Abstract

As a powerful medium to persuade people to buy a product or service, ads have long been used in many forms. This study attempts to understand the language use and graphic design of comic as one of the ads forms in Jakarta-based Indonesian media, particularly in the period of 1940-1960s. By employing different approaches in Linguistic Anthropology, Mass Communication and Graphic Design, the findings show a close relationship between the language and the graphic design of the ads with the society who consumed them as well as a trend towards informal language use and popular culture.

Abstract

This article presents the result of a pilot project which seeks to examine the pattern of socio-cultural interaction between the Chinese people and other ethnic groups in the multicultural City of Medan, North Sumatra. The purpose of this article is to examine various obstacles in the pattern of socio-cultural interaction among those two groups of people. This article utilizes both field data and the data obtained from bibliographical references. This qualitative research applies the ethnographical approach and is conducted by observing various activities and behaviors that arise from the pattern of socio-cultural interaction between the Chinese people and other ethnic groups in Medan. From this project, we draw a preliminary conclusion that the Medanese Chinese have established domination over numerous areas of life in Medan by engaging in various socio-cultural activities, both conspicuously and inconspicuously. Such hegemonic tendencies have contributed to creating a negative perception of the Medanese Chinese among other members of the plural society in Medan. In addition to that, the difficulty of Medanese Chinese to assimilate themselves with the local populace only increases the social gap between them and other local communities. These factors constitute challenges for the Medanese Chinese to interact with people from other ethnic groups.

Abstract

The development of social media in the realm of democracy through internet technology has been used by numerous groups for various purposes. A number of software programs with their applications make it easier for someone to produce countless content on social media. One of the functions of such programs is to create different images in relation to the 2014 Indonesian presidential election. In the 2014 presidential election, there was a rivalry between the two groups of voters who attacked each other using various image products through social media. Those supporting Joko Widodo (Jokowi) created a campaign image in the form of an avatar template containing the number “2” with the words "I Stand on the Right Side". The image then went viral and was responded to by the voters for the presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto with a variety of contending images. This research documents and analyzes the various images created and circulated during the 2014 Indonesian presidential election, as well as reconstructing the conflict between the two groups of voters in the presidential election in the context of Indonesian democracy, which was still in its development. Data was collected from various websites and social media from May to October 2017. This research was conducted through historical methods. Meanwhile, in examining the various images, this research used a visual communication approach to graphic design.

Abstract

Research is an essential element in the process of language preservation. The role of research in the language field is to develop the use of language as a medium of knowledge. Language as a communication tool has several functions, one of which is a cognitive function: language users can convey thoughts. This research conducts the process using mixed analysis methods. Retrieval of field data, which then goes through a process of classification, analysis, and conclusion in the end, must be acculturated with data taken from reference literature. Qualitative and quantitative methods are maximized to get the best results in each process. The existence of language as a medium of knowledge is realized if a language does not lose its character. One strategy that can be used in researching languages, especially those that are endangered, is Sociosemiotic or Social Semiotic. Sociosemiotic as a framework is very important to read the signs and symbols that live and are dynamic in society. These sign and symbol variables are the key to determining the success of analyzing and concluding problems and their solutions.

Abstract

The research objectively analyzed artists’ actions and strategic reactions in the urban areas of Bandung and Yogyakarta in Indonesia during the extremely turbulent COVID-19 pandemic from March 2020 to early 2021. The pandemic greatly impacted the lives of artists and practitioners because of stringent governmental prohibitions that prohibited public art events. The research examined practitioners’ experiences concerning their reliance or autonomy from government funding when engaging in arts-related endeavors. The research methodology was based on gathering data from social media and field investigations; a comprehensive collection of posters, photos, and relevant notes was compiled using a cultural studies framework. In addition, interviews were performed with arts practitioners and communities, specifically examining their involvement on social media platforms. A detailed investigation was conducted by carefully analyzing the interview data to clarify the differences between art practitioners in Bandung and Yogyakarta. It is found that the research distinguishes between individuals who receive government sponsorship and those who operate independently. It enhances the overall comprehension of power dynamics between arts practitioners and the government in the distinct setting of the COVID-19 epidemic, including those who operated autonomously. The research utilizes a cultural studies framework to examine the power dynamics between artists and the government in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
