Abstract

Backgrounds: Melasma is commonly observed in community among women of reproductive age. Incidence of melasma at least nine times higher in women than men, especially in pregnant women. The relationship between sunscreen application and melasma in women of reproductive age has not been widely studied and the correlation is not clear. This study aims to determine the relationship between sunscreen use and severity of melasma in women of reproductive age. Methods: An analytical observational cross-sectional study was conducted among 31 women of productive age. Results: The results showed that 14 respondents had good sunscreen usage habit (45.2%), whereas 17 respondents had sun protector irregularly (54.8%). A total 27 respondents (74.2%) had mild melasma, whereas 3 respondents had moderate melasma (22.6%) and 1 respondent had severe melasma (3.2%). The Chi-Square test shows that the significance value (p) = 0.000 (p <0.05) so that there is a significant relationship. Conclusions: Meaning that there is a relationship between the use of sunscreen and severity of melasma in women of reproductive age.

Abstract

Pandemi Covid-19 menyebabkan munculnya beberapa kebiasaan baru, diantaranya kebiasaan cuci tangan. Peningkatan frekuensi cuci tangan menyebabkan peningkatan kejadian dermatitis tangan. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui pengaruh frekuensi cuci tangan dan jenis antiseptik terhadap kejadian dermatitis tangan pada mahasiswa. Jenis penelitian adalah analitik observasional. Data didapatkan melalui kuesioner online. Responden dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 7 Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Hang Tuah tahun 2022, yang bersedia dan tidak memiliki riwayat penyakit asma, hay fever, serta dermatitis atopik pada masa kanak-kanak. Data diolah dengan uji statistik Chi-Square. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 51,5% responden memiliki frekuensi cuci tangan lebih dari lima kali sehari dan 86,4% responden melakukan cuci tangan dengan air dan sabun. Uji Chi-Square menunjukkan nilai p = 0,964 dan  p = 0,727 yang berarti tidak terdapat pengaruh frekuensi cuci tangan maupun jenis antiseptik terhadap kejadian dermatitis tangan pada mahasiswa.

Abstract

Candida albicans merupakan jamur oportunistik yang banyak ditemukan di negara tropis seperti Indonesia dan dapat menyebabkan sariawan, lesi kulit, vulvavaginitis, kandidiuria, serta kandidiasis pada individu dengan gangguan sistem imun. Obat antijamur Candida albicans yang digunakan selama ini memiliki efek samping serta resistensi. Alternatif yang mungkin dapat digunakan adalah daun Rhizophora mucronata yang mengandung alkaloid, flavonoid, steroid, triterpenoid, tanin, dan saponin yang berperan sebagai antijamur. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental dengan menggunakan metode difusi cakram.  Sampel penelitian ini terdiri dari 24 sampel yang terbagi dalam 6 kelompok, yakni kelompok kontrol positif dengan nistatin, kontrol negatif dengan akuades, kelompok ekstrak 25%, 50%, 75%, dan 100%. Candida albicans diinokulasi pada sabouraud dextrose agar. Kemudian agar tersebut diberi ekstrak etanol daun Rhizophora mucronata dan diukur daya hambatnya dengan jangka sorong. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak 50%, 75%, dan 100% dengan konsentrasi 100% memiliki daya hambat paling tinggi, yakni sebesar 9,2225 mm. Pada konsentrasi ekstrak 25% tidak menunjukkan adanya daya hambat. Dengan demikian, ekstrak etanol daun Rhizophora mucronata dapat menghambat pertumbuhan Candida albicans mulai pada konsentrasi 50%. Ekstrak Rhizophora mucronata konsentrasi 100% membentuk zona hambat tertinggi pada pertumbuhan Candida albicans.

Abstract

Sebagian besar infeksi kulit di Indonesia disebabkan oleh bakteri Staphylococcus aureus yang bersifat patogen oportunistik dan bertanggung jawab atas permasalahan resistensi antibiotik Metisilin dan Vankomisin terhadap S.aureus. Daun bakau R. mucronata mengandung aktivitas antibakteri pada senyawa metabolit sekunder yakni fenol, flavonoid, saponin, tanin, dan terpenoid. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh ekstrak etanol 96% daun bakau R. mucronata terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Staphylococcus aureus. Penelitian dilakukan secara eksperimental laboratoris dengan sampel biakan murni Staphylococcus aureus murni, diambil dengan teknik random sampling, dicampur dengan aquades dan kekeruhannya setara dengan standarisasi 0,5 Mc Farland, ditanam di agar Mueller Hinton. Daun Bakau R. mucronata diekstraksi dengan metode maserasi dan dibuat 4 seri konsentrasi (25%, 50%, 75%, dan 100%). Uji antibakteri menggunakan metode difusi cakram dengan kontrol positif Siprofloksasin 5 mcg dan kontrol negatif akuades steril. Semua cawan petri dimasukkan kedalam inkubator selama 24 jam pada suhu 37°C, lalu diukur diameternya. Data dianalisis secara statistik dengan uji Nonparametrik Kruskal Wallis dan dilanjutkan uji posthoc Mann Whitney-U. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan diameter zona hambat setiap konsentrasi ekstrak dengan aktivitas penghambatan tertinggi pada konsentrasi 100% sebesar 11,7 mm. Simpulan dalam penelitisn ini bahwa ekstrak etanol 96% daun bakau R. mucronata dapat menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri S.aureus secara in vitro

Abstract

Shigella dysenteriae is the most common cause of diarrhea in cases of shigellosis. This bacterium can invade the epithelium of the large intestine, ileum, and rectum, causing diarrhea accompanied by blood and mucus. Effective antibiotic therapy for this disease has shown resistance. The mangrove Rhizophora mucronata contains various secondary metabolites that have the potential to be new antibacterial alternatives. This study is an in vitro laboratory study to determine the inhibitory effect of Rhizophora mucronata leaf extract on the growth of Shigella dysenteriae bacteria. The study used the Kirby-Bauer drop diffusion method with Mueller-Hinton Agar medium and a digital caliper to measure the diameter of the inhibition zone. Twenty-four samples were divided into six groups: negative control (bacterial culture treated with distilled water); treatment groups (Kp) (treated with extract concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%); and positive control (treated with ciprofloxacin 5 mcg). Results: The negative control group and all treatment groups had an average inhibition zone of 6.00 mm or no inhibition zone, while the positive control group had an average of 25.845 mm. The Kruskal-Wallis test (p=0.0001) showed significant differences among the tested groups, and the post hoc test (p=0.014) indicated significant differences between the positive control group and all other groups. The leaf extract of Rhizophora mucronata was not found to have inhibitory activity against the growth of Shigella dysenteriae.-

Abstract

Introduction: Refractive error is one of the most prevalent visual impairments worldwide. During the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, prolonged school closures and social restrictions, forcing adolescents to a sharp increase in digital screen use, created ideal conditions for the progression of refractive errors. Purpose: To evaluate and compare the prevalence of refractive errors among adolescents aged 17–20 years before the pandemic, in contrast to during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed the medical records of 77 adolescents aged 17–20 years who underwent visual acuity examinations at RSPAL dr. Ramelan, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, between 2019 and 2025 under purposive sampling. Screen time data were collected through structured questionnaires and categorized by daily duration. Visual acuity was recorded as the average of both eyes in decimal form. Statistical analyses were performed to compare visual acuity before, during, and after the pandemic. Results: A Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a significant decrease in visual acuity between the pre-pandemic and during or post-pandemic periods (Z = –7.117, p < 0.001). Among the 77 adolescents analyzed, 87.0% (n = 67) experienced a decline in visual acuity, while 13.0% (n = 10) showed no change. The majority reported daily screen time of 2–4 hours (42.9%) or more than four hours (39.0%). Conclusions: Significant reductions in visual acuity were observed during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a mean decline from 0.52 to 0.39. These findings highlight the potential long-term impact of pandemic-related lifestyle changes on adolescent vision and support the need for preventive strategies to protect visual health in the digital era.
