Abstract

Abstract. The objective of this study is to examine the persuasive communication strategies employed by religious counselors in fostering religious tolerance among communities, as well as to identify the challenges they face and their efforts to overcome these challenges. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilising purposive sampling to select participants. Data were gathered through interviews, observations, and document analysis, and analysed by means of data reduction techniques. The findings indicate that religious counselors employ persuasive communication strategies, including psychodynamic approaches to enhance emotional engagement during counseling sessions, sociocultural strategies by aligning counseling activities with the cultural norms of the Karo community in Berastagi, and meaning construction strategies to deepen understanding of religious tolerance among the populace. However, counselors face challenges, including their own limitations, strong adherence to local customs and traditions among the community, and alignment with national regulations concerning inter-religious tolerance and real-life incidents. Religious counsellors have made efforts to educate the community about the nation's foundational principles and to foster positive relationships with local residents. It is recommended that future research explore novel communication strategies from diverse perspectives in order to enrich the repertoire of creative and effective communication activities in community counselling. Keywords: Persuasive, Religious Counselor, Tolerant of Religious Communities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine an effective guidance and counseling service model in preventing the spread of radicalism among students of the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication of UIN North Sumatra. This research focuses on identifying the potential emergence of radicalism characterized by dissatisfaction with government policies, which is often expressed through demonstrations. The method used is a qualitative approach with interviews and observations of students and lecturers at the faculty. The results showed that structured guidance and counseling interventions, including orientation services, individual counseling, group counseling, and multicultural counseling, were able to increase students' awareness of the negative impact of radicalization. In addition, the role of faculty leaders in supervising and enforcing sanctions against potentially extreme activities is also very important. This article concludes that the implementation of a comprehensive guidance and counseling service model is not only effective in preventing radicalization, but also contributes to the formation of a more tolerant and inclusive student character. Recommendations are given for further development in the implementation of guidance programs that can reach all students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Islamic communication strategies by mediators at the Mahkamah Syar’iyah (Sharia Court) of Bireuen Regency, Indonesia, in mediating divorce petition cases. The background of this research lies in the high number of divorce cases filed annually, while the mediation success rate remains relatively low. The study employs a qualitative approach through field research. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with the Chief Judge of the Mahkamah Syar’iyah and mediator judges, supported by the examination of official court documents. The findings reveal that although Islamic communication principles, such as hikmah (wisdom), mau’izhah hasanah (good counsel), and mujadalah billati hiya ahsan (best form of debate), have been incorporated into the mediation process, their implementation still faces significant challenges, including limited human resources, the absence of specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and the diverse socio-cultural backgrounds of the parties involved. Nevertheless, Islamic communication strategies have proven effective in fostering constructive dialogue, promoting mutual respect, and offering fair solutions aligned with Islamic law. The study recommends enhancing mediator capacity, strengthening technical regulations, and developing standardized procedures to improve mediation success rates in the future.

Abstract

This study examines how spiritual values articulated by Ustaz Neezam Al-Banjari are translated into lived social practices within a contemporary Malaysian community. While spirituality in Islam emphasizes the integration of devotion and social responsibility, its internalization does not automatically generate transformative social behavior. Using a qualitative case study design, this research explores how salawat-centered da‘wah is internalized and embodied within Raudhah Muhibbin (Dewan Selawat Taman Mahabbah). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, involving fourteen informants selected purposively. The findings reveal five interconnected spiritual orientations: devotion through salawat, lived simplicity, inclusive ukhuwah, communicative adab, and social responsibility. Salawat functions as an affective mechanism shaping emotional regulation and moral awareness. Simplicity fosters relational legitimacy, while inclusive gatherings strengthen communal solidarity. Emphasis on adab moderates social interaction, and spiritual devotion is externalized through collective service initiatives. The study concludes that spiritual leadership becomes socially transformative when emotional internalization, relational trust, and embodied ethical practice converge within sustained communal engagement.
