Abstract

Studies on the integration of moral, cultural, and religious values in the non-religion subject have been greatly raised in these recent years. This research aims to find out the teachers’ strategy and challenges encountered in integrating Islamic values in English language teaching. The descriptive method with a qualitative approach is employed in this research. The subject of this research consists of three English teachers who teach in different grades from seventh to ninth at SMP Pesantren Modern IMMIM Putra Makassar. The data of this research are obtained from the observation sheet and interview guide. The data analysis technique in this research uses three steps, namely identification, classification, and explanation. The result of this research shows that there are four strategies employed by English teachers in integrating Islamic values in ELT. First, the teachers give direct advice to the students. Second, the teachers associate the lesson topic with pertinent Islamic teaching by quoting verses from the Qur’an and/or Hadith. Third, the teachers get the students used to worship through the habituation of religious activities. Fourth, the teachers refer to someone, or themselves to introduce some Islamic values to the students. The teachers also encounter several challenges in integrating Islamic values in ELT. First, the limited availability of English textbooks integrated to Islamic values. Second, the teachers have limited knowledge of how to optimally integrate Islamic values into the teaching and learning process. Third, the teachers have a limited time to provide and prepare the English learning materials associated to Islamic values. Further studies such as research and development of English textbooks that integrated to Islamic values for high school students are expected to be conducted in an attempt to solve the teachers’ challenges revealed in this research.

Abstract

Reading plays a critical role in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, serving not only as a core linguistic skill but also as a gateway to academic success. This study explores EFL students’ perceptions of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and examines its influence on their motivation to engage in reading activities. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the data were collected from fifth-semester students enrolled in the Critical Reading course at Universitas Negeri Makassar through questionnaires and interviews. The findings revealed that students generally perceived CSR positively, recognizing its benefits in improving comprehension, clarifying complex texts, and promoting active participation. The CSR stages of preview, click & clunk, get the gist, and wrap up were largely seen as clear and practical, though some initial confusion was noted. Moreover, CSR fostered students’ engagement and enjoyment by creating an interactive and collaborative learning environment. Importantly, the strategy significantly boosted students’ reading motivation, both intrinsically and extrinsically, by making reading more structured, enjoyable, and socially rewarding. Further research could explore its long-term effects on academic achievement and its adaptability across different language proficiency levels.

Abstract

Public speaking is a vital skill for students, particularly those majoring in English. However, many students still experience obstacles in terms of self-confidence and the courage to speak in public. This community service activity aims to improve public speaking skills through practice and feedback-based training. The training involved 25 students from various English study programs at Makassar State University with an experiential learning approach that included theory sessions, impromptu speech practice, and reflection. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in three main aspects: awareness of the importance of speaking skills, increased self-confidence, and courage to appear in public speaking. As many as 90% of participants stated that this training helped them be more prepared to speak in public. This activity shows that the practice and feedback approach is effective in building students' soft communication skills and is worthy of being integrated into self-development programs in higher education.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in HyFlex-based final project guidance and identify the challenges experienced by supervisors and students during the process. The research uses a mixed methods approach involving 12 supervisors and 38 students who actively use AI in the preparation of thesis. Data collection was carried out through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis techniques of the Miles & Huberman model. The results showed that the majority of students (94.7%) used AI to help prepare thesis, especially in compiling writing frameworks, improving grammar, understanding theory, and speeding up the revision process. Lecturers also use AI, but more carefully, especially to provide examples of writing improvements and help clarify basic concepts. Although AI has been shown to improve the effectiveness of HyFlex tutoring, both groups face different challenges: students tend to face technical barriers such as unstable networks, device limitations, AI answer errors, and difficulty creating precise prompts; while lecturers face academic challenges such as false references, theoretical inaccuracies, and the risk of student dependence on AI. Overall, the study concludes that AI has great potential to improve the quality, flexibility, and efficiency of final project guidance, but its use still requires strong digital literacy, academic verification, and clear ethical guidelines.
