Abstract

Abstract

The phenomenon of artists entering the world of politics or becoming a legislative candidate has been happening for a long time. Since the election during the New Order era, several artists have sat in Senayan representing the group's envoy faction, which consists of artists and religious figures. In this reform era, a number of celebrities have even become candidates for legislative members registered by political parties. Political parties nominate artists for reasons of urgent pragmatism. Artists have requirements to be quickly accepted by voters. Artists have social and financial capital so that winning works will be easier for artists to do than cadres who may need to work extra hard. So, artists were chosen because of their strategic position to collect votes for parties in the midst of tight competition in the 2019 election. In fact, candidates from among artists cannot always guarantee that they will be an effective means to boost vote acquisition. The popularity of artists is a major factor in political parties recruiting artists to become members of the legislature. This study shows that political parties do not carry out the functions of political parties properly. Abstract

In Musi Banyuasin Regency, the quest for gender equality in political representation faces multifaceted challenges. This study explores the barriers hindering female participation and representation in local electoral processes. Through qualitative analysis, interviews with key stakeholders including female candidates, local officials, and community leaders were conducted to uncover underlying issues. The findings reveal several critical challenges. Firstly, structural barriers such as entrenched patriarchal norms and limited access to financial resources significantly impede women from contesting elections on an equal footing with their male counterparts. Secondly, despite legal frameworks promoting gender equality, cultural perceptions and societal expectations often undermine women’s political ambitions. Thirdly, the role of political parties emerges as pivotal, with varying levels of support and nomination opportunities affecting women’s candidacy viability. Moreover, the study highlights community attitudes towards female leadership, where biases and stereotypes persist, shaping voter preferences and electoral outcomes. These dynamics perpetuate a cycle of underrepresentation and marginalization of women in decision-making bodies like the local legislative council. Ultimately, achieving gender equality at the polls in Musi Banyuasin Regency necessitates concerted efforts from various stakeholders to dismantle barriers, reshape cultural narratives, and advance inclusive governance practices

Abstract

This paper investigates two sides effects of COVID-19 pandemic on democracy in Indonesia. Majority articles on democracy and pandemic argue that COVID-19 pandemic has declined democracy in many countries, including Indonesia. This article, on the one hand agrees with the dominant argument, but on the other hand argues that the COVID-19 pandemic also contributed to maintain democracy. This paper bases democracy on Beetham's notion whose defined democracy as popular control over public affairs with the principles of equality and participation. In order to examine relationship between democracy and pandemic, we use three issues as case studies: the Minerba Bill, the Omnibus Law and data transparency issues. This paper uses qualitative methods and data obtained by literature study regarding civil society’s participation and control in public affairs during the last a year. Two main findings of this paper show that the pandemic has accelerated democratic decline trough two directions, they are from above and from below. Decline from above due to restrictions of freedom of speech and civil participation in public affairs. At the same time, decline from below occurred due to people cleavage in public health issues. In addition, disinformation spread by buzzer which redistributed by other people has been made this situation worse. Otherwise, pandemic also maintained democracy through strengthening civil society's networks and participation marked by strengthening digital activism network toward country’s policy and data transparency. It may be concluded that civil society play a crucial role in maintaining global democracy, especially during the pandemic.

Abstract

The discourse women's representation in politics has gained traction globally, including in Indonesia. While the progress made by women in the political arena deserves recognition, especially in a society where gender Stereotypes and patriarchal norms remain deeply rooted, it is crucial to acknowledge that many women still struggle to contest elections independently without relying on factors such as political dynasties, financial resources, incumbency, or family connections. This article delves into the significant role of family ties in shaping the electability of women in politics, with a specific focus on Zainab’s successful bid in the 2019 legislative election for Electora District V, Ogan Ilir Regency. Using a qualitative-descriptive research method and a library research approach, this article explores how Zainab's victory is closely linked to the influence of her family's prominent status, which is known as a respected and generous family with extensive networks among community leaders in various villages. We foud that Zainab’s family played a crucial role in crafting a positive public image, boosting her popularity, and ultimately securing her electability, despite her status as a newcomer in the political landscape of Ogan Ilir. The findings underscore the importance of family legacy as a powerful political asset, highlighting how the strength of a family name can be a decisive factor in political success, as evidenced by Zainab’s victory in the 2019 election in Ogan Ilir Regency.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of Joint Decree (SKB) 3 Ministers 2022 on the neutrality of State Civil Apparatus (ASN) during social events, specifically weddings, amidst the political climate of the 2024 Indonesian elections. The findings reveal that SKB 3 Menteri has heightened awareness among ASN regarding the importance of maintaining a non-partisan stance, even in personal celebrations. The study identifies subtle behavioural shifts, such as avoidance of hand gestures or poses that could be perceived as political endorsements, demonstrating compliance with the directive. However, this heightened caution also created a palpable sense of restraint among wedding participants, leading to a more formal and less expressive atmosphere. The implications suggest that while SKB 3 Menteri has effectively curbed overt political signalling, it also highlights the complexities of enforcing neutrality in social contexts. Policymakers are encouraged to balance strict enforcement with clearer guidelines to avoid excessive restrictions on personal expressions while upholding the integrity of democratic processes.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of political thuggery in the management of parking business in Pekanbaru City through a patron-client perspective. In the parking business, the patron-client relationship involves political actors, government officials, and thugs forming a network of mutual benefits. This practice has an impact on increasing social injustice and hampers transparent parking governance. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results of the study showed that patrons provided legal and political protection to clients who were in charge of managing and securing parking areas informally. This study recommends the digitization of the parking system, strengthening regulations, and the involvement of civil society to break the chain of thuggery. This reform is expected to create fairer and more sustainable parking governance.
