Abstract

Translation competence is a concept that everyone who would like to become a translator should know and understand. Moreover, novice translators or translation students need to achieve all translation competences if they desire to become professional translators. Thus, they must be taught about these translation competences. This paper is the result of a conceptual study, not an empirical one. It explores the literature on translation competences from Translation Studies scholars and adapts them for Indonesian novice translators to learn and achieve. This paper provides explanation, examples, and recommendations for translation students to accomplish translation competences. From the study, 13 translation competences are acquired and those are considered the most suitable with the recent situation of the translation industry in Indonesia. The number of these competences is a not a fixed one as it may decrease or increase in the future following the trends in the translation world. Keywords: translation competences, professional translators, novice translators, translation students

Abstract

This paper investigates the translation strategies used in translating profanity in the novel The Catcher in the Rye and their effects on the narrator’s characterization. The purpose is to see the effects that certain translation strategies have on characterization, an important literary element. This paper will focus on Chapter 25, the penultimate chapter where the climax takes place. This paper uses statistics to examine the number of translation strategies used and the qualitative-descriptive method to examine the effects on the narrator’s characterization. The strategies will be classified based on Baker’s (2018) proposed strategies, while Nida’s (2012) argument regarding the importance of characterization will be the framework for evaluating the characterization. This paper finds that the Indonesian translator overwhelmingly used the strategies of softening and omission. This results in a significantly different characterization of the narrator, in which he becomes less irreverent and more conscious of social norms.

Abstract

This paper is an overview on the development of Translation Studies (TS) research in Indonesia from 2008 to 2018. The study aims to discover whether the TS research conducted by the students of ten Indonesian universities has followed the present trends of TS research in the world. The data were obtained from the final papers (undergraduate theses, Master’s degree theses, and doctoral theses) of the universities having translation programs in Indonesia, particularly on Java and Bali Islands. The titles of the final papers were analyzed to obtain a general idea of what topics of TS research are usually investigated by Indonesian university students. The results show that most of the topics are categorized into text analysis and translation (product-oriented research), and very few belong to the process-oriented research, participant-oriented research, and other themes. This leads to the conclusion that TS research in Indonesia has not yet developed well and has not varied according to the international TS research progress.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is a descriptive qualitative study that discusses the appraisal of characters found in the Korean anthology, 그녀의 이름은 (Geunyeo-e ireumeun) and its Indonesian translation, Her Name Is. This study focuses on the characters’ judgment in the Korean text (source text or ST), and the Indonesian text (target text or TT). It aims to describe the appraisal of the female lead character towards other characters, other characters towards the female lead character, and the female lead character towards herself. The data that were collected through the linguistic corpus method were then analyzed by comparing judgments found in the ST and TT. It is found that there are 97 pairs of the characters’ judgments. The result of the analysis shows that both in the ST and in the TT, the judgment of the female lead character towards her partner and society is dominantly negative (71.43%). Moreover, most of the judgment of the partner and society towards the female lead character is also negative (66.67%). Although the judgment of other female characters towards the female lead character tends to be negative (75%), there is no significant percentage gap between the positive judgments (53.33%) and negative judgments (46.67%) of the female lead character towards other female characters. Furthermore, it is found that the judgment of the lead female character towards herself is neutral. This study also discovered that the female lead character of each story is the main focalizer both in the ST and in the TT. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini membahas appraisal yang berfokus pada tokoh-tokoh dalam antologi cerpen Korea 그녀의 이름은 (Geunyeo-e ireumeun) dan terjemahan Indonesia, Her Name Is. Keywords: appraisal, attitude, cerpen Korea

Abstract

News has been spread internationally since it was digitalized. This situation makes machine translation used as a tool to solve the language barrier problem, as it is cheap and fast compared to human translators. However, the translation by Machine Translation is not always correct. In fact, it results in more problems than in successful translation; in other words, the use of this machine is like ‘garbage in, garbage out’. However, not many studies have been conducted to provide evidence of the weaknesses of machine translation. This research paper attempts to discover the translation methods and procedures of the “translate to Indonesian” featured by Google Translate in the translation of CNN International current news from English to Indonesian. The data consist of 10 pieces of entertainment news that are published online on CNN International News. A descriptive-qualitative approach is used to analyze the data. The scope of the analysis is lexical words only. The translated news was observed and compared to the original news in order to identify the methods and procedures applied in the translation results by the Machine Translation. The results of this analysis reveal that the “translate to Indonesian” feature from Google Translate commonly uses the literal and faithful translation methods and the procedure mostly found is borrowing. Consequently, the translation by this machine is still awkward and requires substantial improvement.

Abstract

This paper tries to explore the differences and convergences between language acquisition and translator training. The differences will be observed from the competences acquired in both classes, the methodology, and the history of the approaches used by both. The convergences will be seen from the shift of focus in teaching, the use of context, the teaching of reading and writing, the use of dictionaries, and the use of Task-Based Approaches. These differences and convergences are expected to give better ideas on how to teach both language and translation. Keywords: Acquisition, Translator, Training

Abstract

This research paper focuses on news translation from English to Indonesian and attempts to discover the translation methods, procedures, and strategies applied in this type of translation. The material used was obtained from a US news website as the source text and from an Indonesian newspaper as the target text. The analysis started from small differences to big and obvious differences. The faithful translation was made by me to show how the translator of the target text applies translation methods, procedures, and strategies. The results of this analysis reveal that free translation has been applied in this news translation. Keywords: news translation, from English to Indonesian, translation methods, procedures, and strategies, free translation

Abstract

Translation Studies is a relatively new discipline in the world, and in Indonesia it is not much heard of, let alone studied by. Moreover, none of the universities in this country has Translation Studies as one of its study programs or departments. Translation is still considered part of a linguistics department or literature department. Thus, this paper will explain this ‘new’ discipline, what it covers, and the trends it has in the present and future times. It is expected that this paper will be an eye-opener for many academicians in Indonesia to be aware of Translation Studies as an independent discipline which draws from many disciplines and to encourage people to learn more about this discipline.

Abstract

Research on translation assessment on English to Indonesian translation results using two dissimilar rubrics and a quantitative approach is rarely conducted by Indonesian scholars. This present study investigated the effectiveness between two assessment models, which are very different, one using a holistic approach (the LBI Bandscale) and the other using the error analysis approach (the ATA Framework). The research has been conducted on several language pairs, including the Indonesian-English translation, but it has never been done on the English-Indonesian translation. The research aims to discover whether there is a substantial improvement using both assessment models and whether one model is more effective than the other. The study was conducted in the Introduction to Translation (DDPU) classes of the English Studies Program of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB), Universitas Indonesia (UI) for undergraduate students of Semester 6. The respondents were asked to do translation in class, and then within three weeks, their works were returned with feedback based on both models. After that, they were asked to do revisions of their translation results. The outcome of the analysis shows that there is a great improvement in the translation results because of the two assessment models, but there is no significant difference in the effectiveness between those models.
