Abstract

In the last few decades, religious studies have increasingly excited and attracted the attention of many scholars and groups. Those involved in religious studies are not only religious leaders and scientists in different fields but also politicians and policyholders in various circles. Religious studies is seen as an absolute necessity in the increasingly complex order of modern life. Many experts put their hopes on the intensification and extensification of religious studies in order to create a harmonious social life in this globalized world. In responding to the development of Western thought as a paradigm of religious studies, the concept of occidentalism is very important to be discussed. This article will focus on the discussion of occidentalism, specifically from the perspective of Mukti Ali who in the 1970s served as the Minister of Religious Affairs. As one of the influential figures in Islamic scholarship in Indonesia, he has contributed to the development and enlightenment of Islamic thought in Indonesia. This article argues that Ali’s concept of occidentalism represents the antithesis towards Western orientalism and the renewal of Islamic studies in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines the issue of radicalism in Pakistan, often identified as the "Land of Ali Jinnah," reflecting the values and vision of its founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Radicalism has been a deep-seated issue in Pakistan, with debates over whether religious or group factors play a more critical role in strengthening radical movements in the country. This article examines the historical development of radicalism in Pakistan, analyzes the factors that influence the spread of radical ideology, and considers the implications of this view on regional and global stability. Through a comprehensive analytical approach, it explores the role of religion as a central element in radicalism in Pakistan, highlighting the role of incorrect or extreme religious understandings in motivating individuals to engage in radical activity. It also examines how group factors such as economic inequality, political discontent and ethnic tensions are essential in strengthening radical movements in Pakistan. The result is that some extremist thinking is based on some of the conservative madrassa education curricula, and some people who lack access to education are, therefore, easily duped and pitted by vested interests. The importance of understanding the balance between religion and group factors in the context of radicalism in Pakistan is that prevention and countermeasures can be more effective. This investigation provides greater insight into the complexity of the issue. It provides a basis for formulating better strategies to address radicalism in the country, which will positively impact regional and global peace and stability. Contribution: This study contributes to a deeper understanding of radicalism in Pakistan by highlighting the interplay between extreme religious interpretations and socio-political conditions, providing a foundation for more effective counter-radicalism strategies.

Abstract

The question of what constitutes true happiness has been a core philosophical issue that has warranted multiple attempts in the attempt to provide a final answer, either from a purely religious or philosophical perspective. The issue of happiness is closely connected to the meaning of life and its ultimate outcome and purpose. The modern Muslim philosopher Muhammad Hossein Tabatabai discussed the nature of happiness at length. In his view, human beings instinctively strive to attain happiness or the ultimate good which can only be achieved through nearness to God. Therefore, true happiness requires the believer to commit righteous deeds and avoid sinful acts. This study follows a philosophical-Sufi approach and uses a descriptive-analytical method to examine the nature of happiness, the relationship between happiness, goodness and pleasure according to Tabatabai. In line with Islamic thought, true and lasting happiness can only be attained in the Hereafter, and happiness in this life, no matter how acutely and deeply felt, is merely a shadow of the true happiness of the believers who have attained God’s permission to enter Paradise.

Abstract

This research is a response to radical thinking in the name of religion. Some radical groups use the arguments of the religious text as reinforcements for acts of terrorism that have spread in several areas. This paper aims to dismantle the methodology of interpreting the verses of the al-Qur’an which are often used as justification for violence in the name of religion. This research is a qualitative research and this type of research is literature research by discussing books, both from primary and secondary books related to the theme being studied. The steps in this research are to explain the meaning and history of radicalization and deradicalization, collect verses of the Qur’an that are often interpreted radically, and explain the misinterpretations that have been widely politicized towards radical thinking. This article finds that there are two things that cause radicalism. first, there is a reduction in religious understanding due to ignorance and an incomplete understanding of religious texts. second, textual-normative understanding of religious texts. This article concludes that understanding religious texts (al-Qur'an and Hadith) requires a strong scientific basis. Radicalism arises because of the textual-normative method of understanding that often loses the substance of the text. As a result, his religious understanding becomes counter-productive to the spirit of Islam which is rahmatan lil alamin.

Abstract

This article identifies the crisis of Muslim identity in science, caused by the blind adoption of Western secular science that separates spiritual values from knowledge, contrary to the Islamic concept of tawḥīdi. The researcher highlights the urgency of Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas' Islamization of science in integrating spiritual values in science and overcoming the dominance of Western secular thought that threatens Islamic identity and theology. For this research to run according to its purpose, researchers use analytical methods to analyze current problems in science and religion. The result was that Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas emphasized the establishment of an Islamic epistemological framework through the basis of the Islamic Worldview. Islamization is a response to the negative impact of Western science on society, by offering an Islamic worldview as the basis for Muslim life.
