Abstract

Education in border areas is news that cannot be doubted, namely that there are problems regarding a sense of nationalism for students who attend school, in terms of the lack of infrastructure, and the lack of attention from the government because the area is isolated from the district and provincial capitals. Therefore, this service program aims to increase a sense of nationalism through local wisdom on the Indonesia-Malaysia border. The implementation strategy is carried out with a classical approach. Among them is the provision of material that is easily understood by students. The method of implementing the program was carried out in three sessions, namely the welcome session, delivery of material by the team, and giving stimulus to students by playing games (practice) then evaluating by distributing questionnaires about the theme of knowledge of the spirit of nationalism by linking local wisdom. Then it ends with an evaluation of understanding of the material. The results of this service are to provide an increased understanding of the spirit of nationalism, folk games based on local wisdom, national obligatory songs, and questionnaires given as a measurement of students' understanding. The rich culture of local wisdom can increase the spirit of nationalism in students as reinforcement to become more familiar with the surrounding environment in the Indonesia-Malaysia border area

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka [Freedom Curriculum] at the State Senior High School [SMAN] 3 Sungai Kakap which is implemented without completely changing the components of the 2013 Curriculum. This research used the qualitative method with the type of case study on the 10th grade students. The data were collected in the following stages: pre-research, research and post-research. The results of the research show that SMAN 3 Sungai Kakap only implements the Freedom Curriculum in 10th grade; not in 11th grade and 12th grade. This is because it is still a try-out period. The implementation of the Freedom Curriculum is considered by the school to be simpler than the 2013 curriculum. The project-based P5 program at SMAN 3 Sungai Kakap is carried out by students on Fridays with exhibitions of practicum learning outcomes. Even though the Freedom Curriculum has just been implemented at SMAN 3 Sungai Kakap, teachers have received more and better information on student achievement. However, it always requires good experience and knowledge from teachers and educators at the school. The implementation of the Freedom Curriculum at SMAN 3 Sungai Kakap, in addition to the 2013 curriculum, is in the form of a practicum program and teachers"™ collaboration with each other. In addition to the learning process, it still covers the components of the 2013 curriculum. In fact, the Freedom Curriculum complements the 2013 curriculum, such as building the character of local wisdom and values, and increasing students potential, interest, and talents that continue to be pursued in the Freedom Curriculum at SMAN 3 Sungai Kakap.

Abstract

With the mushrooming popularity of extensive reading in language classrooms, teachers might be unaware that students are not only gaining linguistic inputs from their reading but also those related to non-linguistic ones, such as moral values. Frankly speaking, some values may suit their culture, but others may not. This research then aimed to investigate these non-linguistic inputs the students obtained when participating in the Extensive Reading ER program. This is important amid the domination of Western culture in stories that students mostly use. This research tried to identify the types of moral values students attained after attending a one-semester ER program. Also, it questioned if these values fit with the culture and place where they lived. Using the diary method, this research collected students’ post-reading journals over one academic semester. The journals should be filled in every time the students finish reading. Involving 30 students as participants, the research generated 397 entries, 13 on average. The data were analyzed by classifying the students’ responses into five principles of moral values proposed by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. This research found that most moral values in the ER program aligned with those in Indonesia, despite a few differences. It also provided two most frequent moral values that were surprisingly close to Western culture. This research shared some interesting discussion, including the possible reasons why these two categories have a strong domination, outperforming other categories. Finally, the research also provides important notes regarding what teachers should do and key suggestions for future research.

Abstract

Numerous studies support extensive reading as beneficial for second language learners, enhancing vocabulary, grammar, writing, and overall English proficiency. However, there is still a small number of research on how this technique influences students' ability to answer reading comprehension questions. Extensive reading and reading comprehension have quite different reading goals. Extensive reading aims to make readers enjoy reading material and can choose reading materials according to the reader's level. Meanwhile, reading comprehension emphasizes students' level of understanding about the details of reading material. This research aims to look at the effect of extensive reading strategies on students' ability to answer reading comprehension questions. The method used in this research is experimental by using "One Group Pretest-Posttest Design". This design requires to conduct pre-test before implementing the treatment then followed by conducting post-test once it"™s done. The results of this study indicated that the extensive reading strategy applied to class A of Islamic Economics Study Program for 1 semester can significantly improve the quality of students' understanding in answering Reading Comprehension questions. This improvement can be seen from the results obtained in the pretest and post-test which have been conducted before and after treatment (Extensive Reading). By conducting the extensive reading it can bolster students' academic scores by cultivating a deep-seated comprehension, vocabulary breadth, and critical thinking skills. Through consistent exposure to diverse texts, students enhance their overall literacy, fostering a solid foundation for improving academic performance

Abstract

This research aims to analyze critical thinking dimensions in an extensive reading program. The research qualitative research approach, with a case study design. The participants consist of students at the university who take part in extensive reading programs. Data were collected through reading reading logs and tests that measured students' critical thinking. The data collected from the critical thinking test was then analyzed statistically, while the log reading data was processed using a qualitative analysis approach. The results showed that there were differences in students' critical thinking test results before and after participating in the extensive reading program. This result was supported by the participants’ reading logs. The extensive reading program implemented by the researchers may not directly create significant changes in terms of average grades, but the results indicate that the program effectively improves students' overall understanding and critical thinking abilities. Therefore, although the results of the significance test are able to provide an idea of whether the changes that occur between the Pre-Test and Post-Test are random or not, the results of the Ho analysis highlight the substantial impact achieved through the treatment that the researcher provided.

Abstract

Since some students including in my class become more self-oriented and less aware on group, there is a need to integrate online teaching material which contains values in society into English language course. We believe that English language teaching, in some extents, could facilitate this necessity. A good choice of material, for example, is not only beneficial to promote students language skill, but also could inspire students to become a better individual. This paper aims to examine whether online materials could promote students English language skill, especially in listening comprehension. In addition, it is keen to better understand how these resources could influence and develop their moral values. The paper is designed as a classroom action research. To collect data, we employ two tests (pre-and post-test), questionnaires, and interview. Since this paper is still a research design, it should be noted that there is no finding and discussion yet here.
