Abstract

This research examines the figurative language in Joji’s captivating English song, “Glimpse of Us”. The research drew its source from the international song website, www.azlyrics.com. The researchers meticulously analyzed the findings using a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Remarkably, the song revealed a rich tapestry of figurative language encompassing seven distinct types. Allegory, the dominant form, emerged seven times, while metaphor emerged three times. Hyperbole and symbol each made two appearances, lending further depth and nuance to the composition. Additionally, the song employed apostrophe, repetition, and synecdoche once each, contributing to its overall lyrical magnificence. In terms of percentage, allegory comprised an impressive 41%, metaphor accounted for 18%, hyperbole, and symbol contributed 12%, and apostrophe, repetition, and synecdoche each held 6%.

Abstract

This research was made to describe the problems and difficulties of speaking to students at SMK GKPI 2 Pematangsiantar. This research used descriptive qualitative research. Researchers used questionnaire as technique to collect the data for this research. The results of this research indicate that students of SMK GKPI 2 Pematangsiantar have several problems and difficulties in speaking subjects. There are several obstacles and difficulties in practicing speaking, namely 1) the understanding about conversation; (2) lack of vocabulary; (3) pronunciation; (4) less confidence (5) worries about making grammar errors, (6) lack of technology, and (7) lack of motivation. Based on the data, the majority of students showed that vocabulary was the most problem in speaking skills.

Abstract

The act of reading necessitates that student readers employ various cognitive and linguistic tactics to comprehend the meaning embedded within the text. Using an e-learning method through WhatsApp groups to teach reading comprehension on narrative texts can be a new breakthrough. Therefore, the present study aims to find out the effect of WhatsApp groups on narrative text in junior high school students to teach reading comprehension. To reach the research aims, the study used experimental research method. The population of this research was 330 students of grade 9 of junior high school in Pematangsiantar. The researchers divided the samples intor control group and experimental group. The data collection method used was the reading tests employed to the students which covered pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The statistical analysis employed t-test analysis. Comparison of data from both groups indicated superior performance by the experimental group. The findings unequivocally show that the experimental intervention employing WhatsApp have significant effect on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text compared to traditional approaches. While WhatsApp has proven to be an effective tool, researchers must consider the challenges of using it for reading instruction in remote areas with limited internet connectivity. Students cannot access WhatsApp-based reading lessons without internet access, though they can still search for information through text messages. Therefore, it is important to examine the limitations of utilizing WhatsApp for reading education in areas with poor internet infrastructure.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji apakah WhatsApp sebagai media pembelajaran dapat memengaruhi dan meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kuantitatif dengan desain quasi eksperimen. Untuk melakukan penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan instrumen penelitian berupa tes membaca, khususnya tes membaca naratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai t-hitung yang ditemukan adalah 7,143 dengan nilai t-tabel sebesar 1,672 dengan derajat kebebasan 58 dan taraf signifikansi 0,05 dalam uji dua sisi. Setelah mencermati pengujian hipotesis secara menyeluruh, peneliti menetapkan bahwa nilai t-hitung melebihi nilai t-tabel dengan keyakinan yang tinggi. Hal ini menyebabkan diterimanya hipotesis alternatif (Ha) dan ditolaknya hipotesis nol (H0), sehingga memperkuat temuan penelitian. Jelaslah bahwa intervensi eksperimen menggunakan WhatsApp memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan lebih besar terhadap peningkatan pemahaman membaca teks naratif dibandingkan dengan buku teks tradisional bagi siswa di SMP Negeri 4 Pematangsiantar.
