Abstract

Background: Medikamen intrakanal used to remove remaining bacteria in the root canal after the instrumentation process, especially with some of the material between the infected root canal. The purpose of the medikamen intrakanal, among others, is reducing the number of bacteria, by preventing the growth of bacteria, eliminates exudate periapikal, prevent or restrain resorpsi root and prevent infected root canal system. The most influential of these bacteria i.e. Staphylococcus aureus. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of three intracanal medicament ingredients as anti-bacterial in Staphylococcus aureus.Method: The research, an experimental laboratory method carried out with a post test only control group design, was performed on Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that had been cultured and divided into 4 groups each given 1 mg zinc oxide paste, 1 mg antibiotic paste, 1 mg calcium hydroxide, and aquadest as negative control. Subsequently the results are seen from the zone of inhibition and kill zone which are measured by calliper and analyzed by One-way Annova followed by the Post-hoc LSD.Result: The result of On-way Anova test (p=0.000), showed there was a difference for using medicaments zinc oxyde, antibiotic paste, and calcium hydroxide towards Staphylococcus aureus. The post hoc LSD test showed there was a significant mean’sdefference of inhibition zone and kill zone (p-0.05) intergrups. Conclusion: there was an effect after using zinc oxyde, antibiotic paste, and calcium hydrxide as antibacterial on Staphylococcus aureus bacteria seen from inhibition zone and kill zone.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting structures of the teeth. Due to its often asymptomatic progression in early stages, timely diagnosis is frequently challenging. Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatments on the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) among individuals diagnosed with periodontitis. Methods: An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted using a pre-test and post-test group approach. The study involved 100 patients aged 18–60 years who met predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and underwent periodontal therapy either non-surgical or surgical at Sultan Agung Islamic Dental and Oral Hospital (RSIGM) between August and December 2024. The OHIP-14sp questionnaire was used to measure OHRQoL across seven domains using a Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests to evaluate differences between pre- and post-treatment scores. Results: A marked reduction in OHIP-14sp scores was observed across all domains following treatment. The most pronounced improvements occurred in the domains of social disability (−46.2%) and functional limitation (−45.1%). Overall, the total OHIP-14sp score improved by 43.9%. All domains exhibited statistically significant differences between baseline and follow-up scores (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings indicated that both non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapies contributed significantly to enhancing patients’ quality of life by alleviating physical discomfort and improving psychological and social well-being.

Abstract

Background: Enterococcus faecalis bacteria is widely regarded as the leading cause of root canal treatment failure due to its ability to survive in extreme environments. The use of herbal plants such as Aloe vera can be used as an intracanal medicament because it has been proven to have an antibacterial property. Calcium hydroxide (aqueous) intracanal medication mixed with Aloe vera is able to inhibit the growth of Enterococcus faecalis, to see the antibacterial effectiveness of the combination of Aloe vera extract with calcium hydroxide paste (aqueous) as an intracanal medicament against Enterococcus faecalis bacteria. Methods: This experimental research was conducted in the laboratory with a post-test control design. The number of research samples used was 30 pieces. The maceration method was used to make the Aloe vera extract and the Mc Farland turbidity standard was adjusted for Enterococcus faecalis bacterial growth. Then to determine the antibacterial effectiveness, the inhibition zone which is the area around the well that is clear and smaller in diameter than the well, was measured using a digital caliper. Results: Statistical tests were performed using the Kruskal Wallis test and obtained a significance number of 0,000 (p <0.05) then the Mann Whitney test was carried out to obtain a significance number of 0.000 (p <0.05). Conclusions: According to the results of this study, calcium hydroxide paste was less effective at killing Enterococcus faecalis bacteria than a mixture of calcium hydroxide and aloe vera extract.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Broken instruments affect the outcome and prognosis. A broken instrument will prevent the procedure of cleaning and shaping, irrigation and obturation of the root canal on the obstructed root section causing failure in endodontic treatment. There are some treatments for broken instrument including retrieving a broken fragment file and bypassing it on the root canal. the aim of the case report aims to provide an alternative for retrieving broken instruments using the H-file braiding technique. Method: A 38-year-old female patient came to the Dental Conservation Clinic RSGM Prof. Soedomo FKG UGM. A patient got a history of initial root canal treatment in a clinic, which ended with a separated file on canine teeth left upper. No complain pain, from the investigation radiographic there is an instrument broken in half apical. The teeth 23 seen temporary restoration cavity class I is still in good. Retrieving broken instruments using the H-file braiding technique, preparation with step back techniques, obturation with warm vertical condensation technique and class I composite resin restorations with fiber-reinforced retention. Result: No complain pain after 2 weeks retrieving broken instrument. Conclusion: The technique of the H-file braiding technique is one technique to retrieve a broken instrument, this procedure is simple, cost-effective, harmless to the teeth and gives root canal sealing.
