Abstract

Literary translation is a challenging enterprise because the translator needs to balance between accuracy and conciseness for the sake of beauty. One of the most challenging types of translation unit in literary translation is quotations, especially those which appears in the ST without sufficient information. The challenge lies in the schematic divergence between the ST and TT readers: ST readers can more readily identify the source, meaning, and relevance of the quotation to the narative context, while TT readers cannot. This research was performed to examine the strategies used for translating quotations in a classic novel, as well as the reasons for their application and their impacts on the resulting TT. A number of translation units in the form of quotations and their respective descriptions are proposed as examples. Data consist of ten couples of ST and TT which were taken from Bram Stoker’s Dracula and its Indonesian translation by Ny. Suwarni A. S. Analysis shows that quotations were translated using transference, transference with a footnote, literal equivalent, paraphrase, functional equivalent, and omission, while descriptions were translated using literal equivalent, expansion, synonym, and omission. This research generated several main results. Firstly, translation of quotations is dominated by the ideology of domestication which was employed to reduce the schematic divergence. Secondly, each strategy has its own positive and negative impacts on the TT. For example, omission and paraphrase enhance TT’s coherence and naturalness, but they also eliminate the unit’s characteristic as a quotation and reduce its poetic effect. In conclusion, a translator of quotations in a literry work must take account of various factors, such as schematic gap, poetic effect, exoticism, coherence, and the relative importance of the quotiations. Keywords: literary translation, schematic knowledge, quotation, domestication, foreignization

Abstract

Legal text translation is challenging because of its emphasis on semantic and syntactic faithfulness, while ST structures do not always have correspondent TL equivalents. One of such structures is the English “preposition + which” (PW) construction. This construction can be difficult to translate into Indonesian because the language does not always have ready-to-use connectors to produce a structurally faithful translation, often forcing translators to take the easy way of using ungrammatical and unnatural connectors which becomes the hallmark of the Indonesian legalese style. This research seeks to examine various ways to translate PW constructions in a more grammatical and natural way, which involves some degree of creative modification, as an alternative to the legalese style. This research is prescriptive in nature because it aims to promote the use of more natural and reader friendly style without sacrificing accuracy. Data in the form of English sentences containing various PW constructions were collected from several legal documents and then translated using the “legalese” and “creative” style for comparison purposes. The data contain various PW connectors such as in which, on which, at which, of which, to which, from which, by which, for which, under which, with which, without which, during which, and beyond which. The creative versions were then analyzed and discussed to generate a set of strategies to translate PW constructions, resulting in six major strategies and at least ten minor strategies which can be applied in combination with each other to produce accurate, natural, and grammatical translations. These findings are expected to reveal the complexity of PW construction translation and to help future translators to deal with similar STs.

Abstract

This study analyzed the attitudinal meaning in the novel Magdalena by Mustafa Lutfi al-Manfaluthi, particularly after its translation from Arabic to Indonesian. As an appraisal analysis, the research aimed to identify categories of attitude, including 1) affect, 2) judgement, and 3) appreciation, and explored the translation techniques applied to these elements. This qualitative case study used a descriptive approach to examine shifts in attitudinal meaning through comparisons between the source and target texts. The results indicated that 1) negative affect dominated the characterization of the main character, Magdalena, and 2) modulation was the most frequently used translation technique, allowing for cultural adaptation without losing emotional meaning. In conclusion, the modulation technique played a crucial role in preserving the attitude and emotional intensity aligned with the Indonesian cultural context, ensuring that the literary text’s messages and values were effectively conveyed. This research contributed to translation studies, especially in analyzing attitude and translation technique choices that influenced readers’ perception.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the translation strategies of cultural items in Tobias Wolff’s short story Powder used by a team of student-translators to produce its Indonesian translation. Data consist of pairs of English source texts (ST) and Indonesian target texts (TT) in the form of words, phrases, and expressions with specific cultural content. which were collected and categorized according to Newmark’s cultural words classification Next, the translation strategy of each unit of analysis was identified according Dewi and Wijaya’s translation procedures. Results show that those cultural items can be classified into five categories: popular culture, cultural objects, cultural concepts, individuals, and expressions. The translators used various strategies, such as cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, transference, and contextual conditioning to preserve meaning and facilitate understanding. This study shows that translation of cultural items is a balancing act between preserving the source text’s cultural nuances and the target text’s acceptability in the target culture. Findings are expected to contribute to the areas of literary and cultural item translation.

Abstract

Abstract

Surabaya has been recognized as one of the best culinary cities in ASEAN according to TasteAtlas 2023/2024, particularly for its traditional dishes and authentic dining establishments. However, various English translations of the same traditional dishes appear across restaurant menus, potentially influencing foreign tourists’ perception of Indonesian cuisine. This study investigates the English usage and gastronomic elements embedded in the translation of traditional dish names on restaurant menus. Drawing on a dataset of 315 traditional dishes and their English translations extracted from 35 menus of four- and five-star hotels in Surabaya, this research applies AntConc software to analyze vocabulary frequency, collocation patterns, keyword distribution, and clusters. The linguistic patterns are examined alongside seven gastronomic elements: ingredients, cooking methods, appearance, flavors, the name of the dish’s creator, geographical origin, and transliteration, to evaluate how informative and persuasive functions are fulfilled. The findings show that the vocabulary used in the translations is relatively limited and repetitive, dominated by nouns denoting ingredients and past participle verbs denoting cooking methods. Six gastronomic elements appear frequently, with transliteration being the least utilized and the creator’s name absent. These results indicate that current translations prioritize informative over persuasive functions. The study suggests that menu translations should be standardized and incorporate gastronomic elements that enhance persuasive appeal to support culinary tourism.

Abstract

Discourse concerning sexuality in Indonesia is influenced by religion, social norm, and the Pornography Law that governs the circulation of media with explicit sexual content. However, bookstores in Indonesia sell translated novels with explicit sexual scenes. One of such novels is Terbuka Untukmu (2013), the Indonesian translation of Sylvia Day’s Bared to You (2012). This research aims to analyze how the discourse concerning sexuality itself is limited (Foucault, 1972) and how such limitation(s) (Levefere, 1992) influences the translation of sexual expressions and their synonyms in the novel. This research was conducted by applying the corpus-based descriptive analysis approach using Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation procedures (1995). This research found that there were synonymous expressions with differing degree of vulgarity that were translated into the same expressions. Vulgar and neutral expressions were translated into the same expression, and so were vulgar and positive expressions. However, neutral and positive expressions were not translated into the same expression. It can be concluded that the discourse concerning sexuality in the target readers’ society is limited through the usage of the sexual expressions in order to significantly reduce the vulgarity of the expressions which was present in the source text and to minimize the inclusion of female genitalia so that the translation is more acceptable among the target readers. This study will also help in showing English to Indonesian translators the diversity of translating certain sexual expressions in literary translations.

Abstract

Game subtitle must be translated using proper techniques to avoid misunderstanding when the game is played. In addition, Indonesian and English have different systems of personal pronouns, which must be known and understood by the translator. Indonesian has several parameters of personal pronouns heavily influenced by various aspects of interpersonal relationship between speakers. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Data in the form of sentences containing personal pronouns were taken from Dreadout 2’s English subtitle and its Indonesian translation. This research used two sets of theory: Molina and Albir’s translation technique (2002) and Moeliono, et al.’s parameters of Indonesian personal pronouns (2017). Results show that the translator used three techniques, i.e. established equivalence, particularization, and variation, to translate the English pronouns. Besides that, the selection of Indonesian personal pronouns as equivalents was found to be deeply influenced by the parameters of social status and kinship.

Abstract

The representation of gender in translated literature is critical for negotiating ideological values between cultures. Internationally, this negotiation has been documented mainly in audiovisual, political, and postcolonial translation contexts; its dynamics within Indonesian literary translation, particularly amid the sociocultural shifts of the Reform era, remain unexamined. This study aims to compare the gender-stereotypical content in Julia Quinn’s The Duke and I and its Indonesian translation, and to connect observed shifts to the specific sociocultural anchors of Indonesia’s Reform period. By extending prior audiovisual-translation findings on the Bridgerton franchise to a literary case study, and identifying the specific linguistic mechanisms through which gender ideology can persist even as overt sexism declines, this study offers a novel, corpus-based account of how gender stereotypes are negotiated in literary translation. Employing a mixed-method approach, the study integrates Sara Mills’s (2008) theory of language and sexism with the social practice dimension of Norman Fairclough’s (2001) critical discourse analysis (CDA) and Sketch Engine corpus statistics. The analysis indicates a significant shift from overt to indirect, sanitised gender stereotypes, with overt sexism declining from 17.77% in the source text to 10.38% in the translation. Meanwhile, female-targeted stereotyping increased from 57.82% to 65.14%, showing that hostile language is softened even as underlying patriarchal beliefs persist and become increasingly concentrated on female characters. This linguistic change highlights a complex ideological compromise in Indonesia’s Reform era, where progressive democratic aspirations coexist with the entrenched traditionalism of State Ibuism, thereby repackaging rather than dismantling existing gender hierarchies.
