Abstract

Ecological values in textbooks are essential because they help instill environmental awareness and responsibility in students from an early age to support sustainable development. The study addresses how ecological values are portrayed in Indonesian 12th-grade English textbooks. Using a qualitative content analysis framework, this study examines the transitivity system found in the textbook. The analysis emphasizes environmental conservation, sustainable practices, and encouraging cognitive engagement through positively framed language and relatable, contextual examples.  Through a thorough exploration of how elements are connected, positive language use, and specific contextual details, the research provides nuanced insights into the representation of ecological values. This research provides valuable insights into the nuanced instructional approach that shapes environmental awareness within the context of these textbooks. These findings suggest that English Language Teaching (ELT) materials for Indonesian students should actively incorporate eco-friendly linguistic elements and emphasize sustainability-oriented pedagogy to cultivate environmental responsibility.

Abstract

This study aimed to address two research questions concerning the frequency of illocution-related speech acts in connection with cyberbullying on Instagram. Data were collected from 100 comments on four Instagram accounts, and the analysis was done using the speech acts approach. The findings revealed that the speech act most frequently used in connection with cyberbullying on Instagram is the declarative type. Declarative speech acts are employed to create new names and terms, make official announcements, and follow ceremonial events. However, when used in the context of cyberbullying, these speech acts can have a detrimental impact on the victims. The study highlights the growing prevalence of cyberbullying on social media platforms like Instagram and its negative effects on victims. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding speech acts in the context of cyberbullying to improve communication and create a safer online environment.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of ecological literacy in online news coverage of plastic waste reduction campaigns published by The Jakarta Post. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, the study analyzed twelve English-language online news articles to identify how ecological literacy elements are embedded in environmental reporting. The analysis was guided by an ecological literacy framework focusing on five key dimensions: Ecological Knowledge, Environmental Awareness, Affective Engagement, Responsible Behavior, and Systematic Thinking. The findings indicate that ecological knowledge and environmental awareness are the most dominant dimensions, reflected through scientific explanations, problem-oriented narratives, and factual descriptions of the impacts of plastic waste. Meanwhile, affective engagement and systematic thinking appear less frequently due to the news' structural characteristics that prioritize objectivity and concise information. Responsible behavior is represented through descriptions of concrete environmental actions and sustainability initiatives. Overall, this study shows that online news serves not only as a source of information but also as an informal educational medium that contributes to increasing ecological literacy and environmental awareness. These findings highlight the important role of online journalism in supporting sustainability discourse and plastic waste reduction efforts in Indonesia.Analysis of Eco-Literacy in Online News Coverage of Plastic Waste Reduction Campaigns

Abstract

The Penglipuran Traditional Village in Bali has a bamboo forest of approximately 45 hectares that is managed through the customary system (awig-awig), serving as a source of economic, ecological, and spiritual value for the community. This study aims to analyze the utilization of the natural power of the bamboo forest as an agent of change while shaping a new branding of ecological tourism in Bali. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with primary data collected through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews, as well as secondary data from literature, articles, and relevant journals. The results show that the management of the bamboo forest through local wisdom creates a unique tourism identity, integrating ecological, socio-cultural, and economic aspects, while strengthening the community’s role as the main actor in environmental preservation. The bamboo forest becomes an educational tourism attraction through activities such as trekking, bamboo handicraft workshops, and participation in traditional ceremonies, while also maintaining ecosystem balance, disaster mitigation, and groundwater conservation. This new branding emphasizes authenticity and sustainability, making Penglipuran a model of ecological tourism capable of attracting both domestic and international tourists. In conclusion, the new branding of Penglipuran Bamboo Forest emphasizes the integration of nature conservation, cultural preservation, environmental education, and local economic empowerment through the utilization of bamboo in traditions, crafts, creative industries, and a bamboo laboratory, thereby positioning Penglipuran as a sustainable ecotourism destination that is authentic, educational, and globally valuable.
