Abstract

The aging process that feeled by elderly will cause a decrease in functional and cellular functions. The factors that influence this process are divided into two factors, internal factors such as free radicals and external factors such as lifestyle, environment, and food. Free radicals in the body can be neutralized by antioxidants that come from a good lifestyle and foods that contain antioxidants. This study uses a qualitative ethnographic method by conducting interviews using a questionnaire combined with respondent observations. The questionnaire used is divided into three analyzes, there are symptom analysis, lifestyle analysis, and food analysis. Then the scores on the three analyzes will be added up and produce qualitative conclusions. The sample was determined by purposive sampling with analysis of the relationship between each of independent variables using a correlation test using SPSS application. The symptoms and the lifestyle lived by the elderly in Kelurahan Sukarame, Bandar Lampung play an important role in the personal antioxidant profile while the food intake chosen by the elderly has a lower role than symptoms and lifestyle. Physical activities such as exercise and morning walks and minimizing UV exposure with a combination of taking vitamin supplements routinely will maximize the aging process of the elderly in Kelurahan Sukarame, Bandar Lampung.

Abstract

Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) teridentifikasi di Indonesia pada awal Maret 2020. Salah satu golongan yang terdampak pandemi COVID-19 adalah lansia. Penurunan kinerja fisik dalam melakukan aktivitas seiring bertambahnya usia dapat mengakibatkan menurunnya harga diri pada lanjut usia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa apakah terdapat hubungan kualitas hidup terhadap harga diri lansia selama pandemi COVID-19. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif korelasi dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Populasi penelitian ini yaitu lansia 60 tahun ke atas yang tinggal di Kelurahan Pulo Gadung Jakarta Timur. Total 50 responden yang dipilih secara acak dengan penetapan sampel menggunakan cluster random sampling. Peneliti merandom dari jumlah populasi lansia berdasarkan daerah populasi untuk dijadikan sampel penelitian. Variabel independen adalah kualitas hidup dan variabel dependen adalah harga diri. Analisa data dilakukan secara analisa bivariat dengan alat bantu program SPSS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara kualitas hidup terhadap harga diri rendah pada lansia selama pandemi COVID-19 dengan nilai p 0,039

Abstract

Pada Maret 2020, WHO menetapkan sebagai pandemi Covid-19. Pada masa pandemi menjaga kesehatan lansia sangatlah penting terutama yang memiliki penyakit diabetes. Diabetes merupakan salah satu penyakit penyerta komorbiditas yang dapat mempengaruhi kualitas hidup penderita diabetes. Kualitas hidup merupakan kondisi fungsional lansia yang salah satunya dimensi kesehatan fisik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan penyakit diabetes terhadap kualitas hidup lansia di Kelurahan Pulo Gadung Jakarta Timur. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah lansia di Keluruhan Pulo Gadung Jakarta Timur. Sampel penelitian adalah seluruh lansia yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi pada penelitian. Analisis data yang digunakan yaitu uji chi-square. Berdasarkan hasil analisis univariat didapatkan kualitas hidup buruk sebanyak 82,9% dan komorbiditas diabetes kategori tinggi didapatkan sebanyak 80%. Hasil analisis bivariat menunjukkan adanya hubungan antara penyakit diabetes terhadap kualitas hidup lansia dengan nilai p-value 0,044 dan nilai OR 4,073. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa lansia dengan komorbiditas penyakit diabetes selama masa pandemi covid-19 dapat menurunkan kualitas hidup. Diharapkan untuk keluarga lansia dapat memperhatikan, membantu, dan terus memberi dukungan kepada orang tuanya (lansia).

Abstract

Kanker payudara merupakan jenis kanker dengan angka kejadian dan kematian tertinggi pada wanita di dunia. Salah satu model sel kanker payudara yang banyak digunakan dalam penelitian adalah sel MCF-7 yang bersifat sensitif terhadap estrogen. Protein p53 berperan penting sebagai supresor tumor melalui pengaturan siklus sel dan induksi apoptosis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian ekstrak kayu bajakah merah (Spatholobus littoralis) terhadap kadar protein pro-apoptosis p53 pada sel kanker payudara MCF-7. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental dengan rancangan true-experimental pretest–posttest control group design. Sel MCF-7 dibagi menjadi empat kelompok, yaitu blanko, kontrol negatif, kontrol positif (tamoxifen 4,81 ppm), dan kelompok perlakuan ekstrak kayu bajakah merah dengan konsentrasi IC₅₀ sebesar 116,4 ppm. Sel diinkubasi selama 72 jam pada suhu 37°C dengan 5% CO₂. Kadar protein p53 diukur menggunakan metode ELISA. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak kayu bajakah merah meningkatkan kadar protein p53 secara signifikan dibandingkan kelompok kontrol, meskipun masih lebih rendah dibandingkan tamoxifen. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak kayu bajakah merah berpotensi sebagai agen antikanker melalui aktivasi jalur p53 dan sejalan dengan prinsip pengobatan herbal dalam Islam.

Abstract

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light has negative effects on skin health, including decreased melatonin levels and increased skin cell damage. This study investigated the effects of Moringa oleifera (MO) leaf extract on melatonin levels and skin damage induced by UVB light in male Sprague Dawley rats. Utilizing a post-randomized controlled group design, 28 rats were allocated into four groups: a control group without treatment and a treatment group subjected to UVB exposure alongside MO extract at doses of 300 mg/kg and 600 mg/kg. Melatonin levels were quantitatively assessed via spectrophotometry, while histopathological analysis was employed to evaluate skin damage. Results indicated that rats receiving the 600 mg/kg MO extract exhibited the highest melatonin levels, contrasting sharply with the group exposed solely to UVB radiation, which showed significantly reduced melatonin. Histological examination revealed a marked decrease in sunburn cell lesions in the MO extract-treated group compared to the control group lacking treatment. In conclusion, Moringa oleifera leaf extract appears to enhance melatonin production and mitigate UV-induced skin damage, suggesting its potential as a protective agent in dermatological practices. These findings warrant further exploration into the application of MO extract in developing preventive therapies against UV-related skin damage.

Abstract

Abstrak Salah satu penyakit yang paling umum terjadi pada wanita adalah kanker payudara, yang terkait dengan pembelahan sel yang tidak terkendali melalui jalur sinyal mTORC. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menentukan bagaimana ekstrak Kayu Bajakah Merah (Spatholobus littoralis) mempengaruhi ekspresi protein mTORC secara in vitro pada sel kanker payudara MCF-7. Penelitian menggunakan desain true experimental dengan post-test only control group, melibatkan enam kelompok perlakuan, termasuk kontrol negatif, kontrol positif (Tamoxifen), dan perlakuan ekstrak Bajakah Merah pada konsentrasi IC₅ 72 jam. Sel dikultur, diolah, dan viabilitas sel diukur menggunakan CCK-8 untuk menentukan IC₅, sedangkan kadar protein mTORC dianalisis menggunakan ELISA. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak Bajakah Merah menurunkan viabilitas sel secara dosis- dan waktu-dependen, dengan IC₅ terendah pada inkubasi 72 jam. Kadar mTORC meningkat signifikan pada kelompok perlakuan ekstrak dibanding kontrol negatif, menunjukkan pengaruh ekstrak terhadap jalur pensinyalan mTORC. Meskipun efek sitotoksik masih lebih rendah dibanding Tamoxifen, ekstrak kayu Bajakah Merah memiliki potensi sebagai agen kemopreventif berbasis bahan alam.. Kata Kunci: kanker payudara, MCF-7, ekstrak kayu Bajakah Merah, mTORC, sitotoksik, kemoprevensi. Abstract One of the most prevalent diseases in women is breast cancer, which is linked to unchecked cell division via the mTORC signaling pathway. This study sought to determine how Red Bajakah Wood (Spatholobus littoralis) extract affected the in vitro expression of the mTORC protein in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. A true experimental design with post-test only control group was employed, including six treatment groups: negative control, positive control (Tamoxifen), and Red Bajakah Wood extract at IC₅₀ 72-hour concentration. Cells were cultured, treated, and viability assessed using CCK-8 to determine IC₅₀, while mTORC protein levels were measured via ELISA. Results showed that Red Bajakah Wood extract reduced cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, with the lowest IC₅₀ at 72 hours incubation. mTORC levels increased significantly in extract-treated cells compared to negative control, indicating the extract’s effect on the mTORC signaling pathway. Although its cytotoxicity was lower than Tamoxifen, Red Bajakah Wood extract demonstrated potential as a natural-based chemopreventive agent.. Abstract

Background: Smoking can cause health problems. In elderly smoking has become a habit in continuing the previous habit, even smoking habit tends to simply continue without the accompaniment of strong reasons, and these habits become addictive. Riskesdas research results showed that 65.6% of men smoked in 2007 and other research showed that 67% of men smoked in 2011, the prevalence of smoking continues to increase both men and women. Cigarette smoke can cause oxidative stress which is characterized by increased levels of MDA (malondialdehyde) as a marker of oxidative stress in the cell membrane. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of smoking on salivary MDA levels in smokers aged 45-59 years. Methods: The study was descriptive cross sectional analytic. The primary data used in this study. Determination of the population in the sample using quota sampling. The data obtained were analyzed with SPSS ver24 32bit for windows to see a comparison of MDA levels between smokers and nonsmokers. Results: From the analysis results data obtained in male smokers 0.503 ± 0.108, while nonsmokers 0.190 ± 0.047. Based on the results seen that MDA levels of salivary male smokers are higher than male nonsmokers with p value = 0.001. Conclusion: Increased levels of MDA can be found in smokers with the influence of smoking behavior conducted in men aged 45-59 years. This can be proven by the P value 0.001 that shows these results significantly, where there is a difference between MDA levels in smokers and nonsmokers.

Abstract

This study addresses the growing concern of skin aging associated with glycation processes, particularly the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) such as Carboxymethyllysine (CML), which contribute to oxidative stress and tissue damage. The research aims to evaluate the effect of bajakah wood (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk.) extract on CML levels in D-galactose-induced aging model rats and to examine its relevance from an Islamic perspective. An experimental quantitative design was employed using 36 male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into six groups, including control and treatment groups receiving varying doses of bajakah wood extract. CML levels were measured using the ELISA method after treatment. The results showed that although there were variations in mean CML levels across groups, statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA indicated no significant effect of bajakah wood extract on reducing CML levels (p > 0.05). The positive control group treated with vitamin C exhibited the lowest CML levels, while treatment groups showed fluctuating results. In conclusion, bajakah wood extract demonstrated limited in vivo antiglycation effects under the experimental conditions. However, its bioactive compounds indicate potential for further investigation, particularly with improved dosage, duration, and methodological approaches, while aligning with Islamic principles of halal and beneficial use.

Abstract

Skin aging is a biological process that is influenced by oxidative stress and the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that can increase the activity of the collagenase enzyme so that it causes collagen degradation. Red logan wood (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk.) is known to have antioxidant content that has the potential to inhibit this process. This study aimed to determine the effect of administration of ethanol extract of red logs on collagenase activity in male white rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain induced by D-galactose. This study is a laboratory experimental research with a post-test only control group design. A total of 36 rats were divided into six groups, namely the blank group, negative control, positive control, and three treatment groups given red bajakah wood ethanol extract with doses of 25 mg/kgBB, 50 mg/kgBB, and 100 mg/kgBB. Induction of aging was carried out using D-galactose, then serum collagenase activity was measured using the ELISA method. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test followed by an LSD test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed that the administration of ethanol extract of red logs was able to significantly reduce collagenase activity compared to the negative control group (p < 0.05). Doses of 100 mg/kgBB showed the greatest decreasing effect and were close to positive control groups. This suggests that red logwood extract has the potential to be a natural anti-aging agent through a mechanism of inhibition of collagen activity.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit involving follicular hyperkeratinization, excessive sebum production, Cutibacterium acnes colonization, inflammation, and oxidative stress. The activation of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway and the inflammasome by C. acnes triggers the release of proinflammatory mediators, such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, which contribute to the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, and severe inflammatory lesions. Furthermore, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) plays a role in extracellular matrix degradation, tissue damage, and scarring, while superoxide dismutase (SOD) reflects endogenous antioxidant capacity in response to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS). This review aims to examine the roles of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, MMP-9, and SOD biomarkers in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. The method employed is a narrative review conducted through literature searches across PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. The findings indicate that IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α serve as the primary mediators of acne inflammation. MMP-9 is associated with inflammatory severity, tissue destruction, and scar formation, whereas decreased SOD activity reflects elevated oxidative stress that exacerbates acne lesions. These findings confirm that IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, MMP-9, and SOD are critical biomarkers in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris and possess the potential to be used as parameters for diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic evaluation of the condition.
