The focus of the analysis is on the actors and factors causing imprisonment, types dan impacts of imprisonment, efforts to overcome the imprisonment, and the end of the imprisonment experienced by the female protagonist. To analyse this problems, feminist literary criticism is used supported by the stereotypes of the nineteenth century women, the medical opinion at that time and the feminist perspective concerning the mental disorder experienced by women, and the concept of oppression in the imprisonment as well. Abstract

This paper deals with the novel entitled The Blacker the Berry written by Wallace Thurman. The focus of analysis is on the existence of Emma Lou, a young woman with very black skin. The literary research method used is the contextual method supported by Sartre’s ‘Modes of Existence’, Bergoffen’s concept on female’s body, the concept of intra-racial racism, and Faludi’s ‘Backlash’ framed in feminist literary criticism. The result shows that it is not easy for a young, black-skinned woman to live in a world still strictly applied intra-racial racism. She has to endure a bombardment of existential backlashes in the form of otherness due to the ideology adoring lighter skin. Her decision to construct her own existence emerges after she is able to accept her specific blackness.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the theme of free choices and their relation to the stated consequences embodied in the two short stories, one by W.W. Jacobs entitled The Monkey’s Paw and another one by Richard Matheson entitled Button, Button. The analysis focuses on four aspects; namely, the situational triggers of the free choices, the gripping conflicts in the free choices, the ethical consequences, and the purpose of the twisted endings. The concepts borrowed to support the analysis are the concepts concerning situational choices, morality types, and ethical consequences. The research methods applied in the analysis are the combination of the library research, the textual method enriched with the relevant contexts in order to completely dig out the proposed problems The results of the discussion show that every free choice taken under whatever reason will lead to the stated consequence whether it is unbelievable or impossible. The superstitious atmosphere in The Monkey’s Paw and the mysterious atmosphere in the Button, Button, all lead to the inevitability to avoid the temptation to choose resulting in the disastrous consequences.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the life of the young wife that is clipped by many “othering” factors that prevent her from becoming a Self. The analysis is focused on the “othering” factors and the impacts on the young wife and on her relationship with her sick husband. The analysis is done through the perspective of existentialism combining the existentialism of Sartre and Beauvoir. Since the focus is on the female character, the particular perspective used is on the existential feminism focusing on the “woman-being-for-others” mode of being. The methods of research are the combination of library research method with its close-reading technique, the qualitative method, and the contextual method of literary analysis. The result shows that it is difficult for a wife to be a Self when she has to face many “othering” factors such as the husband’s illness, the doctors’ suggestion to move to a temperate climate State, the new environment, and the death of the husband while they are still on the train. These “othering” factors do not only clip the wife’s socialization, love and relationship with her husband, and anticipation to return home, but also clip the wife’s life so that she will never have a chance to be a Self forever.

Abstract

This research examines social conflict related to the patriarchal culture in Batak Toba society and describes how patriarchal culture discriminates, weakens, and shackles Batak Toba women as reflected in the short story entitled "Nyawa Sisa" by Sebastian Partogi. The writer conducted library research using contextual methods combined with the sociology of literature to analyze the social issues in this short story. The results show how "Nyawa Sisa" reflects that the patriarchal culture indirectly oppresses and discriminates against women. Men dominate women physically and non-physically, both in the personal and social aspects. Men with special privileges often use their power to commit violence against women and make them the second class.
