Abstract

Adolescents' involvement as perpetrators of criminality in Indonesia has gone beyond the patterns of deviant behavior and actions categorized as juvenile delinquency. Adolescents' involvement as perpetrators of criminality has not been given much scientific attention in previous studies. This study focuses on the question, "How is the involvement of adolescents as perpetrators of criminality that occurs in Indonesia?" This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to exploring the forms, characteristics, and factors that influence a teenager to become a perpetrator of criminality disseminated through online media coverage. The collection and reading of online news focused on news titles containing criminality cases involving teenagers by using the search keyword "Involvement of teenagers as perpetrators of criminality in Indonesia" on the Google search engine. The findings in this study show that the involvement of teenagers as perpetrators of criminality has gone beyond the deviant behavior patterns of juvenile delinquency. The context can be reflected through the forms and characteristics of the acts committed by teenagers, ranging from maltreatment, drug abuse, to murder. This study also recommends the importance of looking at the welfare of adolescents as perpetrators of criminality and the law enforcement process to obtain a comprehensive and more empirical understanding.

Abstract

Global peace is a shared aspiration that can only be achieved through cross-national collaboration and the role of international institutions. Education plays a strategic role in instilling peace values from an early age. This community service activity was conducted at the Indonesian School of Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) to enhance teachers and students understanding of the roles of international institutions such as the United Nations, UNESCO, UNICEF, and ASEAN in promoting global peace. The program included educational training, workshops, diplomacy simulations, and the preparation of peace-based learning plans. The results indicated a significant improvement in participants knowledge and skills in integrating global issues into learning. Furthermore, the program strengthened values of tolerance, cooperation, and social awareness within the school environment. This initiative serves as a model for implementing global education and character building in Indonesian schools abroad.

Abstract

This article critically examines the phenomenon of community vigilantism against criminals because these actions are often legitimised by dominant cultural knowledge and meanings. However, this phenomenon tends to be absent from the literature. In addition to responding to the gaps in previous studies, this research also aims to explain the characteristics, factors, and implications of community vigilantism against criminals. This research is based on descriptive qualitative research using a case study approach. The important findings of this study show that the vigilante violence perpetrated by the community against criminals appears in the form of physical and psychological violence, as well as acts of property destruction. These acts are not only influenced by factors such as mass hysteria, disregard for moral standards, and low social cohesion but also have long implications for counterproductive social conditions. This study contributes significantly to evaluating the normalisation of vigilante violence acts against criminals in public spaces while proposing strategies to prevent the adverse effects of vigilante violence acts on social harmony.

Abstract

Indonesia, as the world’s largest archipelagic state, faces significant maritime security challenges, particularly in strategic areas such as Dumai waters bordering the Malacca Strait, highlighting the urgency of strengthening patrol strategies to prevent maritime crimes such as illegal fishing, smuggling, and shipping-related offenses. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of patrols conducted by the Water and Air Police (Polairud) of Dumai Police Resort in preventing maritime crime using the perspective of Situational Crime Prevention (SCP). This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach and a case study design, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving purposively selected informants, and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Polairud patrols have effectively implemented SCP strategies, including target hardening, access control, increasing the risk, reducing rewards, and removing excuses, which have contributed to reducing opportunities for maritime crime, although challenges remain such as the vast surveillance area and evolving criminal patterns. In conclusion, Polairud patrols in Dumai play a significant role in maritime crime prevention, but require further enhancement through technological support, stronger inter-agency coordination, and more adaptive strategies, and future research is recommended to explore the integration of surveillance technology and cross-sector collaboration in strengthening maritime security.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the rationality of illegal street vendors on Jalan HR. Soebrantas Panam. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach and a case study type, with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation of informants analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the rationality of illegal street vendors on Jalan HR. Soebrantas Panam is the result of a systematic cost-benefit calculation in accordance with the concept of Rational Choice Theory. The decision of illegal street vendors to continue trading in illegal locations is not simply a spontaneous or reckless act, but rather an adaptive strategy that arises from considering the risks of enforcement, economic opportunities, and the social conditions they face. Rational Choice Theory is able to comprehensively explain illegal behavior, both at the individual and collective levels. Illegal street vendors evaluate risks, assess profit opportunities, and adjust strategies based on their social and economic context. They balance financial gains with the risks of enforcement, utilize social networks to optimize survival opportunities, and make tactical adjustments based on previous experience. This strategy demonstrates that illegal street vendor behavior is the result of rational, adaptive, and systematic calculations.
