Abstract

Introduction: Halitosis is the smell of bad breath that comes out of the mouth. Gambir contained catechins which is a material that helps in inhibited bacteria and VSC (Volatic Sulfur Compound) as the cause of halitosis.Purpose: The aim of research to assess the effectiveness of gambir leaves against halitosis is caused by plaque. Methods: The method in this research is pre experimental research with 18 research subjects students. Halitosis parameter measurements made before and after the use of gambir for 3 days. VSC gas is measured using the tool "Oralchroma". Statistical data processing is done with the Wilcoxon test (p <0.05 as significant level). Results: There were decreased levels in each of the gas before and after gargling on treatment. H2S levels down to 100%, CH3SH fell by 43%, (CH3)2S down 24%. The three gas is visible gas reduction percentage is the highest H2S and the lowest is (CH3)2S. Wilcoxon test results obtained H2S sig 0.109 (p <0.05), CH3SH sig 0.005 (p <0.05) and (CH3)2S sig 0.009 (p <0.05).Conclusion: Gambir leaf decoction is effective against halitosis is caused by plaque.

Abstract

Introduction: Children with special needs have physical limitations and the ability to maintain their oral hygiene, so it needs to be chosen the proper tooth brushing methods for maintaining oral hygiene and prevent periodontal disease.Purpose: This study aimed to know differences of the effectiveness of horizontal tooth brushing methods and foneson the dental plaque index in children with visual impairment. Methods: This research was a quasy experimental laboratory with pre-test and post-test design. The study was conducted on 26 blind children aged 6-13 years in MILB YKTM Budi Asih, SLB-A DriaAdi, and SLB Negeri Semarang that were divided into two groups of horizontal and fonestooth brushing method. Dental plaque was measured using PHP plaque index, examined the dental crown facial or lingual parts by dividing each tooth crown into 5 subdivisions, plaque index inspected before and after 1 week of brushing method application, then analyzed by paired t-test and independent t test at a significance level ofp <0.05. Results: The mean of plaque index before and after brushing the teeth with horizontal method was 2.56 and 0.956 down to 1.61, whereas in the fonesmethod was 3.03 and 1.68down to 1.35. Plaque index before and after brushing teeth both on horizontal and fones method was statistically significant(p <0.05). But the effectiveness of both methods were not different or similar (p = 0.179).Conclusion: There was no difference of effectiveness between horizontal and fones tooth brushing methods on the dental plaque index in children with visual impairment.

Abstract

Background: Composite resin is one of the most used materials in dentistry because of the simplicity and high aesthetic value. One of the varieties of composite resin is prepolymerized composite resin. Some research show that prepolymerized composite resin has relatively low mechanical strength. Therefore fiber needs to be added in prepolymerized composite resin. The aim of this research is to find out the effect of adding non dental glass fiber into tensile strength fiber reinforced composite. Method: This research used true experimental method with post test only control group design, there are two groups, the first one is prepolymerized composite resin with additional non dental glass fiber. The data has been tested with parametric independent T-test. Result: The result showed the average flexural strength of prepolymerized composite resin without additional non dental glass fiber was 10.6625 Mpa, while the prepolymerized composite resin + non dental glass fiber was also 18.2263 Mpa. Independent T-test showed the p value = 0.000 Conclusion: The conclusion of this research is that prepolymerized resin + non dental glass fiber has higher tensile strength than composite resin without additional non dental glass fiber, thus it can be used as alternative choice applied in dentistry.
