Abstract

Background: Administration of high-dose paracetamol had been indicated to induce several molecular and biochemical cascades of hepatotoxicity. The abundant amount of ROS formation following the uptake of the medication exceeds the physiologic antioxidant capacity of the body, leading to the occurrence of oxidative stress. Wild strawberries (Fragaria vesca L)extractsare thought to have hepatoprotective activities regarding the high activity of antioxidants contained.Method: Aspartate Transaminase (AST) activity was used as a marker of hepatotoxicity. In the 10 days trial, randomized samples of 24 male Wistar rats (Rattus Norvegicus) were used and divided into three groups: 1 group without treatment, 1 group receiving oral paracetamol 1750 mg/kg in CMC-Na suspension, and 1 group receiving oral paracetamol 1750 mg/kg following administration of strawberry extract 400 mg/kg. The strawberry extract was administered from day 1 to 10, while high-dose paracetamol was administered on day 9. AST activity analysis was done on day 10 of the trial. Significant results were found showing an increased AST activity in the paracetamol-only group (p=0.001) and a decreased AST activity in the group receiving strawberry extract (p=0.001). Conclusion: Fragaria vesca L extracts were proven in vivo to have hepatoprotective activities against paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver (NAFLD) disorders. Inflammatory conditions, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance,as well as several risk factors for cardiovascular disease, are also risk factors for this disease. This study aimsto determine the effect of noni (Morinda citrifolia) extract on the improvement of dyslipidemia condition, based on the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) level. This research is alaboratory experimental study with a post-test only control group design. Male Wistar rat (Rattus norvegicus)were divided into four groups: negative control group with no induction and treatment (K-), positive controlgroup given high-fat diet induction for 14 days (K+), noni extract treatment group given a high-fat diet anda noni extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg BB per day for 7 days (P1), and noni extract at a dose of 200 mg/kgBB per day for seven days (P2). Low Density Lipoprotein and High Density Lipoprotein serum levels weremeasured using the ELISA method. The results showed that there was a significant increase in LDL and adecrease in HDL in both treatment groups (P1 and P2) compared with K(+) group. Therefore, we concludethat noni extract (Morinda citrifolia) played a role as an antioxidant which can increase LDL and decreaseHDL serum levels in rats induced by a high fat diet.

Abstract

Breast cancer was one of the most common types of cancer in women and the major cause of death. Chemotherapy in breast cancer caused toxicity to the normal cells, resistance to the drugs, and several other side effects. Seaweed had many functional compounds that could be used as adjuvant therapy in breast cancer because of its anti-cancer properties called the proapoptotic agent. These compounds were fucoidan, phloroglucinol, and fucoxanthin. Their proapoptotic mechanisms shown by the journal were through increasing proapoptotic protein expression, decreasing antiapoptotic protein expression, inducing oxidative stress production on the cancer cell, and inhibiting the PI3K pathway. This review concludes that the brown seaweed (Sargassum sp.), which contains fucoidan, phloroglucinol, and fucoxanthin, could increase breast cancer cells’ apoptotic process.

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is an abnormal lipid metabolism which may cause fat degeneration on hepatocytes cells and elevated triglyceride serum level. Dyslipidemia can be prevented by the consumption of high antioxidant food. Noni(Morinda citrifolia) contains many antioxidant such as flavanoid, kuersetin, tannin, and saponin, which are able to prohibit the elevation of ROS.This research is aimed to find out the effect of noni(Morinda citrifolia) extract in reducing the number of hepatocyte’s cells with fat degeneration and decreasing the triglyceride level which is elevated due to high cholesterol diet induction. In this study white rats divided randomly into 4 groups, control group (K-), high cholesterol diet induced group (K+), high cholesterol diet induced with 100 mg/Kg BW noni extract group (P1), high cholesterol diet induced with 200 mg/Kg BW noni extract group (P2). The result shows that noni  extract with dose 100 mg/Kg BW and  200 mg/Kg BWcan reduce the number of hepatocytes cells with fat degeneration (p= 0,026 and p=0,027) and decrease the level of triglyceride serum (p=0,036 and p=0,010).The conclusion is noni extract with dose 100 mg/KgBW reduces effectively  the number of hepatocyte’s cells with fat degeneration and decreases the level of triglyceride serum which increase because of high cholesterol diet.
