Abstract

This study aims: 1) to reveal types of code mixing that appeared in the Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika 2 movie and 2) to find out factors that cause code mixing in this movie. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting data, this research applied note-taking as an instrument. To obtain data, the dialogues of the characters were analyzed thoroughly. Researchers implemented the theory of code-mixing by Muysken (2000) to find the types and the view of code-mixing factors from Hoffman (1991) for the analysis. The research results revealed three types of code mixing contained in this movie. They are insertion type (7 data or 29.17%), alternation type (12 data or 50%), and congruent lexicalization type (5 data or 20.83%). In addition, factors of code-mixing are also found in this movie. They are the lexical needs factor (9 data or 37.5%), emphasize something factor (3 data or 12.5%), talking about a particular topic factor (5 data or 20.83%), repetition used for clarification factor (2 data or 16.64%), soften or strengthen request or command factor (2 data or 8.33%, and expressing group identity factor (1 data or 4.16%). The most common form of code-mixing in this film is alternation when one language is used to fill in for another's lexical gaps throughout a conversation. They spoke in turn, and researchers found that a single sentence may be expressed in two languages with vastly different grammatical structures.

Abstract

This article explores the representation of skepticism in the film "Don't Look Up," highlighting its commentary on contemporary environmental issues. Through a satirical lens, the film portrays the tension between scientific evidence and societal indifference, revealing the complexities of public perception regarding climate change and ecological crises. The purpose of this study is to analyze the signs that represent skepticism in the film. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research using the semiotic theory of Pierce (1906) which consists of representation (sign), object, and interpretation. The researchers found types of representation in the form of 3 types of quali-sign, 15 sin-sign, and 2 legi-sign. The objects in the form 4 types of icons, 13 types of indexes, and a symbol. The interpretation in the form 17 of argument type. The signs that represent skepticism can be found in scenes in the form of dialogue, attributes, movements, and expressions. The film also represented that skepticism has a negative side towards the environment. In addition, this film represents that skepticism can be carried out in all aspects of social circles such as government, media, and society. The film serves as a critical reflection of current attitudes toward environmental challenges, emphasizing the dangers of misinformation and the necessity for collective action. Ultimately, this exploration underscores the film's relevance in stimulating discourse on the urgent need for recognition and response to the climate crisis, encouraging audiences to reconsider their roles in fostering awareness and advocacy in the face of skepticism.

Abstract

Given that researchers aim to publish in prestigious journals, understanding the rhetorical organization of such publications is crucial. While this topic has been extensively studied, existing research has yet to explore how authors in reputable journals engage with prior literature. To fill this gap, the present study intends to analyze how research article authors respond to other earlier literature in their research article introductions (RAIs) published in reputable international applied linguistics journals. This study aims to achieve two objectives: to find out to what extent responding to other earlier literature is important in RAIs, and to discover what types of response authors employ in their RAIs. To achieve these goals, this study employed combined descriptive qualitative and quantitative approaches for analyzing 40 RAIs published in Q1 journals as data sets in the present study. Then, a new analytical framework was designed to respond to the above objectives. The results indicated that responding to other earlier literature is obligatory in RAIs published in reputable international applied linguistics journals. In responding to other earlier literature, authors employed three types of response: either extending other earlier studies, modifying other earlier studies, or establishing a new method, idea, or knowledge. This study offers theoretical contributions by expanding the understanding of how research article authors engage with prior literature within their RAIs. Its practical implications include guiding researchers on effectively utilizing prior literature to establish their research agenda when publishing in reputable journals.

Abstract

Human uses language as a tool to communicate with fellow humans. Language serves the purpose of social control to foster good relationship among people. Establishing effective social control is essential for ensuring clear communication and preventing misunderstandings that may lead to conflicts. Consequently, every individual needs to possess the communicative competence to understand expressions within their respective contexts. As it is crucial to understand speech acts and consider the context of utterances. Speech acts are not only observable in daily life, but can also in movies. Movies are forms of literature that can be utilized to explore various studies, including speech acts. One of most frequently occurring speech acts, both in real life and in movies, is illocutionary acts performed by the characters. This thesis focuses on illocutionary acts within character dialogues. In analyzing illocutionary acts, they are not separated from situational context. In this study, the researcher employs Leech’s Speech Situation theory to identify context and Searle’s illocutionary acts theory. To analyze the data, the researcher uses a Pragmatics approach and a descriptive qualitative method. The results are obtained from movie transcripts, which are then interpreted and explained in detail. Based on the findings of the research, there are five types of illocutionary acts uttered by the characters in True Spirit movie. They are assertives, directives, expressives, commisives, and declarations. Among the illocutionary acts, directives are the most commonly used, whereas declaratives are the least frequently employed.

Abstract

The implementation of English language learning at the elementary school level in Indonesia continues to face significant challenges. One widely proposed solution to address these challenges is the integration of digital technology into English language instruction. The Fun Digital Class program aims to introduce and enhance elementary students’ vocabulary acquisition at SD Inpres Cambaya IV Makassar. Through the use of the Duolingo application, this program provides an engaging and effective method for English vocabulary learning, helping students build a strong foundation in language learning while fostering a positive attitude toward foreign language acquisition, particularly English. This program was conducted over a period of two months and involved 20 students from grades 4 to 6 (aged 10–12 years) who participated in an extracurricular English language program titled Fun Digital Class. The participants were selected using purposive sampling, considering that they shared a similar basic proficiency level in English, which was generally categorized as low. The program was implemented in three phases: the Preparation Phase, the Implementation Phase, and the Evaluation Phase. During its execution, the program successfully stimulated students’ enthusiasm and motivation in learning English vocabulary. As a result, participants demonstrated improved comprehension and mastery of English vocabulary by the end of the program. Furthermore, the majority of students expressed enjoyment and gratitude for the implementation of this program at their school, as it provided them with an engaging and enjoyable English learning experience.
