Abstract

Maintaining a person's dental and oral health can avoid caries and periodontal disease. Plaque is a layer formed from food residue that sticks to the teeth that reacts with saliva, bacteria, enzymes, and sticky acids containing bacteria that form on the surface of the teeth and plaque occurs when eating foods containing carbohydrates, soft drinks, cakes or candy and remaining on the teeth. Chewing strawberries has many advantages, including, first mechanically, when chewing strawberries there is friction between the tooth surface and the fibers contained in strawberries so that it can remove plaque on the tooth surface. Objective To determine the effectiveness of consuming strawberries in inhibiting plaque formation in boarding house children at Pondok Putri 1, Hartaco Jaya Complex. Research Method This study used quantitative research, with a sample of 14 people using humans in the affordable population as samples, namely the before and after groups. The results of the study from the research data can be seen that consuming fruit after every meal, the plaque score formed was 0.58, while the plaque score for those who did not consume strawberries was 0.62. Based on table 3, the average plaque index before consuming strawberries was 3.08 and the average plaque index after consuming strawberries was 0.58. The difference between the average plaque index before and after consuming strawberries was 2.37. The results showed that the plaque index decreased after consuming strawberries. While those who did not consume strawberries had an average plaque index before of 1.50 and an average plaque index after of 0.62. The difference between the average plaque index before and after.

Abstract

Elementary school students are one of the groups that are vulnerable to dental and oral diseases, especially dental caries because in general students still have less knowledge and behavior to improve the quality of their dental and oral health. Brushing teeth properly is an important factor in maintaining dental and oral health. The success of maintaining dental and oral health is also influenced by the pattern of brushing teeth. One effective way to improve students' knowledge and behavior about health is to use the molegi game (Monopoly of Dental Health) to promote health in schools. The purpose of community service is to measure the level of knowledge of how to brush teeth properly in children. The type of research used in this community service is a pre-experiment with a one group pre-test post-test design, namely an experimental study without a control group, in other words there is only one group that will fill out the questionnaire before and after counseling to 28 4th grade elementary school students using molegi media. When the pre-test evaluation was carried out regarding the material to be presented, it was seen that the level of understanding and knowledge of students at the UPT SPF SD Inpres Baddoka before the counseling was in the sufficient category of 19 people (67.8%) and the good category of 9 people (32.2%). The level of student knowledge after counseling is generally the same as before counseling. However, looking at the percentage of students' knowledge level, the sufficient category decreased from 19 people (67.8%) to 8 people (28.6%) and the good category increased from 9 people (32.2%) before counseling and increased to 20 people (71.4%) after counseling activities. It can be concluded that there is an increase in knowledge after being given counseling using molegi media.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral health in early childhood is strongly influenced by maternal behavior, knowledge, and daily caregiving practices. Mothers play a crucial role in shaping healthy oral hygiene habits, promoting proper toothbrushing techniques, and preventing dental problems such as cavities. In many rural areas, limited access to dental health information and services increases the risk of poor oral health among children under the age of five. This study aimed to describe the role of mothers in maintaining oral health among young children in Guali Village. Methods: This descriptive study employed a cross-sectional approach involving mothers of children under five years of age residing in Guali Village. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that assessed maternal knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to oral hygiene. Variables included toothbrushing routines, supervision patterns, dietary habits, and access to oral health services. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the findings. Results: The study revealed that although most mothers recognized the importance of maintaining their children’s oral health, there were gaps in their daily practices. A considerable number of mothers reported inconsistent toothbrushing routines, limited supervision, and inadequate knowledge about proper brushing techniques. Sugary snacks and bottle-feeding habits were also commonly reported, contributing to an increased risk of early childhood caries. Additionally, access to regular dental check-ups remained low due to distance and lack of awareness. Conclusion: The findings suggest that while mothers recognize the general importance of oral hygiene, their actual practices remain suboptimal. Strengthening maternal education and improving access to dental health services are crucial for enhancing early childhood oral health in Guali Village. Community-based interventions are recommended to support sustainable behavior change
