Abstract

AbstractThe terminology in the marriage tradition of the Pontianak Malay community was carried out aimed at preserving knowledge about terms in culture. The problem in this study is how to describe the procession of traditional marriage in Pontianak Malay community in Batulayang Village from the pre-marital stage of the marriage to the post-marital period; what is the term lingual terminology in the Pontianak Malay community customary marriage in Batulayang Village; what is the meaning of terminology in Pontianak Malay community marriage in Batulayang Village. The method in this research is descriptive qualitative. Descriptive form is a description of the customary marriage of the Pontianak Malay community in a qualitative form, namely an explanation in the form of words and sentences. Based on the analysis of the data the researcher draws conclusions that there are 76 terms in the customary marriage of the Pontianak Malay community in the Batulayang Village. The most data is found in endocentric phrases in the form of tools and materials, which are 33 leksemes. The least amount of data in the form of the word affixation (affix), there is one lexeme and no data at all, namely infix. Keywords: Traditional Marriage, Pontianak Malay, Terminology, Lingual Form, and Meaning

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to describe what the major problems are faced by English teachers in implementing scientific method in their classrooms. The method used was case study. The participants of this research were three English teachers of SMAN 3 Pontianak. The writer used questionnaire, class observation, and interview to collect the data. The result showed that the teachers faced problems in implementing scientific method with the average of the implementation was only 64,8% was able be implemented. The most problematic stage was in questioning which was only 60% implemented. Moreover,  experimenting stage was only 63% implemented. Another stage with the same percentage of implementation, networking stage which was only 63% can be implemented. Furthermore, in observing stage it was only 67%. Associating stage was the highest stage that can be implemented by the teachers with the percentage was only 70%. In conclusion, the major problem in implementing scientific method for English teachers was in questioning stage. Keywords: English Teachers, Problems, Scientific Method, Implementation. Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apa masalah utama yang di hadapi guru bahasa inggris dalam mengimplementasikan metode ilmiah. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi kasus. Peserta penelitian ini adalah tiga guru bahasa di SMAN 3 Pontianak. Penulis menggunakan kuesioner, observasi kelas, dan wawancara untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru menghadapi beberapa masalah dalam pengimplementasian metode ilmiah dengan rata-rata pengimplementasian hanya 64,8%. Tahapan yang paling bermasalah adalalah tahapan bertanya dengan diimplementasikan hanya 60%. Selain itu, tahapan mengumpulkan informasi diterapkan hanya 63%. Tahapan lainnya dengan persentasi yang sama adalah mengkomunikasikan dengan pengimplementasian hanya 63%. Selanjutnya, tahapan mengamati hanya 67%. Tahapan mengasosiasi merupakan tahapan dengan persentase tertinggi diimplementasikan oleh guru dengan hanya 70%. Kesimpulannya, masalah utama dalam pengimplementasian metode ilmiah untuk guru bahasa Inggris adalah dalam tahapan menanya. Abstract

Numerous studies support extensive reading as beneficial for second language learners, enhancing vocabulary, grammar, writing, and overall English proficiency. However, there is still a small number of research on how this technique influences students' ability to answer reading comprehension questions. Extensive reading and reading comprehension have quite different reading goals. Extensive reading aims to make readers enjoy reading material and can choose reading materials according to the reader's level. Meanwhile, reading comprehension emphasizes students' level of understanding about the details of reading material. This research aims to look at the effect of extensive reading strategies on students' ability to answer reading comprehension questions. The method used in this research is experimental by using "One Group Pretest-Posttest Design". This design requires to conduct pre-test before implementing the treatment then followed by conducting post-test once it"™s done. The results of this study indicated that the extensive reading strategy applied to class A of Islamic Economics Study Program for 1 semester can significantly improve the quality of students' understanding in answering Reading Comprehension questions. This improvement can be seen from the results obtained in the pretest and post-test which have been conducted before and after treatment (Extensive Reading). By conducting the extensive reading it can bolster students' academic scores by cultivating a deep-seated comprehension, vocabulary breadth, and critical thinking skills. Through consistent exposure to diverse texts, students enhance their overall literacy, fostering a solid foundation for improving academic performance

Abstract

This article presents a community service program conducted at SMAN 1 Sajingan Besar, a high school located near the Indonesia–Malaysia border. The program aimed to improve students’ interest and skills in reading English by introducing an easy and enjoyable reading approach. Over two days, students learned the difference between reading for understanding and reading for details, and were trained to use an online tool called MReader to track their reading progress. The program received enthusiastic responses, especially during quiz games and hands-on practice sessions. Students not only became more motivated to read but also learned how to use digital tools in their English learning. The activity helped create a fun and competitive learning environment and gave students practical experience in choosing and completing English books. The program showed that using technology in learning can increase student interest and reading habits. For lasting impact, regular training, better internet access, and more book options are recommended. This program has the potential to become a long-term solution to support literacy in remote border areas.
