Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to discuss the unique relationship between two women living in the same roof for 25 years which takes an unexpected turn after the breadwinner that unites them uncompromisingly passes away. The focus is on the impacts of the changing types of bonding on the life of the two women in G.D. Johnson’s short story entitled Free. To support the discussion, several concepts are borrowed, such as the concepts of female domesticity and patriarchy. Since the center of analysis is on the women, the feminist criticism is used. This criticism is supported by contextual method of literary analysis which combines the extrinsic elements with the intrinsic ones especially character, conflict, and setting. The result shows that the death of the patriarchal figure breaks the imposing bonding in the life of the two women. After a moment of internal conflict experienced by each woman, both can put aside their uncomfortable past to create a mutual bonding for the rest of their life. Key words: female domesticity, patriarchy, contextual method

This paper focuses on the life of Edna Pontellier, the female main character in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening. The purpose is to analyse the influence of the three men in Edna Pontellier’s life. The analysis is done using the concept of id, ego, and superego from Freudian psychoanalysis. The result shows that the first man in Edna Pontellier’s life, Mr. Pontellier/her husband, serves as the superego that always directs Edna’s ego. The second man, Robert Lebrun, is her lover who encourages her to win back her ego which makes her able to begin resisting the superego’s demands. The third man, Alcee Arobin, is the woman-seducer who arouses and fullfils her id in the form of sexual desires which has been repressed so far. However, the psychological conflicts that she has to endure lead to her decision to end her own life in her own way. Key words: id, ego, superego, Freudian psychoanalysis.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the experience of Angela Murray, the female mulatto protagonist, when she finally decides to pass as a white person in Plum Bun, a novel written by Jessie Redmon Fauset. Considering that the focus of analysis is a female, the feminist literary criticism is used as the main framework. The contextual method of analysis is supported by some concepts concerning skin color and passing. The result shows that Angela goes through three periods of her existence. At first she plays with her skin color by passing temporarily as white with her mulatto mother. Then she decides to pass permanently as white and moves to a different state in which she is involved in an intimate relationship with a wealthy racist white man and humiliatingly hurts her younger black sister, her black female acquaintance, and the man she actually loves. Finally she confesses her true racial heritage and makes amends to the people she has hurt and finds the happiness she has sought so far. Keywords: skin color, passing as white, racist, racial heritage PENGALAMAN ANGELA MURRAY MENJADI KULIT PUTIH DALAM PLUM BUN KARYA JESSIE REDMON FAUSET AbstrakTujuan dari makalah ini adalah untuk mengkaji pengalaman Angela Murray, protagonis mulato perempuan, ketika ia akhirnya memutuskan untuk ‘passing’ atau menjadi kulit putih dalam novel berjudul Plum Bun karya Jessie Redmon Fauset. Abstract

The famous myth of Narcissus is about a mythical handsome young man who indifferently rejects the love of the nymph Echo leading to Echo’s broken heart and untimely death and his being cursed to excessively adore his own handsome reflection on the pond till his death. The short story entitled Narcissus written by Hayashi Fumiko is intriguing because its title calls to mind the famous myth of Narcissus. However, this short story portrays the myth of Narcissus from a unique perspective. Thus, the aims of this paper are to analyse the reversed myth and negative symbols of Narcissus as reflected in the mother-son relationship in the short story. To support the analysis various psychological understandings of the myth of Narcissus are used as well as various understandings of the symbols of the flowers called Narcissus. The methods of research used are a comprehensive combination of textual-contextual methods as well as library research and qualitative research. The textual method focuses on the intrinsic aspects relevant to the focus of analysis, such as character, conflict, and setting, while the contextual method borrows the psychological concepts of the term Narcissus and the symbolic meaning of the flowers named Narcissus. The result shows that the mother-son relationship clearly portrays the reversed myth in the matter of the gender roles, the type of relationship, and the ending of the relationship. Another result shows that all the symbols related to the flowers of Narcissus turn into negative meanings in the sort of story entitled Narcissus by Hayashi Fumiko. In short, the short story writer turns upside down both the myth and the symbols resulting in an engaging story full of hidden meanings to be interpreted

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of writing this paper is to analyze the problem concerning the oppression of the female character’s identity in Faulkner’s short story entitled A Rose for Emily. The focuses are on the triggering factors of the stunted identity, the efforts to develop personal identity, and the impacts of the undeveloped personal identity. The concept of identity, James Marcia’s concept of identity statuses, and the stereotypes of the women in the nineteenth century are used as analysis tools. The result shows that if identity which should be fluid and able to develop freely is oppressed and stunted many times, the female character will be stuck in the status of “identity foreclosure”. The outcome will be unpredictable and even horrifying. The conclusion that can be drawn is that women are vulnerable to identity crisis because they are often not given chances to develop their identity freely. As a result there is a tendency for those women to do things considered perverse by the society. Keywords: identity, identity statuses, identity foreclosure

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the psychological character of the upper class woman in Katherine Mansfield’s short story entitled A Cup of Tea. The analysis is based on the concept of narcissism, Maslow’s concept of esteem needs, and consumerism. The method of literary analysis is a contextual one focusing on the intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The result shows that the female character has a low self-esteem with narcissistic grandiosity. Such psychological character always needs attention, appreciation, and praises from other people that are obtained by following upper class exclusive and consumptive way of life. It can be concluded that a narcissistic upper class female often hides vulnerable self-esteem by camouflaging it with glamorous appearance full of self-confidence.Keywords: narcissism, esteem needs, consumerism, upper class

Abstract

The focus of this paper is to analyze the domination and resistance in the domestic area as portrayed in Maugham‟s The Colonel’s Lady. The special aims are to analyze the factors that trigger the wife‟s resistance, the kind of resistance carried out by the wife, and the impacts of the wife‟s resistance on the husband. The analysis is supported by the concept of power by Foucault, the concepts of resistance and how to face domination by Vinthagen and Johanson, Husu, Butler et al., Cohen and Taylor, and Woolf. The qualitative method is used in the contextual analysis focusing on the character, conflict, and setting. The result shows that the wife subtly resists the constricting patriarchal atmosphere in the household by constructing a private area in which she actualizes herself in the world of poetry. Her great success enables her to enter a new and different zone where she is the star. This makes the husband feel uncomfortable and even insulted but he cannot do anything because his wife still shows her respect to him and she does nothing unlawful against him.

Abstract

This paper analyzes how harmony between femininity and masculinity is achieved in the short story "The Other Two" by Edith Wharton. The short story tells the story of Alice, who has gone through the failure of her previous two marriages and tries hard to maintain her third marriage with Waythorn. To support the analysis that focuses on Alice and the three men in her life uses concepts of femininity and masculinity, including concept understanding, characteristics, and influencing factors. The research method used is a combination of several methods to obtain a comprehensive analysis. The library method with close reading supports the search for textual data. The contextual method borrows the concepts of femininity and masculinity to support the analysis of textual elements of characters, conflicts, and settings, and the analysis is presented qualitatively. The analysis results show that Alice's femininity tends to be flexible, adaptive, and developed to reduce the turmoil that arose in her third marriage with Waythorn. Alice's flexibility of femininity is also able to melt the stiff atmosphere when the three men in Alice's life with their respective masculinities unexpectedly meet at Waythorn-Alice's house.
