Abstract

This community service is a free English tutorial for a group of primary schools’ students aged ten years old residing in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta and its surroundings. The program is part of a bigger tutorial program called Bimbingan Belajar Mita (Bimbel Mita) conducted by a non-profit organization that was initiated by the Maria Clarist congregation sisters around eight years ago. The participants of the six-month program were ten students. The method of the community service was teaching the basic English vocabulary through pictorial short English texts and vocabulary games. The former technique was used for the first half of the semester and the latter for the second half of the period. During the tutorial, the students have acquired a number of the targeted English nouns related to objects in the house, garden, animals, colors, professions, fruits, vegetables; verbs related to daily activities at home and adjectives related to descriptions of objects and human beings and some adverbs. In learning the English vocabulary, they show more enthusiasm for games rather than the pictorial reading texts.

Abstract

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic which occurred in 2020, many schools shifted their traditional classroom teaching to online EFL (English as a foreign language) teaching. Various video conferencing platforms were used to mediate synchronous meetings, including Google Meet. Though research focusing on examining aspects related to various video conferencing platforms has been quite frequent, investigation on teachers’ experience in and perception of online EFL teaching in the primary level using Google Meet has been rather scarce. Therefore, the present study intended to examine EFL teachers’ experience in and perception of EFL teaching using Google Meet. The study made use of focused group discussion which involved the participation of three EFL teachers from a private school in Jakarta. Results revealed that teachers had both positive and negative experiences, such as being able to present learning materials with ease and not being able to monitor students fully. Their perceptions towards using Google Meet for EFL teaching was influenced by these experiences and therefore, were concluded to be mixed since participants perceive the platform to be a source of convenience in various aspects, such as presenting learning materials, while still having limitations such as not enabling teachers to monitor students’ learning progress fully.

Abstract

Within the last four years there have been an increasing number of English textbooks for Indonesian primary students. The rising number of the books in the market seems to answer the demand of both Indonesian students and teachers of English as it is now a local load subject with standard of competences set up by Ministry of Education and Culture. Yet, many if not most of the English textbooks are written from the authors’ points of view, which may not be reflective of children’s world. Furthermore, the textbooks provide target language materials that are beyond the competencies. Therefore, this article, as part of a project of writing English textbooks for children, will briefly evaluate the available English textbooks for Indonesian primary students, grades 1 to 3. It was found that out of eight English textbooks randomly evaluated, only three that provided language content that really considered the children’s language development, and the fact that Indonesian primary students are young beginners learning English, a language that is their second or even third language.

Abstract

A dissertation is said to be an academician’s peak of academic achievement. One can demonstrate his expertise, passion in a particular field of study, and skills through his dissertation. Yet, in general, writing a dissertation may not be simple for every graduate student, especially when he has to write a dissertation about language in a language that is not his native language, English for instance, indicating that he must be able to show remarkable capabilities in manipulating the language. To find out about how a non-English speaking student coped with any problems persisted during the process of writing his dissertation in English I conducted a brief interview with an Indonesian lecturer, majoring in Linguistics, who wrote his dissertation in English. The interview presented some important fact in relation to successfully producing a qualified dissertation, i.e. mastery of one’s field of study, and the English academic writing skills. Keywords: Dissertation writing, academic writing, linguistics

Abstract

During the Covid-19 outbreak, with more than one billion school closures occurring worldwide, all teaching and learning interactions have to be conducted online, and it is a challenge for teachers (and learners) to adapt to this sudden shift because most educational institutions were not yet ready. However, regardless of the pandemic, in the era where technology plays a huge part in the advancement of human civilization, it is time for the global education system to evolve and begin incorporating technology into its implementation. Once the pandemic is over, teachers (and learners) will then have the opportunity to choose their medium of teaching and learning interactions, whether it is offline or online. Thus, this study examined and compared the advantages and disadvantages of both offline and emergency remote online teaching. The data were collected through Focus Group Discussion. Several prompts were used as discussion starters, but the researchers allowed the participants to share their opinions freely and let the data speak. The data were then analyzed and coded using thematic analysis. Researchers then made a summary of synthesis assumptions based on and supported by evidence from the data corpus. The findings revealed that teachers tend to favor offline teaching for its direct teacher-student interactions, although the high number of students in one class can be a challenge. Whereas online teaching is preferred for its time-efficiency and flexibility, albeit its technological complexity.

Abstract

Abstract

The present study provides a depiction of Malioboro through language presentation, language preference and sign informativeness. Seven hundred and twenty-nine public signs were examined and analyzed. Analysis was limited to words. A survey on language preference and sign informativeness, clarity and visibility to both local and foreign visitors also conducted. Findings show the dominance of Indonesian language in Malioboro linguistic landscape; 73% of the signs were in Indonesian and all non-commercial signs used Indonesian. Only 15% of the entire signs use English and less than 5% of the signs contain Javanese script or Romanized Javanese. Mainly targeting Indonesian speakers, the LL of Malioboro presents an exclusiveness and reflects a language policy implementation. Abstract

One of the fields of expertise that have rapidly advanced in the process of creating economic and financial decisions and regulations locally, nationally, and globally is accounting. This field necessitates not only high accounting knowledge and skills but also communication skills in english, which still holds a status of the world’s lingua franca. Hence, the need for an english for occupational purposes, particularly the English for accountants. This study attempts to investigate the needs of the accounting students as well as professionals and propose a syllabus to meet the needs. To realize the former, job-reporting and interview to two professional accountants were administered, as well as survey to fifty accounting students. To realize the later, the needs analysis results were analyzed and priorities were made. The needs analysis demonstrates that learning speaking skills and listening skills in the context of accounting should be prioritized over the reading and writing skills. More emphasis should also be given to the formal style of communication as well as exposures to actual accounting-related terminologies.  All of which has become the basis for proposing a syllabus design that integrates theme, task, and genre under the principles of Content-Based Instruction that centers on the teaching the subject content through language. Therefore, the syllabus should be prepared not only by the English instructor but also the accounting instructor. Such a syllabus is expected to provide a learning experience that mirrors the actual demand and context of a professional accountant, including the actual and contextual english language usage.
