Abstract

This research analyzes kinds and communicative functions of speech acts in amusing English-language memes about environmental awareness to support Sustainable, Development, Goals (SDGs) 13 Climate Action. Referring to Speech Act Theory, this study explores how humor functions as a pragmatic strategy to promote ecological messages in digital domains. The data was purposively collected from English-language memes on Instagram and Facebook from 2023 to 2025. Every meme was analyzed using pragmatic content analysis to determine illocutionary acts and identify their role in forming ecological discourse. Findings showed that assertive, directive, and expressive acts prevailed in the dataset, representing an effort to educate, criticize the state world, and encourage audiences to take sustainable actions. Expressive acts were the most dominant, using sarcasm and irony to express frustration and humor regarding environmental degradation. Multimodal nature of memes indicates that illocutionary force is co-constructed through text, image, typography, and visual composition, whereby pragmatic meaning arises from the whole semiotic design rather than the words alone. This study broadens the understanding of digital humor by framing memes as performative tools of environmental advocacy, not merely as entertainment. It also contradicts previous studies suggesting that assertive actions are commonly found in English-language memes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the asalib al-balaghah (rhetorical styles) found in selected prayers from Kitāb Bulūgh al-Marām by Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī, focusing on three main branches of balāghah: al-bayān (figurative semantics), al-ma‘ānī (contextual semantics), and al-badī‘ (aesthetic language). This research also seeks to answer how the uslūb al-du‘ā (style of supplication) in Bulūgh al-Marām can influence emotional intelligence. This research uses descriptive-qualitative method and stylistic approach of balaghiyyah and generative transformative with the help of emotional intelligence theory. This research is a library research that searches for information through books, articles, and scientific journals. The primary source of this research is the book Bulugh al-Maram by Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani. The secondary sources are books and articles related to the theme of uslub al-balaghah and emotional intelligence. Data obtained from these two sources were analyzed using content analysis and comparative methods. The results show that the prayers are composed with a beautiful and rhetorical Arabic style, this beauty is seen in three elements of al-balaghah. First, the al-bayan element appears in the use of metaphors and parables that are able to evoke inner feelings. Second, the al-ma‘ani is seen from the sentence structure and word choice that is in harmony with the condition of the soul and feelings. Third, the al-badi'‘ element is present through the play of sound and the beauty of language styles that add emotional appeal. These three elements combine to create a prayer style that touches the heart and strengthens the spiritual connection between humans and God. This research also proves that asalib al-balaghah in these prayers such as al-tashbih, al-isti‘arah, al-kinayah, al- majaz, al- itnab, al-jinas, al-tibaq, al-saja’ are also factors in building emotional intelligence. The language style in these beautiful prayers is proven to instill the values of self-awareness (al-wa‘y al-dhati), self-control (dabt al-nafsi), self-motivation (al-tahfiz al-dhati), empathy (al-ta‘atuf) and social skills (al-maharat al-ijtima‘iyyah) which are fundamental aspects of emotional intelligence. Through field studies, this research also proves empirically that asa>li>b al-balaghah contained in prayers affects the psychology of its readers and the practitioners.

Abstract

Family life in the Qur’an is not only regulated through legal injunctions but also shaped through supplicatory discourse that forms emotional, ethical, and spiritual orientations. Although Qur’anic duʿāʾ has often been studied as devotional practice, theological expression, or rhetorical beauty, its role in constructing Islamic family psychology remains underexplored. Existing studies on Islamic psychology and family resilience have emphasized religious coping, moral education, and spiritual well-being, yet they rarely examine how the rhetorical structure of Qur’anic family supplications produces psychological and normative meanings. This study aims to analyze how selected Qur’anic duʿāʾ related to spouses, children, parents, descendants, and moral continuity constructs a family psychology situated between supplication and normativity. Using a qualitative textual method, the article applies balāghah-based hermeneutics, thematic Qur’anic analysis, Islamic psychology, religious coping theory, and family resilience theory to selected verses, including QS Maryam [19]:4–6, QS Āl ʿImrān [3]:38, QS Ibrāhīm [14]:40–41, QS al-Baqarah [2]:128–129, QS al-Furqān [25]:74, QS al-Aḥqāf [46]:15, and QS al-Isrāʾ [17]:24. The findings show that Qur’anic duʿāʾ functions as spiritual attachment and emotional regulation, forms intergenerational moral responsibility, constructs family flourishing through qurrata aʿyun, and operates as normative discourse beyond formal family law. The study contributes to Qur’anic studies and Islamic family psychology by proposing duʿāʾ as a hermeneutic site where rhetoric, emotional formation, family ethics, and moral continuity converge.

Abstract

The translation of the Qur’an into local languages plays a strategic role in strengthening local linguistic identities in Indonesia and facilitating access to the holy text’s comprehension amidst the dominance of the national and global languages. However, studies on the translation of the Qur’an in the contexts of Palembang and Mandar in South Sulawesi remain limited, particularly concerning the dynamics of language identity, language attitudes, and the preservation of local languages. This study aims to examine the challenges and strategies in translating the Qur’an into Indonesian, Palembang, and Mandar, using a sociolinguistic approach to explore how these translations reflect the construction of linguistic identity among native speakers of these local languages. This study employs a qualitative method with a document analysis approach focusing on the official Qur’an translation texts published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, along with critical discourse analysis to identify translation strategies and ideological representations within the texts. The findings indicate that the translation of the Qur’an into local languages not only faces sociolinguistic, and theological challenges but also serves as a site for constructing linguistic identity that strengthens ethnolinguistic solidarity. The translation strategies employed, including cultural adaptation and communicative approaches, effectively enhance local communities’ comprehension of the holy text while simultaneously fostering a sense of belonging to their local languages. This study highlights the importance of language policies that support the sustainable translation of sacred texts into local languages as a means of preserving linguistic diversity and reinforcing cultural identity within the context of globalization.
