Abstract

The teaching writing is still in need of interesting teaching media to support its pedagogy as teaching writing is associated with difficult subject to be taught. Prior researches have been conducted on teaching writing area and the result suggested conducting more study on teaching writing effectively. This study attempts to fulfill the gap and takes teaching media as the focus of the research. This article investigated the employment of animated films as a teaching medium in the teaching of narrative writing tests, as well as if they are still effective in supporting the learning process. The sample of the research was taken from the students of a Junior high school in Parepare, Indonesia which was chosen purposively. Online Google Forms was employed as research tools for the study, and the questionnaire and test writing were used to collect data. Quantitative analysis was used in analyzing the data gathered. Regarding the research result, the data revealed that there is difference result between before and after the research. Students respond positively to an animation video utilized in the study as an alternate media in teaching narrative text of writing. They enjoyed the learning process of writing narrative text via animation film as the media as well as improved their positive energy in writing. It can be suggested for the next researcher to study more in another issue of animation film for teaching.

Abstract

This research was conducted to obtain the influence of muhadharah as an extracurricular activity on students’ speaking ability. This study was qualitative research. The participants in the study consist of 15 eighth-grade students of junior high school (one of the private boarding schools in South Sulawesi). The researcher conducted interviews to obtain data from participants. The results of this study indicated that muhadharah is a good school extracurricular activity that can affect students’ speaking ability. The result of interviews shows that muhadharah as extracurricular activity significantly affects the students’ speaking ability in English. For example, in debriefing in speech procedures, increasing students’ vocabulary, learning how to make facial expressions or body gestures, and mentally training students to speak in front of the public. The interview result also shows deficiencies in extracurricular activities such as muhadharah. When the action is inappropriate because it is carried out at night, it takes students’ rest time and makes some students tired and sleepy. Some also said there are penalties if students are not joining muhadharah.

Abstract

This research-based on the students’ problem regarding English teaching especially speaking. It was caused by the teaching media applied in the classroom, where the students not interested to study. This problem was also caused by several factors such as the students in the classroom were bored and not motivated in teaching taught by using media. Consequently, the students’ speaking ability was low. Therefore, the objectives of the research are To find out whether or not the use of YouTube-based video via Zoom able to make students interesting to start speaking at eighth-grade students of UPTD SMP Negeri 7 Parepare. And how it can give progress to students speaking ability. The researcher applied a pre-experimental design (quantitative descriptive one tail), with two groups of pretest and posttest design. The researcher carries out the material by using YouTube-based video Via Zoom. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 7 Parepare academic year 2020/2021. The sample of the research was taken by using cluster random sampling which consisted of 22 students from one class taken from the population of the eighth-grade student of UPTD SMP Negeri 7 Parepare, VIII.1. The result of the data analysis showed that the students speaking ability were improved, showed by the mean score of the pretest was (53,77). Besides that the mean score of the posttest was (72,54). It showed that the speaking ability of the eighth-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 7 Parepare was got progress by implementing YouTube-based video.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the benefits provided for the ownership of English test certificate (TKBI) for job seekers and employees in a job. The need for English test that is used at the level of education as a condition to complete the study is now starting to penetrate into recruitment requirements in the world of work. Therefore, the policy of English test becomes a condition of recruitment of workers in various agencies is currently the main topic.This study uses a qualitative case study research method with the design of participants from job seekers and employees as research objects. The object studied consisted of 5 people consisting of 2 job seekers and 3 employees from different agencies and for data collection sourced from observations, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the participants supported the many benefits obtained from the ownership of English test certificates, especially to support their careers in the world of work. But on the other hand, this study also found the conclusion that the policy to make the English test a condition of recruitment in various agencies is still not appropriate to apply and the application of the test must adjust to the needs of the relevant agencies.

Abstract

This study aim to train students' vocabulary abilities using scrabble. Based on the data from the observations of the researcher through the student's vocabulary knowledge test, the students' ability was still classified as low before got treatment. This is caused by the teacher's media which makes students less interested in the English learning process. So the researchers tried to improve students' vocabulary skills by using the Scrabble game in seventh grade students at SMPN 3 Parepare. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design. The population was 60 students consisting of 30 students each class at SMPN 3 Parepare. Class VII.5 as the experimental class and class VII.4 as the control class. Researcher using random sampling in took sampling in this research. Then the researchers used the pre-test and post-test for data collection. The results of the data analysis showed that the students' vocabulary knowledge skills increased in the learning process using the Scrabble game. This is indicated by the difference between the students' mean score in the experimental class in the pre-test (54.08) post-test (77.78) and the control class in the pre-test (47.31) post-test (62.3) while the value difference distance is 23.7 for the experimental class and 14.99 for the control class. So, this means that the vocabulary skills of seventh grade students at SMPN 3 Parepare have a significant increase. In conclusion, the use of scrabble in training the vocabulary skills of students at SMPN 3 Parepare for the 2020/2021 school year.

Abstract

Speaking is one way to communicate in which ideas and thought delivered through message orally. To enable students to communicate, we need to apply the language in real communication. Personality plays an important role to improve speaking ability. The characteristic of people which causes consistency of feeling, thinking, and behavior. One aspect that constructs personality is extrovert-introvert. The purpose of this study is to generally try to find out which one of the Extrovert and Introvert students that have the better speaking achievement and to Investigate whether there is a difference between the Extrovert and Introvert students personality in speaking achievement in eighth grade at SMP Negeri 10 Parepare. The method used in this research is quantitative research and Two-Way Analysis of Variance. This research involved only one class of eight grade students in SMP Negeri Parepare. All of the samples are 32 students. This research was done in august in the new semester of the first-grade students in the academic year 2018/2019. In this study, the researcher used a questionnaire to know between extrovert and introvert students. This research is started by collecting theory after that giving the students personality tests to the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 10 Parepare and then classifying the extrovert student and introvert student. Then, after classifying students' personalities, the researcher gave students' speaking scores to design comparing the personality of the two students with their speaking scores. The speaking score of extroverted students was 75.92, on average, where the average introverted student was 71.67. This means that the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted. It can be assumed that there is no significant difference between extroverted and introverted students on the speaking achievement of students, but extroverted students have higher English competency skills because of their natural willingness to speak than introverted students. Sometimes introverted students can match extroverted students with their unique strengths.

Abstract

Muhadhoroh is a human activity in discussing a problem by giving a speech or discussion which is attended by many people. In this case, muhadhoroh is one of an training activity that focused on the way of students speak. Therefore, The objective of this study was to find out how is the influence of muhadharoh as extracurricular activities on students' speaking ability in PPM Rahmatul Asri. This study used qualitative research. The participants in the study consisted of 14 eighth grade students at PPM Rahmatul Asri junior high school. Researchers conducted interviews to obtain data from participants. The results of this study indicate that extracurricular muhadharah is a good school extracurricular activity that can affect students' speaking ability based on the results of interviews, the results of interviews show that muhadharah extracurricular activities greatly affect students' speaking ability in English. As for the supporting things contained in muhadharah activities such as debriefing in speech procedures, increasing students' vocabulary, learning how to make facial expressions or body gestures and also being able to directly train students mentally to speak in public. The results of the interview also show that there are deficiencies in extracurricular activities such as muhadharah when the activity is not appropriate because it is carried out at night so that it takes students' rest time and makes some students tired and sleepy, there are also students who say that in this activity there are penalties if students violate.

Abstract

To meet the requirements of the fourth industrial revolution, education plays a critical role in creating skilled and marketable human capital, so an instructional model that promotes student self-directed learning is needed. The digital era has had a major effect on English Language Teaching (ELT), allowing teachers to perform distance or combined learning. Blended learning is a learning model that focuses on promoting student individuality through the usage of various mobile technologies. Consequently, The purpose of this research is to provide information about an instructional template for a new blended learning model that uses the ADDIE model to help students develop self-directed learning. The ADDIE model is a modular framework that includes all of the required elements for creating effective ELT instruction. This study was conducted in Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. This paper also discusses a number of modern technologies that enable students to obtain individualized attention and new learning opportunities. As a result of this research, a new blended learning model has been developed to assist students in developing self-directed learning skills in English through the use of a variety of modern technologies.
