Abstract

Abstract. Language teaching has developed with the support of techniques, media, and learning approaches that complement each other. However, the need to develop linguistic skills never arrest and need to be improved continuously. One of the models developed in the early 21st century is adaptive learning, but this learning tends to be more widely applied outside of language teaching. Therefore, This study aims to find concrete forms of adaptive learning that can be applied in appropriately developing speaking skills in German. A qualitative, descriptive approach is employed in this study, focusing on an inductive inquiry into phenomena and fact-finding on adaptive learning. The learning source employed in the learning is a coursebook called Netzwerk Deutsch als Fremdsprache. To bridge the rigidity of the content and the less flexible learning aspects delivered by the coursebook, we tried to integrate it with the campus internal learning management system Besmart-Moodle. There were 12 students (initials P1-12) who participated in learning and practising speaking-oriented learning. We collected data using video recordings, digital questionnaires and field notes. Afterwards, we analyzed participants' conduct and responses using coding procedures to formulate categories relevant to adaptive learning forms. The results showed that most participants viewed this learning positively, and it supported improving their speaking skills effectively. In addition, for both students and lecturers, this learning model thoroughly impacted the learning process concerning certain linguistic facets and enriched previous research. Keywords: Adaptive learning, German, Speaking Skills, Digital Learning, Besmart

Abstract

Curriculum changes directly impact learning objectives, content selection, and the use of coursebooks as learning resources. In reality, teachers tend to choose coursebooks that are different from the curriculum direction. This study aims to determine how teachers view the selection of German coursebooks and what criteria they used to decide coursebooks for teaching in secondary school. Respondents were 20 teachers in Yogyakarta and Central Java. We use a qualitative descriptive approach to analyse interview-based data and records through reduction techniques, categorisation, verification and conclusion. The results showed that 75% of teachers want to choose books independently, not determined by the national curriculum on a mandatory level. This study proposed thirteen criteria for book selection based on the data analysis obtained from respondents. From these criteria, teachers can make priority choices and apply selected coursebooks to lessons.

Abstract

Improving teacher competence is important in learning German. To improve the quality of learning German, the Devotion Team at the Department of German Language Education FBS-UNY held a Classroom Action Research training for German language teachers who are members of the Indonesian German Teacher Association (IGBJI). This Community Service Activity is realized in the form of a 32-hour training (workshop) which is divided into 3 meeting sessions. First session contains an explanation of the theories and methods of Classroom Action Research. Meanwhile, second session contains mentoring activities to find research ideas, and last Session contains presentations of research proposals from selected participants. This training activity is carried out entirely online using the Zoom application. Classroom Action Research training activities can be carried out properly and get the results as planned. The attendance rate of registered participants is in the good category. Average attendance of 50 people per session (69.4%) of the total 72 registrants. Participation of participants in the discussion is also good. At the end of the activity, 23 Classroom Action Research proposals were produced. Thus, German teachers are able to apply the results of this activity by observing the state of learning German in their respective schools and taking scientific steps to carry out action research.

Abstract

(Title: Class Action Research in the Context of German Language Learning). As a means of problem-solving, research methods continue to evolve. In the '40s began to be known action research, and this research was also applied in the classroom or called Class Action Research (CAR). This type of research is becoming increasingly popular to evaluate the learning process of German Language Teaching. However, the focus of CAR talks in German language learning is still likely to be rare. This paper discusses the characteristics and application of CAR in German language learning. In addition, this article also reviews the situation of German learning in general. Thus the article can contribute scientifically to teachers and educators in improving performance in their fields. Keywords: Action Research, CAR, Learning, German Language

Abstract

This study investigates how spatial and temporal deixis shape readers’ understanding of Ronya Othmann’s Die Sommer (2020), a novel alternating between German and Kurdish settings and perspectives. A qualitative analysis of deictic expressions identifies forms of spatial deixis (e.g., specific place names; vertical references like “sits on the floor” vs. “starry sky above”; and dynamic movements) and temporal deixis (e.g., historical years, seasonal markers, tense shifts, and temporal adverbs). Results show spatial deixis anchors Leyla’s story in intercultural spaces, guiding reader orientation and evoking her bicultural identity amid historical conflict. Temporal deixis places events in the general political and historical context, linking personal biography to collective memory. This study presents deixis as a narrative device that enables deeper reader involvement in a transcultural storyworld. By integrating Bühler’s and Ehlich’s deixis theories with narrative analysis, it contributes to understanding narrative structure, complex intercultural dynamics, and multiple cultural perspectives in contemporary transcultural literature and narratives.
