significantly affect Islamic business ethics, but Individual factors do not. The study recommends the need for Kano State Ministry of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with market organizational leaders to engage in public enlightenment on the importance of business as an act of worship (Ibadat). It was suggested that organization leaders i.e. Market leaders (trade union leaders) should liaise with Kano state Shariah Commission to set standard for Islamic business ethics whereas Hisbah Board to enforce compliance. The study further suggests that the concept of ethics should be incorporated in teaching and learning curriculum.

Cash waqf was introduced as an alternative for individuals who do not have an immovable asset but rather have the cash to donate as waqf. It can be observed, however, that Muslims in Kano State narrow their perception of waqf only to be in the form of a kind but not in cash. It is to say that public awareness and understanding of cash waqf are insignificant. Therefore, this study aims to assess factors influencing the intention to accept cash waqf among entrepreneurs in the Kano metropolis with particular reference to Singer Market. The study employed partial least square–structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and was theoretically guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Structured survey questionnaires were administered to 379 respondents whom were registered entrepreneurs in Singer Market based on a convenience non-probability sampling technique. Descriptive statistics using charts and tables were employed to analyze the demographic information, while data collected from the respondents were analyzed utilizing AMOS, version 21. The study uncovered that perceived behavioral control and religiosity significantly influenced the intention to accept cash waqf among entrepreneurs in Singer Market in Kano Metropolis, while awareness and attitude did not. This paper recommends that the management of the Kano State Zakat and Hubsi Commission (KSZHC) should establish sensitization programs to create awareness and promote cash waqf for the public to mobilize more potential waqf donors in the state.

The institution of zakah is the cornerstone of the Islamic economic system and the disbursement of the zakah fund in line with the Qur’anic injunction ensures equitable distribution and transfer of wealth from the rich to the poor. However, zakah practice in many Muslim countries left wide gap especially in realizing the goal of zakah in poverty reduction. For instance, zakah on employment income is largely neglected despite its juristic backing and changing economic structure that creates high professional income earners that form either upper middle class or lower middle class of the society. The objective of this paper is to explore the intention of income earners to pay zakah on their employment income in Kano State as this will add to the zakatable sources of the State Zakah commission. The paper employed Theory of Reasoned Action to examine the behavioral intention of 300 academics across Kano state government owned tertiary educational institutions to pay zakah on their income. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data collected. The overall result shows that the respondents have favorable behavioral intention towards payment of zakah on employment income. Specifically, the positive effect of both attitudinal beliefs and subjective norm on the behavioral intention is revealed. Hence, the need to come up with a comprehensive policy that will boost zakah collection, consequently its distribution to reduce extreme poverty in the state.

Islamic Social finance is an emerging area of study and practice, different from commercial finance. It concerns about financing members of the community or country for socio-economic development. However, it faces the challenge of sustainability either due to legal or regulatory framework or due to lack of awareness among members of the society. The history of Islamic social finance in Nigeria connects back to the revivalism of Islam through Shehu Uthman Bin Fodio in 1804. Recently, with the establishment of Zakat and Endowment Committee in Sokoto in 2007, there was an increasing awareness and practice in the contemporary Islamic Social Finance, especially when the Government converts the Committee into Commission in 2016 which makes it independence to initiate and execute its policies. The objective of this paper is to examine two of its recently executed projects vis-à-vis Youth and Women Empowerment programs. The study uses qualitative technique for data collection and analysis. Two focus group sessions were conducted with the Youth and Women entrepreneurs who benefitted from the empowerment programs by the SZEC. The study finds that the Youth have been able to harness their potentials by expanding their businesses and upgrading the quality of their products and services such as shoe repair due the skills acquired in the training. Moreover, the women have improved their welfare and that of their children to an unprecedented level. They were able to maintain their chosen business as livelihood of income. However, they reveal that, marketing of their finished products is the major challenge they face.

As Islamic banking continues to expand beyond its traditional markets, the integrity of Sharia compliance emerges as a central concern within global financial governance. Nevertheless, much research revealed that Sharia supervision was still weak and not optimal. The research objective of this paper was to formulate a reconstruction of Sharia supervisors in Islamic banking as a solution to the Sharia supervision problem in Islamic banking, which was still considered weak and had not been optimal. This research was qualitative with a library research design. Based on the study conducted, the reconstruction of sharia supervisors as a solution to the problems of sharia supervision was carried out to overcome the problems of competence, independence, and effectiveness of supervisory performance. The reconstruction formulation was related to the certification of the Sharia Supervisory Board with the addition of training material on legislation and legal regulations for business and the financial industry, as well as strengthening the profession, the establishment of Sharia supervisory board regulations with provisions on the right to impose sanctions, then the decentralization of sharia supervisors with the formation of the Sharia Supervisory Secretariat of representative in the province with authority as regional coordinator.
