Abstract

In the digital era, the media industry has undergone a significant shift due to cultural capitalism that makes content the main commodity. Algorithms and economic interests dominate the distribution of information, prioritizing profit over social value. This research aims to analyze the phenomenon of cultural capitalism in the digital media industry and understand the mechanism behind the process and impact of commodification of content and social values on society. This study uses qualitative analysis, with content analysis and critical analysis methods and uses the theory of Antonio Gramsci's Hegemony Theory (1971), Dallas W. Smythe's Commodification Theory (1977) and Christian Fuchs' Information Economy Theory (2014). Meanwhile, the media's political economy approach in the framework of a critical paradigm is also used which allows for an in- depth analysis of the power structure in the media industry. The results show that cultural capitalism in the digital media industry reflects how audience attention and data are commodified by digital platforms for economic gain, with algorithms that direct content consumption to increase engagement and profits. The commodification of content in the digital media industry has shifted social and cultural values into commodities controlled by economic mechanisms, especially through viral trends and phenomena. Digital platform algorithms are increasingly driving the creation of entertainment- and monetization-oriented content, often obscuring the true meaning and quality of the message. The development of the digital media industry has changed people's media consumption patterns to be more flexible and personalized, replacing the dominance of traditional media with algorithm-based digital platforms. However, this change also brings challenges, such as filter bubbles that narrow the diversity of information and shift the role of the audience from passive recipients to active producers in the digital media ecosystem. In conclusion, cultural capitalism in the digital media industry has encouraged the commodification of content, where social and cultural values are often sacrificed for popularity and profit. Digital platform algorithms are further amplifying this trend, leading to the dominance of viral and sensational content and setting aside more weighty content. As a result, media consumption patterns shift in a more personal direction, but it also risks creating filter bubbles that narrow the diversity of information. The implication is that it is hoped that a balance between economic interests and social values in the media industry in the digital era will be created, in order to prevent the dominance of algorithms that lead to excessive commodification and narrowing of information diversity.

Abstract

The development of the digital media industry has changed the work landscape for media workers, including in the podcast ecosystem. Deddy Corbuzier's podcast as one of the largest podcasts in Indonesia represents this change, where individuals can become independent producers with great influence. However, digital capitalism creates flexible working conditions but is also vulnerable to exploitation, including wage inequality, high work flexibility, and lack of labor protection. Additionally, controversies in podcast content are often used as a capitalization strategy to increase exposure and profits. This research aims to analyze political economic inequality in the digital media industry through a case study of Deddy Corbuzier's Podcast. Using qualitative methods and communication political economy approaches based on Karl Marx's critical theory, this study examines how digital capitalism shapes the working conditions of media workers and the resulting socio-economic impacts. Data was obtained through case studies, literature reviews, and analysis of YouTube content. The results show that although the digitalization of media opens up new opportunities, the benefits remain concentrated on channel and platform owners, while media workers face job uncertainty. Therefore, fairer regulations are needed to protect media workers and minimize exploitation in the digital economy.

Abstract

Controlling style communication style is a communication approach characterized by dominance in decision-making, one-way communication, and minimal space for employees to be actively involved in the work process. Leaders who use this style tend to impose their views without considering input from employees. In the context of an organization, this communication style can create negative perceptions among employees, especially if employees feel that the decisions made do not consider real conditions in the field. This study aims to analyze the application of controlling style communication style in an organization called CV Anugrah Win Sejahtera, using Fritz Heider's Attribution Theory. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and direct observation of employees and leaders in the company. Attribution theory is used to understand how employees interpret or assess the leader's communication style. The results of the study show that the controlling style communication style by leaders gives rise to employee perceptions that the decisions taken are authoritarian and do not pay attention to the reality they face. Employees feel less appreciated, not involved in decision-making, and lose motivation. This has an impact on less harmonious working relationships and reduces the level of employee emotional participation in the company. Based on attribution theory, employees tend to attribute the leader's communication style as a form of overly dominant control, which causes feelings of frustration and a lack of belonging to the company.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the duality of the structure carried out by MNC Group through Okezone.com in news related to the Broadcasting Bill. The delay in the ratification of the Broadcasting Law No. 32 of 2002 is the background for the dominance of media discourse by MNC Group which fights for a Multi Mux or Hybrid Mux system that is more beneficial to them than the government-supported Single Mux model. This research uses a critical paradigm with a qualitative approach based on Anthony Giddens' structural theory and Teun A. van Dijk's critical discourse analysis. The results of the study show that 12 news articles in Okezone.com throughout 2017–2018 reflect the dominance of MNC Group in building public opinion to support the Multi Mux system. The duality of structures is seen in three dimensions: significance, dominance, and legitimacy, which systematically intervene in the public space. This research highlights that economic-political motives are the main drivers, where the power of the media is used to marginalize the public interest for the benefit of certain groups. This study concludes that the power of the media supported by the socio-political structure has the potential to threaten the balance of information and democracy in the Indonesian broadcasting ecosystem.

Abstract

As a result of developments in technology and information, the way individuals communicate has changed. This is also the case with the SMAN 3 Bandung Class of '82 Alumni Association, which uses a WhatsApp group (WAG) as a platform to gather and exchange information. However, there is a problem, namely that the dynamics of communication within the ikasma3badg82 WAG cannot always be conveyed in their entirety. The researcher argues that dishonesty in conveying messages within the WAG is part of an effort to maintain solidarity among group members. The objectives of this study include (1) to determine the message production process within the ikasma3bdg82 WAG and (2) to determine how the message production process within the ikasma3bdg'82 WAG is related to the characteristics of its members. The research methodology uses a constructivist paradigm and a qualitative approach. The results of the study include (1) The message production process carried out by members of the ikasma3bdg82 WAG, between passive and active members, is fairly balanced. (2) Based on Trait Theory, members of the ikasma3bdg82 WAG can be classified into Conversational Narcissism, Argumentativeness, and Social Communication Anxiety. The uniqueness of this study is the emergence of the Super Conversational Narcissism component, which is a development of Littlejohn's Trait Theory.

Abstract

Propaganda is a powerful tool for shaping public perception, especially in the context of fascism. This study analyzes the application of Freudian theory to fascist propaganda in Indonesia, particularly during the New Order era under Soeharto’s regime. Fascism in Indonesia began in 1933 with the rise of organizations like the Nederlandsche Indische Fascisten Organisatie (NIFO) and the Indonesian Fascist Party (PFI). During the New Order, propaganda was used to manipulate public opinion, suppress opposition, and maintain power. This research employs a qualitative literature review method, analyzing historical records, media sources, and academic writings. The study specifically examines how Freudian concepts, such as unconscious fears and mass psychology, were used to influence public perceptions, particularly in relation to the G30S/PKI case. The findings reveal that the regime exploited public fears of communism, using propaganda to justify repression and control. This research highlights the importance of understanding the psychological underpinnings of propaganda and suggests that further studies could explore the broader implications of these techniques in different political contexts.

Abstract

The high intensity of formal communication, Laong Pantar communication between village political elites, the community results in a decrease in trust. A high level of uncertainty in a relationship causes a decrease in the level of intimacy of the communication content, resulting in a high level of reciprocity (feedback). (West & Turner: 2013: 150). Someone feels uncomfortable in a relationship because they feel they are not part of the group members Gudykunts and Kim (2003). Trying to find a way out to develop a new concept or communication model. How to apply the Laong Pantar model in the implementation of village government in Sumbawa district. What are the motives for understanding and disagreement within the village political elite and the community regarding the discourse of implementing Laong Pantar. Which is more dominant between santripetal motives and santrifugal motives within the political elite and the community regarding the discourse of implementing Laong Pantar in the implementation of village government. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, natural observation, Data collection uses observation, in-depth interviews, structured interviews and documentation. The results of the study show that the Laong Pantar implementation model desired by the political elite and the community is the elaborative final communication model. The motives for disagreement among political elites are habitual or accustomed to formal communication. This is due to a decline in trust in one's own culture, along with increased workload and political motives.
