Abstract

The sustainability of amphidromous fishes is determined by the success of the larval recruitment process from marine to freshwaters habitats. This study aimed to determine the recruitment pattern of freshwater amphidromous fish to the Cimaja River estuary, Palabuhanratu Bay in terms of season and daily. Amphidromous fish were caught monthly on the 25th of Hijri or waning crescent from December 2020 to August 2021. Sampling in one whole day with observation intervals every 4 hours was carried out in June 2021 to reveal the time of larvae and juveniles of the amphidromous fish recruit to the Cimaja River estuary. A total of 13 species of amphidromous fishes representing five genera and two families was captured. The recruitment of amphidromous fishes into the Cimaja River occurs between the peak of the rainy season to dry season. Generally, amphidromous recruit into the estuary waters of the Cimaja River is at the juvenile stage (11.9-21.8 mm body length). However, the recruitment of some amphidromous fish species appears at the postflexion stage (6.9-11.9 mm BL). Based on diel observations, larvae and juveniles of amphidromous fish are generally preferred to recruit to the Cimaja River estuary in the early morning (03:00 am) and afternoon (03:00 pm). Recruitment of amphidromous fish larvae to the Cimaja River follows a semi-diurnal tidal cycle which is a tidal type in Palabuhanratu Bay. Amphidromous fishes use tidal flux to recruit and migrate upstream of the Cimaja River through estuaries.

Abstract

Nyalawean is a tradition carried out by the people of the southern coast of Java, especially in Sukabumi and Banten Regencies. In practice, nyalawean is an activity in coastal communities that involves catching young fish around the coast and river estuaries in groups. This fishing activity often attracts local and foreign tourists enjoying the beautiful beaches. This research was conducted as a preliminary study that formulates the potential of the nyalawean tradition as a form of cultural tourism around the southern coastal waters of Java, Sukabumi and Banten Regencies. Literature studies and direct interview surveys were finished in April-August 2023. We found that young fish caught in the nyalawean procession were generally in the larval and juvenile stages. The results of direct interviews with 887 tourists showed 94.8% of tourists' enthusiasm for the nyalawean tradition. Most tourists consider nyalawean to be an exciting form of tradition to watch. Some even desired to catch and enjoy the processed fish larvae and juveniles they obtained. These findings show the high potential for the nyalawean tradition to be developed as a form of marine tourism on the southern coast of Java, Sukabumi and Banten Regencies

Abstract

Selectivity is a standard of the level of friendliness of a fishing gear that is reviewed based on the diversity of catches obtained. Nowadays, fishing gear construction and techniques are developed to obtain selective fishing methods. This study compared the selectivity of traps and push nets in glass eel fishing in the Cikaso River, Indonesia. The study was conducted from December 2020 to April 2021. The catch diversity index and relative abundance were used to analyze the selectivity of catch diversity in both fishing gears. Comparative analysis shows that push nets have slightly better selectivity than traps. However, the study's overall results showed a fairly good selectivity of both fishing gears in catching glass eels (Anguilla spp.) as their main catch target.

Abstract

The troll line fishing fleet is one of several capture fisheries business units often found at the Palabuhanratu Archipelago Fishing Port, Sukabumi, Indonesia. The Sukabumi Central Capture Fisheries Statistics Agency noted a decrease in trolling boats catching and landing fish at the Palabuhanratu Archipelago Fishing Port in the last ten years. This condition allegedly indicates a decline in income for the capture fisheries business players. This research evaluated the net income value of the catch fisheries business unit of the troll line fishing fleet at the Palabuhanratu Archipelago Fishing Port. Data was collected using survey and interview methods from January to March 2023. The purposive sampling method highlighted that 15 respondents consisting of ship owners, captains, and crew members of fishing boats were appointed as sources for this research. Analysis of the fishing business of the Troll Line fishing fleet evaluates the average net income value as 636,496,667 IDR/vessel/year. This net income value is distributed among seven business actors consisting of ship owners (317,596,429 IDR/year), a captain (95,278,929 IDR/year), and four crew members (55,579,375 IDR/person/year). The evaluation value of net income indicates that the fisheries business unit caught by the troll line fishing fleet at the Palabuhanratu Archipelago Fishing Port still has quite promising profits for all business actors.

Abstract

Indonesia covers over 15% of global tuna production. This has placed Indonesia as the top tuna-producing country in the world. Troll line is one of the fishing fleets that targets tuna as main catch, operates in many areas in Indonesia, including those bases at Palabuhanratu Nusantara Fishing Port in Sukabumi. Fishermen complained about uncertain changes of the fishing season in recent years. This causes fishermen unable to determine the right time for fishing. Some trolling fishermen suffer losses and even bankruptcy. This study tried to estimate fishing season for trolling fleets based on three main catch commodities: skipjack tuna, yellowfin tuna, and bigeye tuna. Data on catches and fishing trips are collected monthly from 2018 to 2022 from the Sukabumi Regency Central Capture Fisheries Statistics Agency. Data was processed using a catch-per-unit effort approach followed by a fishing season index analysis. Results show that the three main catch commodities have similar fishing season patterns. Peak fishing season is from the beginning of the east season in June to the middle of the second transition season in October. Productivity of the three commodities reached its lowest point in the lean season in January and February, in the middle and end of the west season. Keywords: catch composition, fishing season, productivity, tuna

Abstract

Abstract

Cikaso is one of several areas in Sukabumi Regency has the highest glass eel catch production. Glass eel catch in the Cikaso area occurs in two areas, around the estuary and river. One of the most dominant glass eel catch species is Anguilla bicolor bicolor. This study compared the length structure of glass eels A. bicolor bicolor caught in the Cikaso Estuary and River areas. Glass eels were caught using a push net with a mesh size of 0.48 mm every month from December 2020 to April 2021. The study revealed that the average length of glass eels A. bicolor bicolor, caught in the river area, was longer (98.0 mm) than those caught in the estuary area (91.2 mm). This is thought to be due to growth factors and the natural selection of glass eels A. bicolor bicolor during their movement in the recruitment process to the Cikaso River area.
