Abstract

Work ethics and foreign language skills are essential for the professional, especially in a multinational corporate environment, where people who work have different cultures, languages, and nationalities. That is confirmed by observations at PT Toray International Matsuoka Winner Industries Semarang (PT TIMW). With daily interactions with Japanese clients and college, an understanding of the work ethics of Japanese corporations and proficiency in Japanese is necessary. The participants first studied Japanese corporate work ethics to improve PT TIMW staff's professional skills. Furthermore, ethical knowledge is covered by studying Japanese, which correlates to the office and business activities carried out by PT TIMW. The Japanese class training was attended by related department staff with the highest intensity of interacting with Japanese colleges and clients. Pair conversation activities were carried out to support the simulation of work situations related to production quantities and activities that indicate time. The tricky part was when the participants communicated by using numbers because there were differences in how to count between Indonesian and Japanese. The training showed good results where the participants could answer the mini-tests in each session. Pictures in textbook show an excellent impact in helping participants to imagine concepts and assist conversational activities in Japanese.

Abstract

Reading ability, known as Dokkai in Japanese, is one of the problematic parts of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. The problem in this study focuses on the low performance of students in understanding Japanese reading (Dokkai). This study examines cognitive anxiety and its correlation with the results of the Dokkai test of Japanese language learners. The Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale (CTAS) was used to survey learners' cognitive anxiety level, and the final semester exams of two courses related to Dokkai were used to obtain Dokkai test scores. CTAS responses and scores from the exam results were then analyzed using SPSS. This study used a quantitative research design to determine the relationship between variables. The population of this study was first-year students (second semester) registered in the Japanese Language Education Study Program, totaling 90 people. A random study used a Random sampling technique, considering the population's homogeneous nature. The respondents of this study were 58 first-year Japanese language students, consisting of 25 males and 33 females. The results of the study showed that students experienced a moderate level of cognitive anxiety when facing the Dokkai test, which was manifested physically and affected the cognitive process. The results of the analysis showed that there was a low negative correlation between CTAS and the results of the two Dokkai tests. The implications of this study have a significant effect on the ability to understand texts, so teachers and educators need to design a teaching approach that not only focuses on linguistic aspects but also pays attention to the psychological conditions of students.

Abstract

The goal of this community service is to optimize the use of digital technology for learning at SMA Negeri 1 Ungaran through project-based differentiated learning. 36 students who are active in school organizations and two teachers who guide student organizations will participate in this service. Through training on the CapCut video editing application, students will develop digital skills and learn to use devices productively for creating video content. CapCut enables students to express their creativity by producing educational content, combining conventional and digital media for differentiated learning. Training results showed a significant increase in students' understanding of positive device usage, with an average post-test score of 78, higher than the pre-test score of 67. Students were enthusiastic during the workshop sessions where they created and edited videos and applied their newfound skills to make useful learning videos. Students also demonstrated the ability to create narratives and communicate through scripts, as well as the ability to search for information on the internet, thus enriching their knowledge on topics of interest. This training benefits both students and teachers by introducing the CapCut application as a tool that can be used in formal learning and extracurricular activities. Thus, the activity successfully contributed to improving students' digital competence and reducing their use of devices for unproductive purposes.

Abstract

In communicating ideas in a complex discourse, non-literal expressions are often used to convey a message. This qualitative descriptive study used conceptual metaphor theory and metaphorical pattern analysis to analyze and investigate linguistic discourses and find the conceptual metaphor in the two most prominent Japanese media, Yomiuri Shinbun and Asahi Shinbun. Then, analyze how metaphorical expression emerges and what conceptual domain of the source domain is underlying the expression of the source target. This research shows that WAR is the most frequent conceptual metaphor in COVID-19 discourse and the HUMAN and NATURE conceptual domain. While the WAR conceptual domain helps to convey the urgency of how to treat the virus and illness, the HUMAN and NATURE conceptual domain helps to convey the situation and condition of the pandemic. This study found that both newspapers' data emphasize the community, citizens, and national interests, indicating that to understand how Japanese people communicate is to understand that Japanese people are a collective society, and that society and cultural background are embodied in the conceptual domain of human thinking and then appear as a linguistic expression.
