Abstract

This study explores two social movements in Indonesia to measure the extent to which the locals mobilize towards the center. This objective departs from two contradictory statements, namely 'Global Language' (Crystal, 2003; see also the issue of Linguistic Imperialism) which argues that globalization always moves towards the center and produces uniformity, and another statement which argues that globalization results in varieties and differences (Blommaert, 2007, 2010; Machin & van Leeuwen, 2003; Pennycook, 2006). Therefore, two significant global social movements in Indonesia were chosen in this article. The first one is the social movement of Tragedi Kanjuruhan which started from specific local issues and narratives, and the second one is Global Climate Strike social movement which started from global issues shared by people worldwide. Both social movements have a specific language rhetoric. It is shown through the languages used in each social movement which reflects locality and globality. To examine this mobilization, this study employs scaling or scale measurement as a method (see sociolinguistic scales from Blommaert, 2010; scalar practice from Canagarajah & De Costa, 2016), focusing on scope and value (horizontal and vertical measurement). From the analysis, it is known that the differences in linguistic resources contribute to different elements of locality and mobility which circulates with different motives. In the end, this study can offer valuable insights into understanding how global and local are mobilized in one example of globalization.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the inferiority complex of women characters from various eras based on their stories. This study uses the id, ego, superego, and defense mechanism by Freud and inferiority complex by Heidbreder. Through the descriptive analytical method, this analyze is to help the interpretation of the women characters state of minds including their stress coping mechanism and classify their types of inferior complex. The results of this study shows that Medea had a high tendency to feel insecure as a result of her husband’s betrayal, and she mostly used projection as a defense mechanism to revenge her husband. Meanwhile, Amanda demonstrates the use of identification as a stress escapement from societal pressure, as well as her inferiority complex when faced with a guy caller. Due to the stress of high expectations in attracting gentleman caller, Laura mostly used rationalization as a defense mechanism.

Abstract

Ideally, people should behave in accordance with their own worldview. However, hegemonic practice manipulates people to act in accordance with the ruling class’ interests. This study will examine Antonio Gramsci’s conception of hegemony by scrutinizing the portrayal of hegemonic power in The Handmaid’s Tale novel by Margaret Atwood. The study reveals that the ruling class in the novel uses consent as its main strategy in maintaining its power and coercion as the shield of its hegemonic power. Consent is most depicted by the use of manipulative discourse. It also shows that the ruling class maintains its authority by using privileges, rewards, movies, mass media, songs, Bible, symbolic outfit, and unified language. The occurrence of coercion in the novel is depicted by an existence of violence. It’s represented by how the Handmaids are punished by using an electric cattle prod once they make mistakes or refuse to fulfill the ruling class’ interests. Another portrayal of repression is depicted during The Salvagings. It’s the occurrence during which those who are guilty are executed by the ruling class’ repressive apparatuses or even by the Handmaids themselves.

Abstract

The theme of local wisdom is an example of an interesting theme in writing activities and could be developed into a work that contributes to the creative industry and teach cultural values and national identity. In language learning, writing is one of the important skills in reconstructing grammar, vocabulary, and supporting the use of spoken language. Currently, writing skills can also be measured using global measurement standards. The standard is the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) which has been used in the European Region. Likewise, the English Literature study program at the State University of Jakarta also teaches writing skills or other skills with CEFR standards. However, in teaching Writing course, lecturers use various references or sources for learning. This means that there are no teaching materials arranged in the form of modules or textbooks as the main reference. Therefore, this research was designed in a research and development scheme to compile teaching materials which contains local wisdom.

Abstract

This study examines the film Pinocchio (2022) by Robert Zemeckis in comparison to the 1940 version of old animation on the basis of mise-en-scène. The analysis was done using the descriptive analysis method with the film approach and the films are analyzed on both the narrative and cinematographic aspect. The result showed that two films show a lot of similarities since they were both made on the same story. The analysis of the narrative aspect showed that they have different opening and conclusion in plot, have extra more characters in the new film, as well as show different social setting of the film. The cinematic examination proved that the new film put more details on the props of cuckoo clocks made by Geppetto and the lighting analysis showed that the 1940 version used constant high-key lighting while the new version used both low-key and high-key lighting. The 2022 version also used various camera angles and movements, while the 1940 version used constant standard camera angles throughout the film. The overall analysis showed that while the old version is made simply for young audiences, the new film targets audiences of not only young children, but also young adults.

Abstract

The issue regarding female gender roles has been circulating for so many years in many cultures. The issue can be seen in many media including a novel where it brings up the matter along the plot in the story. This article aims to see women empowerment in comparison to the female gender roles represented in Crazy Rich Asians novel by Kevin Kwan. To support this research, the theory used is Eagly’s Gender Role theory and Malhotra’s Women empowerment theory. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method to elaborate on the female gender roles and women empowerment. The results showed that this novel portrays that the female gender roles and stereotypes came from the residual culture and the women empowerment happened when the female characters can choose their own life path for their own sake by their own decisions. It shows that despite the culture that bonds the female characters for generations, they can still speak up for themselves and choose what is good for them.
