Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in learning to write argumentative essays. This study employs a quantitative approach with a one group pre-test post-test design. The subjects of the research are all students of class XI at SMA Nurul Iman NW Tammimi Lombok Tengah, totaling 20 people. Data collection techniques include tests, observations, and documentation. The statistical test used to test the hypothesis is the t-test. The analysis results show that the t-count value (3.257) is greater than the t-table value (1.729), which means there is a significant difference between the results of the pre-test and post-test. Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, namely that there is a significant influence of the PBL model on students' argumentative essay writing skills. In conclusion, (1) the PBL model is effective for teaching argumentative essay writing, and (2) this model is more capable of improving student learning outcomes compared to conventional methods.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the speaking learning process and identify the obstacles faced by students in speaking lessons in the ninth grade. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach, involving 20 students as research subjects. This study employs a descriptive method. The data sources for this research consist of interview results, observations, and written archives. The informants include teachers, school principals, and students. Data validity testing was carried out using source triangulation, method triangulation, and informant review. Data analysis was conducted using an interactive analysis model. The research results indicate that speaking lessons are still teacher-centered, with monotonous and less varied methods, leading to low student participation. Students tend to feel shy and lack confidence when asked to speak in front of the class. The challenges faced include a lack of engaging learning media, as well as internal and external factors that affect students' speaking abilities. This research provides recommendations to improve students' speaking skills through more interactive and creative learning methods, as well as support from the family and school environment.
