Abstract

Silo District is the largest ginger producing area in Jember which has great potential to be developed as an agricultural center. Several farmers in Pace Village have developed medicinal plants other than coffee plants. One of the strategies for developing medicinal plants is the preparation of appropriate cultivation technology. Efforts to realize Pace Village to become a Medicinal herbs Center Village need to be continuously supported and assisted in order to increase the quantity and quality of production. This community service activity was carried out as a follow-up to mentoring in Year 1. The activity in this second year aims to provide extensive assistance in the cultivation of medicinal plants by increasing the unit area for planting and improving cultivation production inputs to optimize and develop medicinal plant cultivation in Pace Village. The expansion of the planting area was carried out on land belonging to the village and in several yards of Gapoktan members. Improvement of production inputs through the construction of a nursery managed by the Taman Rizki Farmers Group, the addition of types of medicinal plants, and agricultural tools to support the success of medicinal herbs cultivation towards Pace Village as a Medicinal Herbs Center in Jember Regency.

Abstract

Caffeine was an alkaloid commonly used as activeingredient in cosmetics due to its high biologicalactivity for skin health as anticelulit, sunscreen, antioxidant, and photoaging inhibitor [6]. Caffeinehad potential antioxidant properties that couldprotect cells against the UV radiation inducecarcinogenesis with stimulatory effect on apoptosisin the UVB-treated epidermis cell in mice skin [8].High hidrophilic properties of caffeine (log P = -0.07)caused difficulties to penetrate through the stratumcorneum of human skin [9]. Nanoemulsion was adrug delivery system that had good stability andcould potentially increase penetration of the drugthrough the skin that had particle size approximately1 – 100 nm. Oil phase, aqueous phases, andsurfactant are basic component of nanoemulsion[11]. Surfactant was the important compound inpreparation of nanoemulsion. Type, amount ofsurfactant, and HLB value of surfactant can influencenanoemulsion stability [1]. Isopropyl miristate (IPM)was chemical penetration enhancer (CPE), wasadded in skin drug formulation to incrase thepenetration ability of the drug [3]. This study aimedto investigate the effect of hydrophile lipophilebalance (HLB) value of surfactant combination(tween 80 and span 80) and IPM concentration onthe stability and penetration ability of nanoemulsionusing factorial design method and obtain theoptimum formula of caffeine nanoemulsion usingDesign Expert 9.0 analysis.

Abstract

Sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) was reported to have natural antioxidant properties. Brazillin is the compound responsible for its antioxidant effect. Antioxidants are needed to prevent premature aging of the skin. Essence is a cosmetic that contains topical antioxidants. Essence has advantages over other skincare products, and essence is easier to absorb into the skin. The objective of the present study was to optimize and evaluate the Essence of sappan wood ethanolic extract for treatment as a cosmetic antioxidant. Simplex lattice design was adopted to evaluate the effect of butylene glycol and glycerin concentration on Essence characteristics. The method used in the extraction is maceration with ethanol solvent. The results showed that both butylene glycol and glycerin significantly enhanced the viscosity and pH value of the sappan essence formulation. The optimum Essence formula consisted of 10% butylene glycol with a predicted viscosity value of 2,944 dPas and a pH of 5,075. The characteristics of the optimum formula of sappan wood extract Essence have a thick texture, a characteristic odor of colored extract brownish yellow, homogeneous, and has a spreadabillity of 14 cm.

Abstract

Cimetidine is an H2 receptor antagonist which can be used to reduce acid secretion in the stomach by inhibiting selective binding of histamine to H2 receptors so that it can reduce the concentration of cyclic-adenosine monophosphate (c-AMP) which plays a role in the proton pump mechanism. The combination of floating and mucoadhesive systems is used to increase drug retention in the stomach so that it can reduce the drug interval and increase bioavailability of the drug. The purpose of this study was to make floating-mucoadhesive cimetidine tablets using Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) as a floating polymer and chitosan as a mucoadhesive polymer. Tablets are expected to have the ability to maintain the dosage form in the stomach for approximately 12 hours. The evaluations carried out included the flow characteristics and the angle repose of the powder mixture, tablet weight uniformity, tablet hardness, tablet friability, floating lag time, floating duration time and tablet mucoadhesive strength. The responses observed were the ability to float and the mucoadhesive strength of tablets. The tablet release test (dissolution) for the optimum formula was performed to determine the character of tablet release. The optimum amount for HPMC is 146,686 mg and chitosan are 50 mg. The combination of polymers with this amount produces a floating lag time of 43,458 seconds, floating duration time >12 hours and the strength of mucoadhesive is 100 grams. The release of the optimum formula in the 720th minute is about 73,180% following the Higuchi release model with dissolution efficiency (DE720) about 67,855%.

Abstract

Avobenzone and octinoxate are often used as a combination of organic UV filters in sunscreen. At high exposure to UV light, these UV filters can be degraded so that their sunscreen’s effectiveness is reduced. Several studies reported that the combination of plant extracts with synthetic UV filters could increase sunscreen's SPF. Mango leaves contain high levels of flavonoids and in several studies have been shown to have photoprotective activity with good Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values. The Manalagi mango plant is a type of mango that is widely planted in yards, so it's easy to get the raw materials. This study aims to determine the effect of manalagi mango leaf extract with a concentration of 1, 3, and 5% on the physical quality (pH, viscosity, spreadability) and sunscreen activity (SPF, %TE, %TP) of sunscreen emulgel containing avobenzone and octinoxate. This study showes that increasing the concentration of manalagi mango leaf extract reduced the pH and viscosity of the preparation, and significantly increased the spreadability of all formulas. Besides that, it can also increase the SPF value and decrease the %TE and %TP values. The emulgel formula that had the highest sunscreen activity was F3 with an extract concentration of 5%, had an SPF value of 30.597 ± 0.600, %TE 0.0001 ± 0.0001, and %TP 0.0038 ± 0.0016.
