Abstract

Fishermen are one of the communities in the waters that need attention from the government in terms of health. Ignoring the safety of fishermen will have an impact on increasing expenditure in the economic sector because there are medical costs that must be borne and also have an effect on the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to increase education related to health and the benefits of working safety equipment for fishermen. This educational activity was carried out by distributing leaflets and outreach to the homes and fishermen's bases of Negeri Hitumessing, Leihittu District, Central Maluku Regency. There were 21 respondents; only 4 fishermen had swimming floats, only around 19%, and only 2 had swimming goggles, or around 10% of the total respondents. Not all fishermen also have fishing boats, or the local people call them babongs. Only about 38% or 7 fishermen own a boat. Only 1 or 5% of the ships have goggles; similarly, only 1 has a life jacket. The results of community service activities are expected so that fishermen can understand occupational health and safety, its impact, and the importance of occupational health and safety.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Academic difficulties and lack of adaptation ability of students to their educational environment are often encountered in the early period of their education, including for those enrolled in medical faculties. The academic difficulties encountered could be reflected in the low academic achievement of students. This study aimed to explore the academic difficulties and adaptation processes of students with low academic achievement (GPA <2.50) in the first two years at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Pattimura (UNPATTI), Ambon. Methods: This study used a qualitative method involving 23 informants from the first and second year at the Faculty of Medicine UNPATTI who had low academic achievement (GPA <2.50). Data were collected from March to April 2022 using Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and in-depth interviews (IDI) techniques. Data analysis was performed using the thematic analysis method based on the research objectives. Results: This study shows that the academic difficulties of first-two-year students with low academic achievement are influenced by several factors, including the transition from school to university, tight scheduling, difficulty in understanding lecture material, and the online lecture system due to the COVID-19 pandemic occurred since 2020. These difficulties were also exacerbated by student attitudes, family influence, and the socio-economic environment. Conclusion: It is necessary to identify students who experience academic difficulties as early as possible. This will help educational institutions assist them, including by strengthening the role of academic supervisors and peer mentors for students in need.

Abstract

Background: Changes in learning methods from teacher-centered to student-centered, in addition to the different subjects taught compared to the high school, could be challenging for new medical students. Biomedical matriculation is carried out for new students to equalize perceptions and knowledge before the first semester starts. This study explored student perceptions about the effectiveness of biomedical matriculation activities at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Pattimura, Ambon. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted with 20 students from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Pattimura who were in their first year of the 2022/2023 academic year. Data were collected using in-depth interviews. Results: The results showed that many students at the beginning of the intake needed to be made aware of biomedical matriculation. Consequently, this adversely impacts the informants' readiness to participate in the program. Students admitted that they began to adapt as the learning activities progressed in matriculation. The informants also agreed that biomedical matriculation was effective in helping them during their first year. It provided new knowledge regarding the subjects studied and helped them adapt to the learning methods of the faculty and in their preparation for class later. Conclusion: Most informants mentioned that the supporting components in biomedical matriculation, such as the material taught, lecturers as well as infrastructure also supported them in their adaption to the new academic life at the faculty.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a nutritional issue that poses a threat to adolescents in Indonesia, particularly to adolescent girls. According to the 2018 Basic Health Survey (Riskesdas), the proportion of CED among adolescent girls in Indonesia was 36.3%. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with CED among adolescent girls in the catchment area of Poka-Rumah Tiga, Ambon City. The study was conducted in August 2022 and used a cross-sectional approach with total sampling. The respondents were students aged 15-19 years from three high schools/equivalents in the catchment area of Poka-Rumah Tiga Health Center (SMKN 5 Ambon, SMAN 3 Ambon, and MA Al-Mabrur), with a total of 441 respondents. CED was determined based on the mid-upper arm circumference size being less than 23.5 cm. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with CED in adolescent girls. Of the 441 adolescent girls who participated in this study, 45.80% were found to have CED. The odds of CED were lower in adolescent girls with normal BMI (18.5-22.9 kg/m2) (OR=0.09; 95%CI: 0.05-0.15; p less than 0.001) and overweight (≥23 kg/m2) (OR=0.01; 95%CI: 0.00-0.07; p less than 0.001) compared to those who were underweight (BMI less than 18.5 kg/m2). This study highlights the importance of conducting nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions for adolescent girls. This includes raising the awareness and knowledge of adolescent girls, family members, and school teachers regarding the importance of balanced nutrition to reduce CED.
