Abstract

The evolution of pictures has brought changes to communication in the current time. From smoke signal to smartphones as a medium of communication, has enabled people to keep in touch with one another easier. The development of technology produces internet which is essential to every humankind around the world. With the help of internet, people could now upload pictures, especially Selfies, and post them on social media for others to view and respond to them. Through this medium of sharing over the social media, Selfies are used to deliver messages to facilitate communication better by saying their mind out on what they see and think. Hence, this study was carried out to examine the effects of Selfie as prompt to generate ideas for narrative writing among undergraduates in a local higher education in Malaysia. The findings had shown significant improvement in undergraduates’ writing in term of ideas coherency and text length. It was observed that undergraduates were able to narrate their experiences and stories related to their own Selfies as compared to non-pictorial writing. As a whole, the use of Selfie as prompt had improved undergraduates’ writing ability as well as their level of confidence in language expression.

Abstract

Teachers are accustomed to traditional teaching, in which chalk-and-talk becomes the prominent approach in language teaching. Hence, planning a creative learning environment can be demanding as it comes with challenging tasks. However, the traditional way of teaching and learning can be inadequate for learners to retrieve knowledge in the 21st century classroom, as they prefer game-like activities rather than pen-and-paper lessons. Therefore, learners’ experience of using gamification in the classroom is significant as it sparks curiosity and immediate enthusiasm, which reflect the learners’ willingness to learn. Importantly, gamification prepares learners to be active and take responsibility for their learning. Fun games instilled during the lessons are believed to be more effective in producing positive outcomes due to learners feeling motivated to play more. However, learners would not realize that they are learning. This was followed by a selection of 108 respondents using gamification and a series of class activities in language learning at a local primary school in Kuala Selangor district, Selangor. The study was conducted using a quantitative survey method which involved administering questionnaires to the Language Camp participants at their respective schools. Data was collected, analyzed accordingly, and presented in the form of tables. The results showed that the integration of gamification in language learning aids learners to improve their creative, critical, and problem-solving skills. Likewise, interesting and engaging activities subconsciously spark the learners’ interest in language learning.

Abstract

In the era of digitalisation, working parents today rely more than ever on electronic gadgets as digital babysitters and device-led playtime to entertain their children. The study suggests that parents and their interactions with the home environment may contribute to shaping children’s screen time. However, many struggle to keep up with the immense variety of mobile applications easily downloaded online. Thus, long screen time exposure inhibits children’s ability to engage actively in physical activities as well as affects children’s well-being development. This scoping review aims to identify parental perceptions of children’s exposure to screens for a long period of time and how screen time affects children’s well-being. Five databases, including Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE), Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), and ScienceDirect, were used in this research. In the initial identification stage, 218 articles were identified from the mentioned databases above. However, there were only 81 articles found to be assessed for eligibility. A total of 34 articles are eligible for analysis and reference after the exclusion and inclusion process for data collection. The findings show that the increased exposure to screens raised concerns about potential negative effects on children’s emotions and behaviour.

Abstract

The pandemic of Covid-19 has changed how education works in the current time. A childs learning development has always been placed on the responsibility of the school. However, during the pandemic, parental involvement has become vital in the world of education. The involvement of just a few parents may influence the quality of instruction in a classroom or at home and, thereby, influence the academic development of many children in Malaysia. This research aims to determine parental involvement childs education in Selangor, Malaysia. Besides, it was also to help teachers and administrators to provide activities that encourage parents to participate in their childs school activities at home. The data was collected via questionnaires and phone interviews. The participants involved were 10 parents and 5 teachers from a local primary school at the selected area during Movement Control Order (MCO). Based on the finding of this research, parental involvement has had a big influence in their childs academic achievement. Although the importance of parental involvement is widely acknowledged in the educational society, most of parents showed that many parents still do not get involve effectively in their childs education whether in school or at home. In conclusion, parental involvement is very essential in primary education and this will help to enhance childs social relationships and promote a sense of self-esteem and self-efficacy

Abstract

This bibliometric analysis, based on data from the Web of Science (WoS) database, examines the increasing role of mobile gaming in education. Mobile gaming has demonstrated strong potential to improve student engagement, motivation, and cognitive skills, yet research on its integration within formal educational settings is still emerging. By analyzing data from 247 scholarly articles published between 2014 and 2023, this study identifies key trends, influential contributors, and areas of growing interest within this field. The findings reveal a significant rise in publications and citations, underscoring the expanding recognition of mobile gaming’s educational value. Prominent themes in the literature include gamification strategies that encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking, focusing on multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs) and other interactive gaming environments that facilitate active learning. The analysis also highlights leading countries, with the United States at the forefront of research output, alongside significant institutional contributions globally. These insights guide educators and policymakers on leveraging mobile gaming in educational practices while addressing potential challenges. By emphasizing the alignment of mobile gaming with sustainable development goal 4 (quality education), this study establishes a foundation for future research into innovative, technology-enhanced learning solutions that are accessible, engaging, and effective.

Abstract

Mobile gaming in education encompasses using games on mobile devices to achieve educational goals, offering an interactive platform that can make learning more engaging and accessible. This study addresses the gap in understanding how mobile gaming can enhance educational outcomes by mapping the intellectual landscape of mobile gaming research in education through bibliometric methods. The problem is the growing need to adapt educational tools to students’ digital preferences, balancing engagement with academic rigor. A total of 247 articles were identified from the Web of Science (WoS) database. Through co-citation and co-occurrence analyses, the study identifies influential research themes and emerging trends, such as gamification, serious games, and augmented reality. The findings demonstrate that mobile gaming fosters engagement in promoting motivation and supporting problem-solving skills in educational contexts. However, it also highlights the importance of aligning mobile gaming with curriculum objectives and ensuring instructor readiness, supporting sustainable development goal 4: quality education, which aims to improve inclusive and equitable learning outcomes. It identifies emerging trends, including serious games, technology acceptance models, and the use of augmented reality in educational settings. This study provides a significant impact for educators and researchers seeking to incorporate mobile gaming into educational settings actively. The study suggests a balanced approach to mobile gaming, ensuring its introduction enhances educational goals while minimizing the potential for distraction, fostering innovation in line with sustainable development goal 9: industry, innovation, and infrastructure.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology in recent years has brought about profound changes in every aspect of our lives. Such technological advancement has impacted children in a digital age where technology permeates every facet of their existence, from education to entertainment and communication to socialization. The younger generations today appear deficient in motor, emotional, and social abilities. They appear to exhibit higher levels of aggression, anxiety, dependency, and reduced creativity. Integrating non-formal education into children’s learning aims to maximize enjoyment and engagement by capturing children’s interest and inspiring them to continue learning. Thus, non-formal education encompasses a spectrum of curricular activities in the natural environment outside of the school area. This scoping review aims to identify the focus skills development among primary school learners and how non-formal educational activities could boost learners’ learning ability. Four databases, including Scopus, web of science (WoS), Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), and ScienceDirect, were used in this research, which found 36 articles for eligibility. Only 15 articles are eligible for analysis and reference after the exclusion and inclusion process for data collection. The findings show that non-formal education offers learners the opportunity to explore a multitude of interests beyond the structured confines of the classroom.

Abstract

Learning loss pertains to the decline or regression in knowledge and abilities, as well as setbacks in academic advancement. This phenomenon typically arises from prolonged interruptions or gaps in the pupil’s educational journey. Learning loss can be observed in diverse manifestations due to many factors. One example that can be illustrated is the disruption of formal education due to the COVID-19 pandemic that struck the world in 2019. As a result, this phenomenon has impacted students’ academics, whether at the school level or higher education institutions, especially primary school students, thus causing learning poverty. This scoping review aims to identify the degree of reading literacy among primary school students and to investigate the factors that contribute to the learning losses of primary school students from the reading aspect. Four databases, including Scopus, education resources information center (ERIC), bielefeld academic search engine (BASE) and directory of open access journals (DOAJ), were used in this research, which found 40 articles for eligibility. Only 20 articles are eligible for analysis and reference after the exclusion and inclusion process for data collection. The findings show that learning losses have impacted the education sector, leading to poverty, especially among primary school children.

Abstract

Corresponding to the current pandemic issue, Covid-19 has driven unprecedented economic loss and instability to many, particularly among low-income families, especially in Asia. In context, families involved single mothers who are markedly affected by job loss; thus, low-income households had markedly affected the well-being and development of children. In addition to family environment, sociodemographic variables, such as socioeconomic status, educational level of parents, and parental conflict, had also been associated with problematic or competent behaviors during childhood. This scoping review aimed to determine current knowledge regarding the impact of single motherhood on the emotional well-being of a child. This review was reported in accordance with the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Three databases, namely Scopus, Web of Science, and Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), were used for data scoping. A total of 341 studies were identified, but only 15 studies conducted in the Asian continent were eligible for selection. Results showed five significant findings concerning parent–child dysfunctional interaction, time spent, family socioeconomic status, parenting skills, and parental styles that impacted the emotional well-being of children, causing child development delay and delinquency.
