Abstract

Low understanding of concepts is one of the classic problems faced in learning science content in elementary schools. This study was conducted to test the use of visual multimedia supported scientific explanation text (VMS-SEText) in learning science content to obtain a depiction of its effectiveness in improving elementary students' conceptual understanding of the direct current circuits. Scientific Explanation text is written in computer format and the visual multimedia used in the text includes phenomenon videos, virtual animation, and dynamic analogies. The method used in this study was pre-experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects were 80 students from several elementary schools in West Java Province. The data collection instrument used in this research was two types of conceptual understanding test related to the concept of direct current circuits, namely V-Type and F-Type test. The results showed that the use of VMS-SEText could facilitate around 65% of elementary school students to achieve an understanding of the concept of electrical circuits at the sound understanding level. These results indicate that the use of visual multimedia supported scientific explanation text has a moderate effectiveness in improving elementary students' conceptual understanding of direct current circuits.

Abstract

One of the reasons why climate change is a contentious socioscientific topic is the swift advancement of research and technology. Based on sound judgment, controlling climate change becomes an urgent matter. This study intends to gain an overview of the factual circumstances of elementary school pupils' decision-making skills with reference to the subject of combating climate change. Descriptive quantitative research methodology is employed. The test is a multiple-choice test with 10 questions that were created using criteria for rational decision-making. 612 pupils at ten public elementary schools in the city of Bandung took the test offline. Descriptive statistics were used to assess the data and categorize it in accordance with the rationale for decision-making. The study's findings show that judgments about climate change are difficult for elementary school pupils to make. Most of their decisions are made using intuitive principles. This study has implications for the significance of discussing climate change with elementary school pupils and having them practice making critical decisions.

Abstract

Abstract

The implementation of the deep learning approach in elementary school learning is a major challenge, especially in terms of compiling teaching materials that support the principles of deep learning: conscious, meaningful, and joyful. This community service activity aims to improve teachers' understanding and competence in compiling teaching materials that integrate deep learning. The method used is a workshop based on direct training, involving 20 teachers from several elementary schools in Cimahi City. The workshop was carried out through theoretical presentations, group discussions, and practices in compiling teaching materials in accordance with the principles of deep learning. The results of the community service showed a significant increase in understanding the concept of deep learning, as reflected in the difference in pre- and post-workshop test scores. In addition, teachers' competence in compiling teaching materials that integrate deep learning also increased, based on the analysis of the assessment rubric for the teaching materials that were prepared. The conclusion of this activity is that practice-based training is effective in improving teachers' understanding and skills in designing learning that is in accordance with the principles of deep learning, so that it can improve the quality of education in elementary schools.
