Abstract

Gaslighting is a form of emotional manipulation that significantly affects a victim’s mental health, leading to confusion, anxiety, depression, and emotional instability. This study analyzes the psychological and behavioral impacts of gaslighting in romantic relationships using Austin’s speech act theory, which includes locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. The analysis focuses on the interaction between the characters Mark and Alicia in the film Your Reality. Data were collected through qualitative analysis of selected dialogues. The findings show that expressive illocutionary acts are the most dominant (37.50%), followed by directives (29.17%), representatives (20.83%), and commissive (12.50%). Psychologically, the most prevalent impact is anxiety (61.11%), reflected in feelings of guilt (22.22%), confusion (16.67%), self-doubt (11.11%), and low self-esteem (11.11%). Depression also appears (5.56%) through feelings of distress. Behaviorally, gaslighting leads to increased obedience and submission (33.34%), seen in over-apologizing (5.56%), prioritizing the gaslighter needs (11.11%), and loss of personal autonomy, such as difficulty making decisions (11.11%). These findings reveal how gaslighting shapes emotional dependency and restricts victims’ ability to act independently. The study highlights the importance of recognizing gaslighting tactics in order to restore autonomy, improve mental health, and break cycles of manipulation in romantic relationships.

Abstract

Love bombing is a dangerous phenomenon in relationships, where a narcissistic perpetrator uses language to manipulate their victim. This study aims to uncover the hidden meanings behind Jake’s love bombing language, revealing the manipulative intent behind his words. A qualitative descriptive approach is employed to analyze the language of love bombing within a narcissistic relationship. The data consists of 50 utterances from the short movie Love Bomb, spoken by Jake, the narcissistic character, towards Skye as his victim. Data were collected through observation, selecting utterances with significant manipulative intent from the official YouTube channel @integratebristol. In the analysis, Jake’s utterances are categorized into two stages of narcissistic abuse based on Grossi: idealization (18 utterances) and devaluation (32 utterances). In the idealization stage, he uses flattering language to create an illusion of love and emotional connection with Skye. As the relationship shifts to devaluation, his language becomes manipulative, controlling, and aggressive, aimed at diminishing Skye’s self-esteem and asserting dominance. Using Searle’s taxonomy of illocutionary acts, Jake’s utterances are classified into assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. The findings show that during the idealization stage, Jake’s utterances consist of assertives (38.89%), directives (16.67%), commissives (0%), expressives (44.44%), and declarations (0%). In the devaluation stage, the distribution shifts to assertives (31.25%), directives (43.75%), commissives (18.75%), expressives (6.25%), and declarations (0%). Further analysis using Austin’s speech act theory reveals that Jake’s locutionary acts often differ from his literal meaning, while his perlocutionary effects shape Skye’s emotions and decisions. The study concludes that love bombing conceals strategic manipulation through exaggerated praise, conditional affection, and guilt-inducing phrases. This demonstrates how manipulative language in love bombing enables the perpetrator to maintain power and control in relationships

Abstract

Enhancing student engagement is essential for improving learning outcomes in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing classes. This study investigates the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly ChatGPT, to foster engagement through personalized feedback, creative expression, and interactive learning. Conducted at an Islamic university in Indonesia with 80 participants, the research employed a quasi-experimental design to assess ChatGPT’s impact on behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement. Participants were divided into control and experimental groups, with the latter utilizing ChatGPT for brainstorming and instructional support. The results showed significantly higher engagement levels among the experimental group across all dimensions, highlighting ChatGPT’s role in creating student-centered environments that enhance traditional teaching methods. By offering real-time, tailored assistance, ChatGPT boosts motivation and deepens cognitive and emotional connections to learning tasks. This study contributes to the growing literature on AI in education by demonstrating ChatGPT’s effectiveness in EFL writing instruction and emphasizing the need for innovative, AI-integrated pedagogical approaches to enrich learning experiences. Future research should explore the broader applications of AI in language education, addressing scalability, diverse learner needs, and long-term impacts on academic performance.
