Abstract

Processing End Life Tire (ELT) rubber powder into activated carbon is an alternative for handling tire waste. One way to improve physical properties such as proximate characteristics, surface area and pore diameter of activated carbon is through chemical activation assisted by ultrasonic irradiation. This research aims to determine the effect of ultrasonic irradiation time with potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation on the quality of ELT rubber activated carbon. Activated carbon was synthesized and activated using 30% KOH at various ultrasonic irradiation times, namely 0 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 60 minutes. Based on the characterization results, activated carbon with an ultrasonic irradiation time of 30 minutes is the active carbon that has the most superior properties. The proximate characteristics of activated carbon meet the active carbon quality requirements of SNI 06–3730–1995 and have the highest surface area, namely 401.11 m2/g and pore diameter of 2.1652 nm, which is included in the mesoporous structure category so that it has the potential to be applied as an adsorbent for heavy metals from contaminated fluid.

Abstract

This thorough analysis explores the situation of environmental education in Indonesia, looking at its historical development, present frameworks, and notable efforts. Effective environmental education is essential given the great variety and various ecosystems of Indonesia. Indonesia, the fourth most populated nation in the world, has environmental problems because of heavy resource exploitation, industrialization, and fast urbanization. There is an urgent need for strong environmental education since society needs to be raised with the information and abilities to actively support sustainable activities. This article tracks the development of Indonesia's environmental education policies, looking at their historical foundations and how they were incorporated into the country's formal educational system, including curriculum designs and instructional strategies. In addition to traditional schooling, the analysis highlights the roles played in raising environmental awareness by NGOs, neighborhood-based projects, and government cooperation. The review attempts to determine areas for improvement and evaluate the efficacy of current procedures by evaluating different approaches. Formulating ideas to improve environmental literacy and foster a more environmentally conscious society in Indonesia requires an understanding of the country's current strengths and weaknesses. This review contributes significantly to the current discussion on environmental education by highlighting the critical role that it plays in promoting a sustainable future for everyone, not just in Indonesia but also on a larger global scale.

Abstract

Melaksanakan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat bagi tenaga pengajar merupakan salah satu upaya untuk melaksanakan tugas sebagai pelaksanaan tridarma perguruan tinggi. Selain itu, dalam bidang teknologi, energi yang terbarukan mempunyai peran yang sangat penting dalam memenuhi kebutuhan energi. Salah satunya ialah energi listrik yang menjadi energi vital dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Pada saat ini, penggunaan lampu didukung dengan tersedianya berbagai lampu hemat energi di mana terdapat sistem pada lampu tersebut akan mengkonversikan cahaya matahari menjadi tenaga listrik. Dari teknologi di atas, telah dilakukan kegiatan pengabdian di salah satu pemukiman warga di Giwangan, Yogyakarta, yaitu aplikasi lampu penerangan untuk jalan taman di Giwangan Yogyakarta berbasis solar panel. Tujuan pengabdian ini adalah memberikan bekal pengetahuan kepada masyarakat mengenai sistem lampu penerangan menggunakan tenaga surya. Pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan beberapa tahap seperti sosialisasi energi terbarukan dan teknologi penerangan jalan, konsultasi area pemasangan lampu, pemasangan lampu bertenaga surya, dan peninjauan kembali apakah telah bisa digunakan sesuai yang diharapkan. Kegiatan pengabdian aplikasi lampu solar sel telah selesai dilakukan sesuai metode yang dipaparkan

Abstract

Sabun cair merupakan kebutuhan rumah tangga yang digunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari seperti mencuci tangan dan mencuci peralatan dapur. Di samping itu sabun cair dapat dibuat dari minyak goreng bekas, sedangkan minyak goreng bekas jika dibuang ke lingkungan secara langsung akan mencemari lingkungan. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan agar para akademisi dapat turut serta untuk meningkatkan perekonomian rumah tangga melalui pembuatan sabun cair dari minyak goreng bekas. Metode kegiatan ini antara lain dengan memberikan materi, diskusi, pelatihan, dan analisis kelayakan usaha oleh 4 instruktur kepada 30 peserta. Hasil kegiatan ini berupa pengetahuan dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam melakukan pembuatan sabun cair dari minyak goreng bekas serta analisis ekonominya. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan nilai keterserapan materi yang disampaikan dari 47,78 menjadi 94,17. Analisis aspek ekonomi menunjukkan bahwa harga jual yang ditawarkan untuk 1 botol sabun cair yaitu Rp 5000 pada saat promosi dan Rp 6000 pada keadaan normal dengan margin keuntungan sebesar 30 %. Usaha pembuatan sabun cuci ini harus menjual 128 buah botol sabun 250 ml untuk mendapat titik impas.

Abstract

Bank sampah merupakan suatu sarana untuk melakukan pemilahan dan pengumpulan sampah yang dapat didaur ulang dan digunakan kembali. Bank sampah mempunyai peran yang sangat penting untuk mengelola sampah sehingga sampah tidak hanya berakhir di Tempat Pembuangan Akhir (TPA). Selain itu, terbatasnya Tempat Pembuangan Akhir Piyungan Yogyakarta membuat masyarakat harus menangani sampah secara mandiri di wilayah masing-masing. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk mengurangi timbulan sampah anorganik rumah tangga melalui peran bank sampah Larahan Migunani di Dusun Sidorejo, Desa Ngestiharjo. Metode kegiatan ini antara lain melaksanakan sosialisasi dan pelatihan tata cara pelaksanaan kegiatan bank sampah, kegiatan penimbangan, pencatatan sampah dari masyarakat, dan analisis jumlah sampah yang terkumpul di bank sampah. Hasil kegiatan ini yaitu terjadi peningkatan jumlah nasabah dari sejumlah 17 nasabah menjadi 30 nasabah. Jumlah sampah yang terkumpul sebesar 1360 kg selama 8 bulan dari awal pendirian bank sampah, dengan kategori sampah paling banyak terkumpul yaitu sampah kertas dan sampah plastik. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan partisipasi aktif masyarakat dalam mengelola sampah secara mandiri, agar sampah yang dihasilkan tidak menjadi beban bagi lingkungan, sehingga tercipta lingkungan yang bersih dan sehat. Selain itu melalui peran bank sampah, masyarakat dapat memperoleh pendapatan dari penjualan sampah yang dikumpulkan.

Abstract

Plastics are widely used in various aspects of life due to their variety of superior properties. However, they contribute a negative impact on the environment, which leads to the search for an alternative solution such as the production of bioplastics as biodegradable plastics. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the psycho-mechanic quality of bioplastic from glutinous rice starch reinforced with bamboo leaf powder. The bioplastic synthesis process was carried out using 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7% (w/w) variations of bamboo leaf powder on glutinous rice starch, respectively. The results showed that the best bioplastic composition was the addition of 3% (w/w) bamboo leaf powder to glutinous rice starch. This indicated that the addition of bamboo leaf powder in bioplastics can enhance the thickness, hardness, and tensile strength significantly. Meanwhile, the value of density, water vapor transmission rate, and elongation showed a slight increase, and the bioplastic also degraded more than 70% for 7 days.

Abstract

The presence of heavy metal Cr(VI) in water indicates environmental pollution. Heavy metal Cr(VI) that exceeds the standard can be harmful to health because it is toxic and carcinogenic. Activated carbon can be used as a heavy metal adsorbent. Modification of activated carbon using nitric acid can increase metal adsorption capacity. Therefore, this study aims to determine the kinetic of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal by corn cob-based activated carbon modified with nitric acid. The modified activated carbon was characterized by Boehm titration and FTIR spectrophotometer. The adsorption capacity was identified in various parameters, involving the initial concentration of Cr(VI), pH value, contact time, and concentration of the adsorbent to obtain the optimal Cr(VI) removal efficiency value. The most optimal Cr(VI) adsorption was obtained at an activated carbon dosage of 3 g/L, pH value of 1, contact time of 140 minutes, and 100 mg/l Cr(VI) concentration. Based on adsorption kinetics data, the pseudo-second-order equation was obtained (R2 =0.994). The adsorption phenomenon followed the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.998) with an optimum adsorption capacity of 28.32 mg/g. Corn cob-activated carbon modified with nitric acid has many acidic groups that act as effective active sites for reducing Cr(VI) from water.

Abstract

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation significantly alters the chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP), leading to degradation and reduced material performance. This study aims to investigate the effect of exposure length to UV on the chemical properties (functional and thermal) and mechanical properties (tensile strength) of PP. Specimens were subjected to UV exposure for 0 (control), 125, 175, 225, 275, 325, 375, and 625 days. FTIR analysis indicates UV exposure chemically degrades polypropylene (PP) by generating new oxygenated groups (–OH and C=O at 3368 cm⁻¹ and 1586 cm⁻¹) and damaging its main molecular structure (C-H at 2949 cm⁻¹, 2867 cm⁻¹, and 841 cm⁻¹). Prolonged UV exposure alters the thermal properties of polypropylene (PP), as indicated by DSC analysis, which shows broadening and shifting of the melting peak (175–180 °C) due to crystallinity changes and increased oxidation. The mechanical properties also deteriorate, with a critical reduction in tensile strength, particularly between 225 and 375 days, indicating an accelerated degradation phase. After 625 days, tensile strength declines by approximately 59%, confirming the substantial impact of extended UV exposure on PP’s durability.

Abstract

Keberadaan sampah merupakan suatu hal yang mempunyai banyak dampak negatif pada manusia dan lingkungan sekitar, khususnya sampah plastik yang merupakan material yang sulit terurai di alam. Bank Sampah Sidomulyo Maju merupakan bank sampah yang terletak di Desa Sidomulyo, Bambanglipuro, Bantul. Berdasarkan informasi yang di peroleh dari website dan perangkat desa Sidomulyo, kegiatan yang saat ini berjalan di bank sampah Sidomulyo Maju adalah aktivitas pengumpulan dan pemilahan jenis sampah komunal yang dihasilkan oleh masyarakat setempat. Selaras dengan Program yang dicanangkan oleh Pemerintah Bantul “Bantul Bebas Sampah 2025” dan Program Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, diberikan Pelatihan Pembuatan Minyak Pirolisis dari Sampah Plastik kepada masyarakat dan anggota Bank Sampah Sidomulyo Maju di Desa Sidomulyo, Bambanglipuro, Bantul. Pelatihan yang dilakukan diharapkan dengan semangat pengabdian yang disusun oleh Perguruan Tinggi, yakni mengharapkan terjadinya transfer ilmu dan kemanfaatan dari civitas akademika kepada masyarakat luas.
