Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Celery (Apium graveolens L.) is a member of the Apiaceae family that can grow everywhere. Celery contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, essential oils, apigenin, choline, vitamins A, B, C, asparagine bitter substances. Celery contains flavonoids, saponins, and tannins which are antibacterial compounds. Streptococcus mutans is a Gram-positive bacterium creating an acidic atmosphere in the oral cavity, which causes insufficient saliva to prevent enamel demineralisation which can lead to dental caries. The purpose of this study was to analyze the inhibition effect of celery leaf extract (Apium graveolens L.) on the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Methods: This   type   of experimental laboratory research uses the Post Test Only Control Group Design. The samples were Apium graveolens L. and Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175. The number of treatment groups was 24 with concentrations of 20, 40, 60, and 80%. Toothpaste containing antibacterial ingredients was used as positive control and for negative control, a basic toothpaste formula without antibacterial ingredients, namely carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), xylitol, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), sorbitol, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), natrium benzoate. Data analysis using one-way ANOVA test with normality test using Shapiro-Wilk and homogeneity test using Levene test. The results at a concentration of 20, 40, 60 and 80% with a positive control there was no significant difference because the sig value was >0.05. Results: The results showed that Celery containing toothpaste inhibits Streptococcus mutans growth (p value <0.05) that there is a significant inhibition effect of Apium graveolens L. extract toothpaste on the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Conclusion: There is an inhibition effect of celery leaf (Apium graveolens L.) extract toothpaste on the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Keywords: streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, inhibition, toothpaste, celery, apium graveolens L

Abstract

Abstract

Oral health problems are more vulnerable in children with disabilities than children in general. One of the efforts to minimize these problems is to increase parents' awareness of the importance of maintaining effective oral health in children with disabilities. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the knowledge and skills of parents who have children with disabilities in the early detection of oral health problems so that severity does not occur. This community service program is in the form of socialization activities and early detection skills training conducted for 71 parents/caregivers on 20 September 2024 at the RSGMP Baiturrahmah Hall, Padang City. Pre and post-assessment of parents' knowledge and skills were conducted, out of 72 parents/caregivers only 39 parents/caregivers completed the pre and post-test. The results of the analysis of existing data showed a significant increase in both the knowledge and skills of parents in the early detection of oral health problems. This activity needs to be carried out regularly as a promotional effort to improve the degree of oral health in children with disabilities.

Abstract

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by overgrowth of Candida albicans species. Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia L.) is one of the plants that has antifungal activity through the content of compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, terpenoids, pheno-lics, and tannins. This study discusses the inhibition of noni fruit extract (NFE) at concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20% against the growth of C.albicans using laboratory experimental methods with a descriptive approach and using a one shot case study de-sign. Noni fruit was extracted using maceration method with 96% methanol solvent. A total of 18 samples of C.albicans were divi-ded into 3 treatments, namely 10%, 15% and 20% concentrations. The inhibition test was carried out using the pitting diffusion me-thod, while the measurement of the inhibition zone using a caliper showed that 10% NFE had an inhibition that was categorised as moderate, 15% was categorised as strong, and 20% was also categorised as strong. It was concluded that noni fruit extract has inhibitory power against the growth of C.albicans, with the best effectiveness at a concentration of 20% which showed a strong inhibition category.

Abstract

Oral bad habits are repeated actions carried out in the oral cavity that can cause malocclusion. Kinds of oral bad habits are showing thumbs, biting nails, breathing through the mouth, biting or licking the lips, and sticking out tongue or tongue thrusting. Oral bad habits will be impacted to increase overjet and reduce overbite. Parents' knowledge is an important factor in the oral bad habits of children. Improvement efforts can be carried out by using media counseling such as videos. The research was intended to measure the effect of using video to increase parents' knowledge about oral bad habits that causemalocclusion in children. This was a Pre-experimental study with a One Group Pretest-Posttest cross-sectional design. Measurements were carried out using a questionnaire. Questionnaires and videos were provided via a google form. The population were parents who have children aged 3-6 years in RT 003 RW 001 Pandan Baru Kota, Sample was taken with a total sampling of 40 people. The knowledge level was measured by a questionnaire. Data analysis was univariate and bivariate with Paired T-test. The results showed that the average of parents' knowledge before video intervention is 45% and after the video was given it increased to 71%. The research could be concluded that using video was effective to increased parents' knowledges about oral habits that causes malocclusion in childrens (p= 0.000)
