Abstract

A study about the effect of tree architecture on canopy throughfall and stem flow was conducted upstream of Batang Mahat River Basin, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Four dominant tree species in the location, Voacanga foetida, Guioa sp, Schima wallichii and Rhodoleia champonii, were selected and represented in architecture by Scarrone, Schoute, Rauh and Leeuwenberg, respectively. Furthermore, the sample was three trees of each species. The throughfall canopy was measured using a 1 x 1 m plastic plot placed at the edge, while the stem flow was calculated by two meters plastic tube with a five-litre tank at the bottom. These data were collected eight times over one month. The study aimed to the analyzed relationship between tree architecture and canopy throughfall and stem flow upstream of the Batang Mahat River Basin. The result showed that Schima wallichii differed significantly in throughfall canopy relative to the other three species. Additionally, V. foetida significantly differed in stem flow compared to the other tree species. There was no correlation between throughfall canopy, stem flow and precipitation, but the two parameters were affected by three architectures. These findings are useful for soil and water conservation in the upper Mahat River Basin.

Abstract

His study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Nagari Forest Management Institution in achieving the objectives of the Social Forestry Program and examine the factors that influence the effectiveness of the Nagari Forest Management Institution in achieving the objectives of the Social Forestry Program. This research is a qualitative research using interviews, observations and FGDs to collect research data. The results of this study indicate that the Nagari Forest Management Institute in implementing the Social Forestry program from an ecological aspect has been effective, this can be seen from changes in the behavior of exploitative permit holders to care about forests, permit holders have played an active role in preserving and protecting forests, namely by planting replanting forest plants in agroforestry manner so as to have a positive impact on the environment in the form of maintaining water sources, uprooting critical land, conserving biodiversity, and reducing forest fires, so that forest sustainability is maintained. Furthermore, the Nagari Forest Management Agency in the economic aspect is considered ineffective because the social forestry program has not been able to increase the amount of production generated from business activities, the amount of net profit and business expansion and this program has not opened up many business opportunities for permit holders. Then the authors also found that not all of the Social Forestry Business Institutions formed at LPHN could operate and carry out transactions and the ability to access permit holders in marketing Non-Timber Forest Product products was also still low. The Nagari Forest Management Institution in the social aspect is also ineffective where the LPHN has not been able to increase the knowledge of permit holders, as seen from the lack of participation of LPHN members in every activity and the lack of strong institutional capacity. LPHN has also not been able to provide satisfaction to permit holders with the results achieved, and has not had an impact on farmers

Abstract

This research executed in Siberut island which has been specified Unesco as Biosphere Reserve. The purpose of research was to identify the policy which has been specified in Siberut, knows implementation of management, knows perception and participation of public and knows interaction of the parties involving in management Biosphere Reserve. Method applied is Inventory and contents analysis of policy, Indepth Interview with cross check, Open interview with descriptive qualitative and Inventory and Stakeholder analysis. Republic of Indonesia Government doesn't support expansion of Siberut Biosphere Reserve for all island. There is understanding difference and exploiting of Biosphere Reserve according to the Government with MAB-UNESCO so do with perception there are difference between publics Siberut with the Government. Local public assumes that forest Siberut is custom forest which its the domination stays at custom public according to custom Arat Sabulungan, where its the exploiting and management is done based on custom, but the Government considers to be state forest. Implementation of Siberut Biosphere Reserve Pledge based on Indicator Implementation released by Unesco, 1996 till now still uncommitting for overall of area Biosphere Reserve, except to of Core area (Siberut National Park). Implementation at core area based on Indicator Implementation (Unesco, 1996) mostly has been executed, except for Indikator 5,6,8,9 and 16. Role and influence MAB and TNS in Siberut still be low for the reason need to be improved. Keyword: Cagar Biosfer Siberut, Siberut Biosphere Reserve.
