Abstract

Reading comprehension is needed by students in order to have a good reading skill. In this journal, the researchers are trying to examine the implementation of NHT technique in improving students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. Quantitative used as the research method with pre-experimental research design. There are three stages in conducting pre-experimental design. First, students are given pre-test to measure their knowledge. Second, students are given the treatment and last, students are given posttest after using NHT technique. In conducting the data, the researchers spend seven times consisted of pretest, posttest, and five times treatments. As the result, the mean score of pre-test is 43.58. After implementing NHT technique in every meeting, reading comprehension of students had been getting better, it can be seen in average of the mean score of post-test became 62.45. It can be concluded that NHT technique can improve students’ reading comprehension.Keywords:  Numbered-head together, Students’ reading comprehension

Abstract

The purpose of this study to analyze type of illocutionary speech acts that used by Hanan Attaki and identifying speech acts utterance by Hanan Attaki on Youtube. The method used in this study is the qualitative descriptive method because this is done only based on the fact and the writer describes the result in from words and the explanation of the result. Data collection method that used is scrutinized method and make a script, is scrutinize use of language by Ustadz Hanan Attaki, then the data is note and classified based on type of illocutionary. In this result the writer analyze all type of illucationary speech act used by Ustadz Hanan Attaki on Video Ust. Hanan Attaki Youtube Channel. The result of this study found 65 clauses that contain the type of illocutionary speech acts, there are representatives (37), directives (22), declarative (5) and commissive (1) each type of the speech acts are delivering different meaning and representative is the most widely used by Ustadz Hanan Attaki. It fits with the illocutionary speech act theory as religious speech containing factual matters raised by religious leaders. Keywords:  Youtube, Pragmatics, Speech Acts, Illocutionary

Abstract

ABSTRAKPandemik meciptakan proses pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris menjadi lebih sulit, selain kemampuan kebahasaan yang harus terpenuhi, masalah keterlibatan siswa, proses pengumpulan tugas dan ketercapaian tujuan pembelajaran yang lebih sulit dicapai melalui pembelajaran daring merupakan masalah yang dihadapain oleh para guru mitra yaitu guru-guru Bahasa Inggris pada tingkat SMP dan sederajat dilingkungan MGMP Kab Bandung Barat. Tujuan dari pengabdian ini adalah untuk memberikan solusi kepada para guru untuk menciptakan pembelajaran yang lebih menarik dengan mengintegrasikan Google Clasroom dengan berbagai macam platform online. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan dalam bentuk workshop luring, yang dilaksanakan pada tanggal 18 Feruari 2021 di salah satu SMP dilingkungan Bandung Barat. Terdapat dua puluh tiga peserta yang juga merupakn anggota dari MGMP Guru Bahasa Inggris Tingkat SMP di Bandung Barat. Pengabdian ini dilakukan dalam 3 tahapan yaitu: a) tahap 1 (tahapan analisis), b) tahap 2 (tahap penyusunan materi), c) tahap 3 (tahapan pelaksanaan), dan d) tahapan  4 (penyusunan laporan kegiatan ). Hasil dari pengabdian ini menunjukan bahwa; 1) para guru peserta workshop sudah mengetahui bahkan sudah memiliki dan mengunakan goggle classroom dalam proses pembelajaran,  2) para guru memliki kesulitan dalam mengiintergasikan Google Classroom dengan platform pembelajaran lainnya, 3) para guru pada akhirnya mampu mengintergrasikan goggle classroom dengan platform pembelajaran lainnya. Namun demikin masalah ketersiadaan alat pemeblajaran yang mampu mendukung pengunaan berbagia platform daring masih terbatas sehingga perlu dibentuknya sinergitas antara guru, orang tua, siswa, sekolah dan otoritas lainnya

Abstract

Teaching in 4.0 era cannot be separated with Information and Communication Technology (ICT). There are many applications that can be used in learning and teaching process. ORAI application is chosen to be used as teaching tool in learning pronunciation. The main objective of this research is to discover the pro and cons from students as the main user in using ORAI application in learning pronunciation. This research implemented qualitative as research method and the participants of the research was 35 students of third semester of English students in IKIP Siliwangi. The data were collected by observation and interview. The result of the research showed that most of the participants agree that ORAI brings more benefits in learning pronunciation practice class. Their agreement can be classified into four categories: accessibility, comfortability, technicality, and integrated learning. The students were motivated and they could learn effectively. While, some of the students indicated that they did not want to use this application, they just delivered that this application has weaknesses in their process of practicing English pronunciation. Their cons on the use of ORAI are classified into two categories; topic difficulties and technicalities. Overall, the implementation of ORAI has positive effect for students in pronouncing correctly and they have good feedback to trigger them for practicing a lot. On the other hand, pronouncing English well will make a big contribution to their communication skills.

Abstract

As Millennial generation, students nowadays have limitless concept of time and space, they broke logical and physical barriers during the process of communication including in the process of learning. Blanded learning and hybrid learning are one of the latest phenomenon in Education. In shortest perception students will encoder positive effect toward the uses of technology in school but in fact some of them also encounter obstacle and problems. This research aims to project the students’ pros and cons on the use of one of ICT called PADLET during the process of speaking activity. This research uses 35 students of one private university in Cimahi, Indonesia. Qualitative method used to provide detail finding associate with supportive theories.  Observation that was taken from both online processes during submitting and commenting the speaking video and offline situation were used and then strengthen by the use of open questions interview. From the data, it showed that students pros on the idea of; (1) collaboration, (2) Flexibility. (3) Autonomous Learning.  While on cons students mark on; (1) technicality issue, (2) Psychological elements.      Keywords: ICT; PADLET; Pro; Cons; Speaking.

Abstract

In English Foreign Language (EFL) class, learners are not familiar with English in daily conversation, except several learners who have background in using English in their home or environment. Therefore, teacher plays a significant role as facilitator to introduce them into the language. This study aims to describe teacher talk and students talk as well as the way teacher talk is realized in young learners’ classroom interaction by applying a descriptive method. The fifth grade classroom interaction at a primary school in Majalengka was recorded as the sample of the analysis. The data gained through observation was in the form of transcribed interaction. Besides, interview was also used to collect the data. To analyze the data, this study employed Flanders Interaction Analyzed Categories. Upon analyzing the data, the following findings are identified; 1) Accepting feeings (2 occuraces); 2) Encouragement (17 occuraces); 3) Accepting or using ideas of learners (54 occuraces); 4) Asking questions (142 occuraces); 5) lecturing (49 occuraces); 6) Giving directions (53 occuraces); 7) Criticizing learners behaviour (9 occuraces); 8) Learners-response (151 occuraces); 9) Learners-initiation (7 occuraces); and 10) Period of silence or confusion (8 occuraces). Finally, the use of similar activity for too long will make young learners feel bored, therefore, teacher needs to provide variety and more meaningful activities. In this case, teacher can use various techniques to stimulate learners’ response. Besides, creating group discussion will give more opportunity to the learners to talk and learn from their peers.Keywords: teaching speaking; teacher talk; students talk; young learners.

Abstract

Thematic progression is a way of developing themes and rhemes in clauses. In other words, thematic progression is a strategy or a specific way to make writing more effective. In addition, thematic progression is a prominent aspect of systemic linguistic functional. Thematic progression has been widely studied in English over the past few years and proves that is very important element in writing. In other words, good writing is effective writing. Therefore, themes and rhemes play a role in creating good texts. Besides that, thematic progression has also been done for many purposes. Therefore, the focus in this study is to describe the pattern of thematic progression in a student writing. It purpose to know which thematic pattern of progression is widely used in the student's writing. Therefore, this research entitled Thematic Progression Analysis in Students' Writing. In this study the researchers used the theory of Bloor and Bloor (2014) which states there are 4 types of patterns of thematic progression, namely the constant theme pattern, the linear theme pattern, the split theme pattern, and the derived theme pattern. To carry out this research, the data is taken from the writings of English A2 / 2014 students in IKIP Siliwangi, Cimahi. There are 47 student writing data. The researcher took 5 samples from the data by choosing the same number of sentences from each text. The results show that the thematic development pattern that is widely used by the students of class A2 / 2014 is the pattern of constant theme, the second pattern is linear theme, the third pattern is the split theme and the last pattern is the derived theme.

Abstract

Abstract Pronunciation as one of the speaking element works an important role in students’ speaking. Many research has been conducted in both how to improve students’ pronunciation and developing the theories. As problems, many students faced some difficulties in producing proper English sounds; additionally the teachers also have problems in selecting proper material and exercise for the students. This research attempted to develop a course book in teaching pronunciation that can help the teacher in managing the classroom and support the independent learning process of the students. The Research and Development (R&D) is used as method of the research since this method is very suitable for developing a new product or perfecting an existing product that can be justified. This method is divided into three parts; introductional study, product development, and testing involve validation from experts, and revision. The subject of the research is the second semester students of English education study program of IKIP Siliwangi. The instruments used were observation, interview ,and test validation. The observation used to see the real condition during the implementation of the topics. Interview was conducted to gather the data related with the topic used in the course book in every unit. There were eight topics obtained through the interview. The test is used to validate the eligibility of each topic. From the result, the mean score of content was 79.75, while display was 78.05 and language was 78.86. The researchers conclude that this course book can be used as learning resources in teaching pronunciation.Keywords: course book, pronunciation, R and D  Abstrak Pronunciation adalah salah satu element kemmapuan berbicara yang memiliki peranan penting. Banyak penelitian yang sudah dilakukan pada peningkatan pronunciation siswa dan pengembangan teori. Siswa memiliki masalah dalam memproduksi bunyi dalam Bahasa inggris, selain itu guru juga memiliki masalah dalam menentukan materi dan latihan yang sesuai. Penelitian ini mencoba untuk mengembangkan sebuah bahan ajar dalam pengajaran pronunciation yang dapat membantu guru dalam mengelola kelas dan mendukung proses pembelajaran yang mandiri. Research and development (R and D) digunakan sebagai penelitian karena penelitian ini sangat sesuai untuk mengembangkan sebuah produk baru bahan ajar. Metode ini dibagi menjadi tiga bagian yaitu: studi penndahuluan, pengembangan materi, dan   uji validasi dari para ahli. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester dua pendidikan Bahasa inggris di IKIP Siliwangi. Instrumen penelitian ini adalah observasi, wawancara,dan tes validasi. Observasi dilakukan untuk mengetahui kondisi lapangan dalam pembelajaran pronunciation. Wawancara digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data sesuai dengan topik bahan ajar. Ada delapan topik dalam buku bahan ajar ini berdasarkan hasil wawancara. Kemudian test validasi dilakukan untuk mengukur bahan ajar yang di hasilkan. Dari hasil penelitian, rata-rata nilai isi buku adalah 79.05, sedangkan tampilan buku adalah 78.05, dan Bahasa adalah 78.86. Peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa buku bahan ajar dapat digunakan sebagai sumber bahan ajar dalam pengajaran pronunciation. Kata Kunci: Pronunciation, bahan ajar, R dan D

Abstract

The speaking capability of the second-semester students in STKIP Siliwangi BANDUNG can still be improved since they have the chance to change. The college location, the lecturers, and the students’ capability itself enable them to get the best result of the study. However, they still speak with hesitation since they feel not confidence to speak, or in the other way they lack motivation. Therefore, this study aims to improve the students speaking skill through Task-based Instruction. This method relays on the use of task to gather students and they have to accomplish the task with their own way. This study consists of two cycles, each cycle consists of a pre-test, two meetings treatment, and post-test. From the data taken, the result tends to be good. There is an improvement in both the students’ ability and motivation. The improvement can be seen on their increasing on their speaking score and in their way, they perform their speaking. In conclusion, a task can help students to study by their own. It works when it was implemented on the second students of STKIP Siliwangi Bandung.Keywords: Action Research, Speaking Skill, Task-Based Instruction

Abstract

This research is entitled Political Conceptual Metaphor in Political Discourses: A CognitiveSemantics Study. The study investigates the type of conceptual metaphor found in the politicaldiscourses. The discourses used as the data are taken from TIME Online Magazine duringFebruary 2015. Moreover, this study also tries to find out the conceptualizations of politics. Thisresearch analyzes the input of political domain and the input of other domains. This research also investigates the source and the target domain of structural metaphor of politics. In this study the researcher adapts several theories related to conceptual metaphor from Lakoff and Johnson, andEvans and Green. Moreover, this research also the theory from Fauconnier The result shows thatorientational metaphor is more common than ontological metaphor in the political discoursesunder the issue of 2016 general election. From 105 metaphorical statements, the researcher found42 orientational metaphors and 63 ontological metaphors. It shows that in the politicaldiscourses, politics commonly being projected as some concrete substances. Keyword: political conceptual methaphor, political discourse, cognitive semantics
