Abstract

Background: Plaque can inhibit the antibacterial activity of salivary function, which can damage the periodontal tissue. Several preventive measures can be done to control plaque, mechanically or chemically. Mechanical plaque control in combination with chemical plaqie control such as toothpaste can reduce plaque. The role of SLS in toothpaste which can facilitate plaque detachment from the tooth surface. Herbal toothpaste has been developed using herbal ingredients that have antibacterial properties as black cumin (Nigella sativa). The contents of black cumin, thymoquinone, thymol, and tannins, have been proven to be effective in inhibiting the growth of plaque bacteria. Purpose: This study aims to identify the inhibitory ability of black cumin toothpaste extract containing detergent compared to black cumin extract toothpaste without detergent on the growth of supragingival plaque bacteria. Methods: This research method of diffusion of wells on BHIB media was conducted in four research groups namely negative control, cumin paste with SLS, non SLS cumin paste, and SLS and carried out bacterial planting on MHA media. Next measure the diameter of the inhibition zone around the well. Results: There was a significant difference in each group against the inhibitory growth of supragingival plaque bacteria on the Oneway ANOVA test results (p <0.05) Conclusion: Black cumin extract toothpaste containing 2% of detergent has better inhibition against supragingival plaque bacteria than non cumin detergent 3% black cumin toothpaste.

Abstract

Dental health education for school children is an effective strategy in preventing the occurrence of dental and oral diseases. Dental health education is a primary preventive measure carried out before a disease occurs. One effort that can be made to increase school children's knowledge and skills in brushing their teeth is by using audio-visual media. This media is not only effective in conveying information directly, but can also be used as an outreach tool that can be disseminated widely. The use of this technology can increase the audience's absorption and understanding, especially children who tend to be more responsive to visual media. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of using educational videos on brushing teeth on the knowledge and skills of Berbt Elementary School students. Muhammadiyah Berua, Makassar City. This type of research is quantitative research with a quasi-experimental approach. The sampling technique used was total sampling in all 6th grade classes at SD Berbt. Muhammadiyah II Berua has 36 students. Research Results Shows that the use of educational videos on brushing teeth significantly increases elementary school students' knowledge about the importance of maintaining oral health and the use of educational videos also significantly increases students' practical skills in brushing teeth.

Abstract

The results of the Basic Health Research (2018) stated that the Indonesian population with oral problems aged 55-64 years was 61.9% and aged 65 years was 54.2%. Some changes in teeth and oral cavity that are often found in the elderly are tooth loss which results in impaired food digestion, pain / pain in the teeth due to periodontal tissue and root caries, reduced vertical dimensions of artificial teeth, gingivitis and various other abnormalities. It is hoped that after being given oral health education through an innovation program in the form of a stroke elderly companion link or what is called “LIPSIAS” can increase the knowledge of stroke elderly on how to maintain their oral health through the help of a companion so that it can have a good influence on their dental hygiene. Research Objectives: Producing a dental and oral health maintenance program through empowering elderly companions in the form of the LIPSIAS Application as a medium for promoting oral health in the Elderly Social Service Home. Using Quantitative methods with pre-experiment research design (one group pretest and posttest design). The sampling technique was purposive sampling consisting of 14 elderly stroke at the Elderly Social Services Home. Results: The results of the statistical test showed P value 0.05, meaning that there was a significant difference in the knowledge of dental and oral health maintenance of stroke elderly before and after being given the LIPSIAS application intervention. Before treatment, the average value of knowledge of stroke elderly was 4.07 (poor category) increased to 8 (good category). The LIPSIAS application is effective in increasing the knowledge of stroke elderly about how to maintain oral health through companion assistance

Abstract

Dental and oral health problems in Indonesia have increased based on the results of the 2007 Basic Health Research by 43.4% to 53.3% in 2013 and by 57.6% in 2018. The prevalence of caries in South Sulawesi is 55.54%, in Makassar City by 52.09%, and in the 5-9 year age group by 65.51%. Dental caries often occurs in children because they tend to like sweet foods and drinks and do not clean them. Caries in children can be influenced by factors such as poor eating habits, tooth brushing habits, and rarely checking with a dentist. School-age children usually like sweet foods, such as candy, chocolate, and cakes. These sweet foods are high in carbohydrates which are prone to causing caries. Caries if left untreated can have a negative impact on the quality of life of children both physically and psychologically, from adolescence to adulthood. The effects of caries can cause periodontal disease, which is a severe infection of the gums and bones that support the teeth. The purpose of this study was to determine the analysis of the risk of dental caries based on the consumption of cariogenic foods in elementary school children. This research method uses a survey with a cross-sectional approach, starting from measuring caries using direct examination with a status card and children's consumption habits using a questionnaire. Data were tested using anova and chi-square. The results showed that the incidence of dental caries based on the consumption of cariogenic foods was most commonly found, namely moderate caries rates and moderate cariogenic food consumption of 14 people (28%). The conclusion is that there is a relationship between cariogenic food consumption and the risk of dental caries. Keywords: Risk of dental caries; cariogenic foods
