Abstract

Introduction: Students, especially at the senior high school level, are increasingly required to be able to develop according to predetermined standards. When the duration of learning increases, unconsciously, the duration of using the eyes also increases while the sleep duration decreases. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the correlation between short duration of sleep and decreased visual acuity among senior high school students. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted, in which the students filled out questionnaires and underwent visual examination. The population was all final-year students at one of Sidoarjo Senior High School in East Java, with the age range of 16-18 years. Two variables involved in this study were sleep duration and visual acuity of the left and right eye. The data will be analyzed using Spearman Rho correlation analysis to determine the cause and effect of the two variables studied. Results: The sample according to the gender was 45.5% male and 54.5% female. The sample according to the age range was 76.1% in 17 years old and 23.9 % in 18 years old. The correlation test results were 0.277 and 0.009 for the correlation coefficient and the significance value for the right eye. The results were 0.234 for the correlation coefficient and 0.028 for the significance value for the left eye. There was a significant correlation between sleep duration and the visual acuity reduction. Conclusions: This study reveals that less sleep duration of the final year students between 16-18 years old range may be associated with reduced visual acuity among students.

Abstract

Brokoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica) mengandung flavonoid dan fenol tingkat tinggi, yang merupakan antioksidan alami yang kuat. Senyawa-senyawa ini dapat berfungsi sebagai hepatoprotektor, mencegah kerusakan hati yang disebabkan oleh dosis obat yang toksik. Deksametason, bila diberikan dalam dosis tinggi, dapat menyebabkan cedera hati. Aktivitas enzim hati seperti SGOT dan katalase dapat bertindak sebagai biomarker untuk kerusakan hati. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menilai efek hepatoprotektif ekstrak brokoli dengan menganalisis aktivitas enzim hati pada tikus putih jantan (Rattus norvegicus) yang terpapar deksametason dosis tinggi. Penelitian ini mengikuti Desain Eksperimental dengan kelompok kontrol pasca-uji saja. Sebanyak 30 tikus Wistar jantan yang sehat, berusia 9-12 minggu dan berat 150-200g, secara acak dimasukkan ke dalam tiga kelompok. Kelompok kontrol negatif tidak menerima pengobatan, sedangkan kelompok kontrol positif diberi deksametason dari hari ke-15 hingga hari ke-24. Kelompok perlakuan menerima ekstrak brokoli dari hari ke-8 hingga hari ke-14, diikuti oleh deksametason dari hari ke-15 hingga hari ke-24. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak brokoli memengaruhi kadar SGOT pada tikus yang diobati dengan deksametason dosis tinggi. Namun, tidak ada efek signifikan ekstrak brokoli terhadap kadar katalase pada tikus yang diinduksi deksametason.

Abstract

Introduction: Refractive error is one of the most prevalent visual impairments worldwide. During the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, prolonged school closures and social restrictions, forcing adolescents to a sharp increase in digital screen use, created ideal conditions for the progression of refractive errors. Purpose: To evaluate and compare the prevalence of refractive errors among adolescents aged 17–20 years before the pandemic, in contrast to during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed the medical records of 77 adolescents aged 17–20 years who underwent visual acuity examinations at RSPAL dr. Ramelan, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, between 2019 and 2025 under purposive sampling. Screen time data were collected through structured questionnaires and categorized by daily duration. Visual acuity was recorded as the average of both eyes in decimal form. Statistical analyses were performed to compare visual acuity before, during, and after the pandemic. Results: A Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a significant decrease in visual acuity between the pre-pandemic and during or post-pandemic periods (Z = –7.117, p < 0.001). Among the 77 adolescents analyzed, 87.0% (n = 67) experienced a decline in visual acuity, while 13.0% (n = 10) showed no change. The majority reported daily screen time of 2–4 hours (42.9%) or more than four hours (39.0%). Conclusions: Significant reductions in visual acuity were observed during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a mean decline from 0.52 to 0.39. These findings highlight the potential long-term impact of pandemic-related lifestyle changes on adolescent vision and support the need for preventive strategies to protect visual health in the digital era.
