Abstract

Short nutritional status or stunting is the condition of a person's height being less than normal based on age and gender. Height is a type of anthropometric examination and indicates poor nutritional status (malnutrition) over a long/chronic period of time. In developing the quality of human resources, the problem of stunting, which is one part of double burden malnutrition (DBM), has a very detrimental impact both in terms of health and in terms of economic productivity and in the short and long term. Malnutrition during this critical period can cause stunting and abnormal tooth growth and development and refers to enamel hypoplasia so that teeth are more susceptible to demineralization and caries. This study aims to determine the relationship between stunting and dental caries (def-t) in preschool children in Gunung Village. This research used a survey method with a cross-sectional approach which was carried out at the Posyandu, Gunung Sulah Village. Research sample of children 3 - 5 years old in Gunung Sulah Village who went to Posyandu. The instruments for this research were a recap sheet for dental caries examinations at Posyandu and a recap sheet of nutritional status/visit of toddlers to Posyandu. The data obtained was then analyzed by calculating the data frequency using the SPSS program. The research results showed that the prevalence of stunting was 9 people in the very short category (4.1%), 79 people in the short category (35.6%). The prevalence of dental caries is in the low category with 125 respondents (83.33%), the medium category with 22 respondents (14.66%) and the high category with 3 respondents (2%). Analysis of the relationship between stunting and dental caries (def-t) using Chi Square obtained a p - value = 0.000 (p - value < 0.05), so that statistically there is a relationship between short nutritional status (stunting) and dental caries (dmf-t ) in preschool children in Gunung Sulah Village, Way Halim District, Bandar Lampung City.

Abstract

Nutritional status is a requirement to determine whether a person is in a healthy state which is influenced by several factors, namely diet and adequacy of nutrients to carry out a normal metabolism. Some nutrients that can affect the growth and development of tooth eruption time include the large intake of vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, and flour in the body. Deficiencies in nutrients can inhibit the process of tooth growth and development and slow down the time of tooth eruption. Tooth eruption is the process of moving teeth from the jawbone towards the oral cavity. Tooth eruption can be influenced by several factors, one of which is the nutritional status which is the state of the body as a result of food consumption and the use of nutrients. The purpose of this study was to elaborate on the relationship of nutritional status with permanent tooth eruptions in children of primary school age (6-12 years). Abstract

Elementary school age is an ideal time to increase knowledge in the field of dental and oral health such as promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative. Promotive and preventive efforts are basic efforts in health services which aim to improve health status and prevent the occurrence of disease, in this case dental and oral disease in children. Minimal forms of activities that can be carried out routinely in the school environment include dental health education/DHE (dental health education), mass tooth brushing, including applying fluoride to teeth. Fluorine has a mechanism of action as an anticaries, namely inhibiting demineralization, increasing remineralization, and inhibiting bacterial glycolysis. The aim of this community service activity is to prevent dental caries by brushing teeth correctly and applying topical fluoride applications to elementary school students who are susceptible to caries to prevent dental caries (caries prevention). Methods for implementing this activity include problem identification, problem solving plans, implementation of activities. This activity was carried out in January 2025 at UPT SPF SD Negeri Minasa Upa, Makassar City. Before administering fluoride, education is first provided regarding dental health with material on caries and the benefits of fluorine for dental health. After that, fluoride was given to 35 grade 6 elementary school students. The results obtained by the number of DMF-T in students were included in the good category (2.3), and the OHI-S examination results obtained a good score (1.4). Dental health education by prioritizing tooth brushing techniques and the use of fluoride toothpaste, healthy behavior and avoiding unhealthy eating habits and carrying out regular dental examinations.
