Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of Kai-Wait as social capital in strengthening interfaith solidarity in the Maluku indigenous community, especially in Petuanan Leisela, Buru Island. Kai-Wait, a kinship system that integrates indigenous and immigrant residents, functions as a social mechanism that fosters trust, respect, and cooperation amidst religious diversity. With a qualitative approach through ethnographic studies, this study was conducted through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with indigenous leaders and members of the Buru indigenous community. The results of the study revealed that Kai-Wait not only strengthens social networks and customary norms, but also functions as a symbol of inclusive solidarity, able to embrace differences in religious and cultural identities. This tradition instills moral values ?? such as mutual respect, cooperation, and shared responsibility, which are continuously passed down to the younger generation. In addition, Kai-Wait shows its relevance as a local wisdom strategy in facing modern challenges, such as social polarization and identity conflicts, as well as being a bridge for social reconciliation. The novelty of this study lies in the identification of Kai-Wait as a form of pluralistic and inclusive social capital, different from other traditions in Maluku, such as Pela-Gandong, which tend to be limited to communities bound by customary oaths. This finding provides a significant contribution to the study of local wisdom, interfaith social solidarity, and social reconciliation. This study recommends the preservation of Kai-Wait values through formal and non-formal education, as well as the adaptation of this tradition to promote social harmony in diverse communities.

Abstract

This study examines how local cultural values are integrated into the hidden curriculum to promote tolerance and peace in secondary schools in Maluku. It investigates the influence of traditions such as Pela, Gandong, Famili, Badati, Masohi, and Ma’anu, which are not formally included in the curriculum but play a crucial role in shaping students’ social behavior and fostering inclusive learning environments. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research provides a contextualized analysis of how these cultural values function within school settings. Data were gathered through observations and in-depth interviews with teachers and students. The findings highlight the significant role of local cultural values in fostering tolerance and peace. Pela and Gandong reinforce interfaith solidarity through collaborative student activities, while the concept of Famili cultivates a sense of belonging and mutual respect. Badati and Masohi promote cooperation through project-based learning, and Ma’anu encourages an appreciation for diversity. These findings suggest that a hidden curriculum rooted in local culture can strengthen social harmony in pluralistic school environments. Beyond Maluku, this study offers insights into how culturally embedded hidden curricula can inform inclusive educational policies and curriculum design, providing a framework for other diverse and conflict-prone regions. The research underscores the importance of integrating local cultural wisdom into education as a pathway to sustainable peacebuilding.

Abstract

The family is the primary space for cultivating values of justice and gender equality. However, in Negeri Hukurila, Ambon City, family education patterns remain gender-biased. Male and female roles are often rigidly distinguished, limiting women’s voices in household decision-making and confining girls to domestik spheres while boys are encouraged toward public roles. Such conditions risk perpetuating gender inequality and hindering children’s equal development. This community service program aimed to raise public awareness of inclusive and gender-responsive family education through participatory approaches grounded in local wisdom. Methods included socialization, training, technology application, and evaluation that involving traditional leaders, saniri negeri, religious figures, youth, and women. The results demonstrate increased community understanding of gender-responsive family concepts, greater equality in family dialogue, and the revitalization of local practices such as masohi (mutual cooperation) as a symbol of just family collaboration. The novelty of this program lies in integrating local wisdom to build family education patterns that respect gender equality, positioning indigenous communities as key agents of change. The study concludes that gender-responsive family education is well accepted when delivered through culturally relevant approaches. Future recommendations include expanding cross-sector collaboration, strengthening local cadres as change agents, and encouraging community-level policies to sustain inclusive family practices

Abstract

This article analyzes the role of the Ambon Peace Gong as a multidimensional space that integrates post-conflict memory, civic education, and community-based tourism. The study aims to understand how this monument is interpreted, managed, and utilized by local communities, visitors, and stakeholders within the broader context of post-conflict social transformation in Ambon, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach and case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis of museum materials and related policies. Thematic analysis was conducted to explore the symbolic, educational, and economic dimensions of the monument. The findings reveal that the Peace Gong functions not only as a reminder of past violence but has also evolved into a social arena that fosters civic values, expands public learning spaces, and creates economic opportunities through tourism rooted in local narratives. The novelty of this study lies in its interdisciplinary approach, viewing the monument as a living site whose meanings and functions are continuously negotiated. This research contributes to the discourse in social sciences and humanities, particularly in the fields of memorialization, peace education, and participatory tourism development, and recommends strengthening community involvement to sustain the relevance and future of peace sites in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores how young people in Hukurila, a customary village within the administrative area of Ambon City, use language to negotiate social identities amid the tension between traditional values and urban modernity. While Hukurila maintains customary institutions such as the mata rumah parentah system, ritual practices, and local language, its youth’s interaction with urban schools, digital media, and popular culture has fostered hybrid linguistic practices blending urban Indonesian, Ambon Malay, English, and digital symbols. Employing a sociolinguistic ethnography within an interpretive–critical paradigm, data were collected through participant observation, sociolinguistic interviews, recorded conversations, and online ethnography involving youth aged 13–20 across home, school, church, community, and social media contexts. Findings reveal the emergence of hybrid linguistic identities, where Ambon Malay indexes local solidarity, while urban Indonesian and English-mixed slang signify modernity and social mobility. The local Hukurila language is rarely used in daily interactions but retains symbolic value in customary and religious domains. Language ideologies have shifted, language now serves as a marker of coolness, social belonging, and global aspiration. The study introduces the concept of Urban–Adat Multilingualism, describing communities that sustain traditional linguistic systems within urban social environments. It advances sociolinguistic scholarship by linking offline and online ethnography to examine youth language as social and ideological practice, highlighting the need for inclusive language education and context-sensitive approaches to multilingual identity in Eastern Indonesia.
