Abstract

This study examines two fairy tales from Japanese and Indonesian people namely the fairy tales “Issunboushi: Sang Ksatria Mungil” (Japan) and “Si Kelingking” (Indonesia) which have the same motif with different versions. This was done to answer the formulation of the problem in this study, how to compare the elements in the structure of the story which includes the similarities and differences in the story “Issunboushi: Sang Ksatria Mungil” with "Si Kelingking". To find out the similarities and differences in the structure of the fairy tales "Issunboushi: Sang Ksatria Mungil" (Japan) and "Si Kelingking" (Indonesia), the two stories have been analyzed used a narrative structure approach by A.J. Greimas. The writer used the structural approach of narratology by A.J. Greimas in order to produce an actant and functional scheme that show the similarities and differences in the structure of these fairy tales. The results of the study show that both have the same story stages, namely the initial situation, transformation, and the final situation. The different elements of the story included the actors (subjects) and their strengths, contradictions, solutions in getting helpers, and the form of helping objects. In addition, the two-fairy tales also have almost similar themes or motives, characterizations and plotting. The moral message of the story conveyed was also not much different. Based on these differences, it can be concluded that the fairy tales "Issunboushi: Sang Ksatria Mungil" and "Si Kelingking" were not related. These differences can be seen from the peculiarities of the two-fairy tales as a form of representation of people's lives at the time the fairy tales were created. In addition, the storytelling of each of these fairy tales took advantage of local geographical conditions to become the object of the story. Penelitian ini menelaah dua dongen dari masyarakat Jepang dan Indonesia, yang bermotif sama, tetapi memiliki versi berbeda, yaitu “Issunboushi: Sang Ksatria Mungil” (Jepang) dan “Si Kelingking” (Indonesia). Hal ini dilakukan untuk menjawab rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini, yakni bagaimana perbandingan unsur-unsur dalam struktur cerita yang mencakupi kemiripan dan perbedaan cerita “Issunboushi: Sang Ksatria Mungil” dengan “Si Kelingking”. Untuk mengetahui persamaan dan perbedaan struktur cerita dongeng “Issunboushi: Sang Ksatria Mungil” (Jepang) dan “Si Kelingking” (Indonesia), kedua cerita tersebut akan dianalisis menggunakan pendekatan struktur naratologi oleh A.J. Greimas. Melalui pendekatan struktur naratologi oleh A.J. Greimas akan dihasilkan skema aktan dan fungsional yang menunjukkan persamaan dan perbedaan struktur cerita dongeng-dongeng tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keduanya memiliki tahapan cerita yang sama, yakni situasi awal; transformasi; dan situasi akhir. Adapun unsur cerita yang berbeda mencakupi pelaku (subjek) dan kekuatannya, pertentangan, solusi dalam mendapatkan bantuan penolong (helper) dan wujud benda penolong. Selain hal tersebut, kedua dongeng itu juga memiliki tema, motif, penokohan, dan pengaluran yang hampir mirip. Amanat atau pesan moral cerita yang disampaikan juga tidak jauh berbeda. Berdasarkan perbedaan-perbedaan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa dongeng “Issunboushi: Sang Ksatria Mungil” dan “Si Kelingking” tidak saling terkait. Perbedaan-perbedaan tersebut dapat dilihat dari kekhasan kedua dongeng sebagai bentuk representasi Kehidupan masyarakat pada saat dongeng tersebut tercipta. Selain itu, pengisahan masing-masing dongeng tersebut memanfaatkan keadaan geografis setempat untuk dijadikan objek cerita.

Abstract

This research thesis discusses Jacqueline Wilson’s The Story of Tracy Beaker about Tracy Beaker, a ten years old girl living in a children’s home waiting for her mother to pick her up. The purpose of this study is to discover the causes and impacts of the absence of the mother’s love for the main character, Tracy Beaker. The writer uses psychological methods and close reading methods with characters, conflict, and setting theories for the intrinsic elements and John Bowlby’s attachment theory for the extrinsic elements. The result of the research indicates that the main character, Tracy Beaker, has increased aggression, delinquency, and affectionless psychopathy because she is abandoned by her biological mother.Keywords: Jacqueline Wilson; love; attachment

Abstract

This paper deals with Ahmad Tohari’s English-translated novel entitled The Red Bekisar. The focus is on the effects of the changing locus on the female protagonist’s hybridity. To support the analysis, several concepts are used, namely, the concepts of hybridity, mimicry, and cultural identity in postcolonial literature. Using feminist literary criticism as the frame of analysis, the general research method used is qualitative research, supported by library research. For the literary analysis, the contextual research method is applied, in which, by considering the character, conflict, and setting, the focus is on the female protagonist’s hybridity and how her hybridity is regarded by people from different loci. The results show that the female character, Lasi, has a different life because of her Javanese-Japanese mixed blood. In the remote village of Karangsoga, her hybridity is scorned, but in the big city of Jakarta, her hybridity is highly appreciated. However, she is treated like an object, a valuable doll that can be transferred to different owners. Her resistance indicates that her agency as a human being emerges when she is cornered.

Abstract

This paper aims to expose the hidden value within the conventional homosexual narrative depicted in "A Small Triumph," a short story by Perry Brass. The analysis is underpinned by key concepts concerning homosexual relationships, gaydar, and Down Syndrome (DS). Employing a comprehensive approach, the study utilizes the library research method for data acquisition. The textual examination is concentrated on delineating the characters and conflicts, while the contextual approach employs concepts related to homosexuality and Down Syndrome to gain deeper insights into the characters and their conflicts. The overall analysis is presented through a qualitative lens. The findings elucidate the intricacies of the homosexual relationship between a youth with DS and an unsuccessful mature writer. Their mutual dependence catalyzes personal growth, with each taking turns to navigate the path towards their ultimate triumph as a homosexual couple.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze Crisostomo’s short story entitled “The Steel Brassiere” to find out how the personal consciousness of the female protagonist emerges, the trigger of the emergence, and the psychological oppressions that she experiences as a domestic wife of a patriarchal husband. The concepts used to support the analysis are three modes of being of existentialism, existential psychology, patriarchy, husband, the personal is political, bras as cultural myth and in the perspective of feminism, and types of verbal abuse. The analysis applies the feminist literary criticism, considering that the focus of analysis is a woman, and the contextual method of literary research which combines intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The analysis is done in a qualitative way supported by library research with its close reading strategy. The result shows that once the obedient wife who keeps her psychological distress by herself is triggered by the steel bra which gives the hint of the image of a strong independent female, her personal consciousness emerges inextinguishable. She is ready to change into a woman who is prepared to refuse the husband’s abrupt order that she is not willing to do and is calmly waiting for the consequences.

Abstract

Considering that the issue of sex and gender is getting more and more complicated, the aim of this paper is to deal with the struggle to accept unique gender identity faced by a young female main character with intersex condition as depicted in the novel entitled None of the Above (2015) written by I.W. Gregorio. To support the analysis certain concepts are borrowed. Based on the complicated and nonlinear relation between sex and gender as detected by Butler, the focus is on the notion of intersex condition, the medical awareness of intersex condition, the meaning of intersex condition, the proposed medical solution for intersex person, and a specific intersex condition called AIS. The research methods used to support the analysis are a combination of library research method, qualitative research method, and contextual research method in the research frame of feminist literary criticism. The results shows that even in the modern world, a person with intersex condition is still considered as a freak who has to struggle painfully, bitterly, and traumatically to understand, overcome, and finally accept her condition. Understanding and support from medical circle, family and close relative, and some open-minded people, help the young intersex female gain her life back as a female whatever her chromosome is.

Abstract

Artikel ini berdasarkan pengabdian masyarakat yang berupa pelatihan penulisan media promosi wisata, khususnya leaflet, kepada staf Dinas Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata Pemerintah Kota Semarang. Diawali dengan mengkaji beberapa leaflet yang diterbitkan oleh Disbudpar Semarang ditemukanlah beberapa kekurangan yang perlu diperbaiki. Untuk itu diadakan pelatihan bagi para staf yang menangani media promosi wisata. Pelatihan dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode ceramah plus yang dibagi dalam empat langkah: ceramah/presentasi, contoh/demonstrasi, diskusi/tanya jawab, latihan/penerapan. Kesimpulan yang dapat ditarik adalah perlunya leaflet khusus untuk setiap objek wisata dengan keterangan yang ringkas dan persuasif dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Untuk itu diperlukan pelatihan yang berkelanjutan. Kata kunci :  penulisan leaflet, Disbudpar Semarang, promosi wisata, objek wisata.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Artikel ini berdasarkan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang ditujukan kepada siswa “SMK Jayawisata” Semarang berupa pelatihan penulisan berbasis folklor dalam bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari pelatihan ini adalah membekali siswa SMK Jayawisata Semarang dengan kecakapan menulis promosi wisata berbasis folklor dalam bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan dibagi dalam dua tahap, yaitu tahap teori yang dilanjutkan dengan tahap praktek penulisan berbasis folklor. Antusiasme siswa SMK Jayawisata dalam mengikuti pelatihan ini mengindikasikan manfaat pelatihan ini sebagai bekal praktis bagi mereka. Simpulan yang dapat ditarik adalah perlunya berbagai pelatihan praktis dalam bahasa Inggris untuk membekali siswa SMK agar siap dalam dunia kerja nantinya.Kata kunci :  penulisan, folklor, bahasa Inggris, promosi wisata ABSTRACT This article is based on a community service to the students of “SMK Jayawisata” Semarang in the form of English training concerning folklore-based writing. The purpose of this training is to supplement the students of “SMK Jayawisata” Semarang with the skill of writing tourism promotion based on folklore in English. The training is divided into two stages, namely the theory stage followed by the folklore-based writing practice stage. The enthusiasm of the students of “SMK Jayawisata” in participating in this training indicates the benefits of this training as a practical supplement for them. The conclusion that can be drawn is that there is a need for various practical training in English to supplement the vocational school students to be ready in the world of work later. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap struktur ketaksadaran kolektif tokoh utama (Rei) dalam novel The Sweet Sins karya Rangga Wirianto Putra. Dalam analisis ini digunakan teori kepribadian Jung, yaitu konsep struktur ketaksadaran kolektif dalam jiwa manusia yang meliputi persona, anima-animus, shadow, dan self. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Dari analisis yang telah dilakukan, diperoleh hasil sebagai berikut. Pertama, tokoh Rei menggunakan persona sebagai cara untuk menyesuaikan diri di lingkungannya. Kedua, shadow dalam diri Rei merupakan pengalaman yang ditolak karena tidak sesuai dengan moral atau norma yang berlaku. Ketiga, tokoh Rei memproyeksikan anima dalam dirinya bukan kepada perempuan tetapi pada sesama laki-laki. Keempat, self dalam diri Rei ditunjukkan dalam bentuk perjuangan untuk mencapai keseimbangan taraf kesadaran dan ketaksadaran saat berpisah dengan pasangannya. Struktur ketaksadaran tokoh Rei memengaruhi kon ik yang terjadi dalam dirinya maupun dengan tokoh yang lain.

Abstract

Racism is a slippery practice having many subtle facets and layers. The purpose of this paper is to study the intra-racial microagressions experienced by the wife in the short story entitled “The Arrangers of Marriage” written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. To support the analysis, several concepts are borrowed. Within the broader concept of racism, the focus is on the meaning of racial micro-aggressions which have several levels. The common concept of inter-racial microagressions is adapted into intra-racial microagressions to conform to the topic of discussion. The academic analysis is also supported by a combination of sound methods. Within the frame of feminist criticism, data are gathered and analyzed using the library research method and the qualitative research method. For the literary research method, contextual research method is applied which covers the intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The results indicate that due to the feeling of superiority of the New York African husband, intra-racial microagressions hegemonize the Lagos African wife in the forms of microattacks, microinsults and microinvalidations. The intention of the Lagos African wife to escape from the intra-racial microagressions must be postponed due to her helpless situation at the time being although now she has a female friend who is willing to help her get out of this situation.
