Abstract

Tunas Makmur Farmers Group I of Ibru Village, Mestong District, Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province has not yet made optimal use of a large amount of agricultural, plantation and industrial waste, due to farmers' lack of knowledge about biochar and its use to improve soil productivity. For this reason, the implementing team offers an easy, cheap and sustainable solution to manage and utilize abundant sources that can be used as a source of biochar. The objectives of implementing this community service activity can be achieved through: 1) counseling and training about the benefits of biochar to improve the physical and chemical properties of soil, 2) demonstration of making biochar from agricultural, plantation and industrial waste using drum pyrolysis, 3) assistance in calculating the dose given and application in the field through demonstrations on partner land on how to use biochars properly. Partners in this activity earn their main income from being food crop and plantation farmers. Agricultural, plantation and industrial waste is usually piled up on land and wasted because farmers do not yet have knowledge about the benefits of this waste. After conducting socialization and education through counseling and demonstrations about making biochar from agricultural and industrial waste, farmers have the motivation to use this waste as a source of soil carbon and as a soil conditioner.

Abstract

Introduction: Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a major environmental problem characterized by low pH and elevated heavy metals such as Fe and Mn that can contaminate aquatic ecosytems. Environmentally friendly treatment alternatives include water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) for phytoremediation and biochar for metal adsorption and pH buffering Objective: To analyze the effects of water hyacinth and biochar on increasing pH and reducing Fe and Mn concentrations in AMD Method: An experimental study was conducted using combination treatments of water hyacinth and biochar at several dosage levels. Measured parameters included pH and Fe–Mn concentrations. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at a 5% significance level. Results and Discussion: Water hyacinth did not significantly increase pH but significantly reduced Fe at 15 stems. Biochar significantly raised pH toward near-neutral conditions and reduced Fe and Mn, with the best performance at 20 g L⁻¹. Combined treatments were more effective than single treatments, increasing pH to 6.5–7.5 and achieving >99% Fe and Mn removal Conclusion: Water hyacinth–biochar combinations offer a promising, low-cost, and eco-friendly AMD treatment via synergistic phytoremediation and adsorption

Abstract

Abstract

Perlakuan meliputi pengolahan tanah konvensional (P0), olah tanah minimum + 30% jerami padi (P1), olah tanah minimum + 60% jerami padi (P2), tanpa olah tanah + 30% jerami padi (P3), dan tanpa olah tanah + 60% jerami padi (P4).

Abstract

Spodosols are widely distributed across Indonesia, covering approximately 2.16 million hectares, presenting significant potential for utilization as industrial forest plantation land, heavily reliant on its physical properties. The selection of the type of HTI plants to be cultivated depends on their adaptability. Eucalyptus is one plant known for its good adaptability to less fertile soil. This research was conducted on the land of PT. Wirakarya Sakti for 3 months, from February to April 2023, located in District 1, Betara District, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province. The aim of the research is to investigate the impact of land use planted with Eucalyptus compared to conservation forest on the physical properties of the soil. The research utilized a field survey method covering an area of approximately 326.4 hectares and the determination of points and sample collection using the stratified random sampling method. Samples were taken at locations including the conservation forest and land planted with Eucalyptus aged 1, 2, and 3 years, with 6 samples taken at depths of 0-30 cm and 30-60 cm, totaling 48 samples. Observed variables included soil texture, organic matter, bulk density, total pore space, moisture content, and permeability. The research results indicate that the physical properties of Spodosol soil include high soil volume weight due to the presence of an albic horizon in the upper layer and a spodic horizon in the lower layer, as well as high organic carbon content in the spodic horizon

Abstract

Smallholder oil palm plantations generally do not apply organic fertilizer management systems or soil conservation techniques, whereas large private plantations (PT. MSP) apply organic fertilizers in the form of empty fruit bunches and implement soil conservation practices. Differences in land management between smallholder plantations and large-scale oil palm companies influence the physical properties of the soil. This study was conducted to compare the quality of soil physical properties in oil palm plantation areas of smallholder plantations and large private plantations (PT. MSP) in Bungo Regency, Jambi Province. The study employed a Systematic Grid Survey method, in which undisturbed and disturbed soil samples were collected at a depth of 0–30 cm within several Homogeneous Land Units (HLUs). The soil samples were subsequently analyzed for soil texture, bulk density, total pore space, moisture content, aggregate stability, and organic matter content. The resulting data were used to calculate the Soil Physical Quality Index (SPQI) as an indicator of soil physical quality. The results indicated that soil quality in the PT. Mega Sawindo Perkasa plantation was classified as ‘moderate,’ with an average SPQI value ranging from 0.59 to 0.69. In contrast, the smallholder plantations were categorized as ‘fairly poor,’ with an average SPQI value ranging from 0.50 to 0.56. To improve soil quality, it is recommended that smallholder plantations apply organic fertilizers and implement terracing practices to reduce erosion and enhance soil structure.
