Abstract

Phrasal verbs pose challenges for interpretation due to unpredictable meanings. This study examined how image schemas aid comprehension from linguistic and philosophical viewpoints. A literature review methodology integrated insights from cognitive linguistics, philosophy of language, and related fields to provide a comprehensive understanding. Linguistically, image schemas offer a cognitive framework for processing phrasal verbs by mapping meanings to embodied experiences. Philosophically, schemas reflect how language emerges from and shapes conceptualization. Comparative analysis showed linguistics emphasizes schemas' mental role in comprehension, while philosophy explores their existential significance. Results identified schemas like CONTAINER and PATH that extend metaphorically from physical interactions to abstract phrasal verb meanings. Linguistically, schemas provide a framework for analyzing structures and meanings. Philosophically, schemas reflect language's emergence from embodiment and influence on thought. Teaching implications were to connect phrasal verbs to familiar embodied experiences through schemas. Theoretical implications were that schemas are fundamental to thought and linguistic expressions. By synthesizing perspectives, this study enhanced understanding of the intricate cognitive mechanisms linking schemas to phrasal verbs. It highlighted implications for language education and advances in interdisciplinary inquiry into embodied cognition and communication.

Abstract

The relevance of traditional media in English Language Teaching (ELT) has come under increasing scrutiny due to the proliferation of digital technologies. This study aims to investigate whether traditional media still hold relevance in the modern ELT classroom, amidst widespread adoption of digital tools. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative surveys of 100 students and qualitative interviews with five English lecturers at Padang State Polytechnic, Indonesia. The survey results indicate varied perceptions: while traditional media are valued for their structured and reliable content, they lack the interactivity and engagement offered by digital media. Findings reveal that 65% of students find digital media easier to understand, and 70% prefer digital tools over traditional resources. Interviews with lecturers highlight the necessity of a balanced, blended approach that integrates both traditional and digital media to enhance learning outcomes and cater to diverse student needs. The study concludes that a blended approach is optimal, combining the stability and reliability of traditional resources with the dynamic, engaging capabilities of digital tools. The implications of this study underscore the importance of digital literacy training for educators and suggest future research should focus on the long-term effects of blended learning, addressing accessibility and equity issues in digital media use.

Abstract

Investigating a teacher's beliefs in language teaching is something that needs to be explored. Especially in teaching EFL Writing, examining language teacher beliefs is interested because it can be a benchmark for educators on how EFL Writing teaching happens. In addition, teacher beliefs will also help teachers and learners understand the process of learning. There have been many studies on teacher beliefs towards various English language teaching in Indonesia. However, most of these studies discuss teacher beliefs at the high school level. There is a lack of research on teacher beliefs at the university level. This study focuses on teacher beliefs research on EFL Writing teachers at the university student level. This research used a qualitative method with a case study research design. Observation and in-depth interviews are the instruments of this research. The object of the research is an experienced lecturer at Padang State Polytechnic who has been teaching EFL Writing for approximately 11 years. The results of this study show that the lecturer has several teacher beliefs that he believes to be the basic principles in teaching EFL writing. In addition, in the classroom practice, the lecturer used explicit teaching strategy in teaching EFL Writing. Although there are some difficulties faced by the lecturer in his teaching.

Abstract

This study critically analyzes Nadiem Makarim's 2024 National Education Day speech, focusing on how language reflects and reshapes power dynamics and ideology within Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar (Independent Learning) reform initiative. The research seeks to answer two key questions: how does the speech frame educational reform through discourse, and how does it distribute power and convey participatory ideology? Using Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model and van Dijk’s Power and Ideology framework, this qualitative study examines the textual, discursive, and social practices within the speech. The findings reveal that the speech strategically emphasizes decentralization, teacher and student empowerment, and cultural values of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) while reframing challenges, such as the pandemic, as opportunities for systemic change. These results suggest that the speech functions as a tool to foster collective responsibility and support for long-term educational reform. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers to adopt inclusive, culturally resonant discourse to ensure effective communication of reform initiatives. Future research could explore the long-term impact of such discourse on policy implementation across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study explored the integration of syntax mapping and shift strategy instruction to enhance translation competence in vocational education. Framed within a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach, the study addressed common challenges among novice translators, including literal translation tendencies, syntactic rigidity, and low awareness of pragmatic shifts. Conducted in an Indonesian polytechnic with 25 students, the intervention followed four DBR phases: needs analysis, tool design, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, worksheet tasks, and student reflections. Descriptive results indicated improvement in translation test scores (from 64.3 to 78.4) and syntax mapping accuracy (from 62.3% to 76.0%), along with increased application of lexical, class, and structural shifts. Student reflections revealed enhanced metacognitive awareness and more analytical decision making. However, the study did not include hypothesis testing or inferential statistics; therefore, claims regarding the tool’s effectiveness are based on observed descriptive gains and should be interpreted with caution. Additionally, the small sample size and specific vocational context limit generalizability. Future studies should incorporate statistical analyses and broader samples to validate the impact and explore applicability across different educational contexts and language pairs.

Abstract

Preparing students for professional communication in English for Journalism requires more than linguistic accuracy; it demands authentic, workplace-oriented learning environments that replicate editorial processes. Despite the increasing use of project-based learning (PBL) in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), few studies have examined digital newsroom simulations aligned with vocational “teaching factory” models. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Crewpers, a student-developed digital journalism platform designed as an authentic newsroom simulation, in enhancing vocational English for Journalism instruction. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed with 16 students enrolled in the D4 English for Business and Professional Communication program at a public polytechnic in Indonesia. Using a validated 16-item questionnaire, student perceptions were measured across four dimensions: critical thinking, collaboration, journalistic production, and communication. Paired-sample t-test results revealed statistically significant improvements in all dimensions (p < .001), with the largest gains observed in journalistic production, where students reported greater confidence in producing publishable news content. Students also highlighted features such as real-time editorial feedback, role distribution, and public publishing as central to their learning gains. These findings suggest that Crewpers effectively bridges ESP instruction with professional performance tasks, offering a replicable model of simulation-based pedagogy for vocational contexts. While limited by sample size and reliance on self-reported data, this study underscores the pedagogical value of integrating digital newsroom platforms into ESP and recommends future research using mixed-method designs to assess long-term impacts on writing quality and professional readiness.

Abstract

Linguistic landscape refers to the visibility of languages in public spaces through written signs that reflect both communication and identity. This study examines the linguistic landscape and cultural identity of Sanjai shop signs in Bukittinggi and its surrounding areas, including Agam Regency. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through direct observation, documentation using photographs, and interviews with shop owners. The study focuses on the languages and symbols appearing on the shop signs and their meanings. The results show that Sanjai shop signs feature monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual expressions. The monolingual signs use Minangnese, Indonesian, or Bataknese, while the bilingual signs combine Minangnese and Indonesian. Bilingual signs serve to convey both local identity and product appeal to a wider audience. The use of Bataknese in border areas illustrates language adaptation along major trade routes like the Trans-Sumatra Highway. Non-linguistic signs such as Rumah Gadang motifs, Jam Gadang images, Sianok Canyon pictures, and Marawa colors strengthen the cultural identity of Minangkabau. The study concludes that Sanjai shop signs are not only commercial tools but also media for preserving and promoting Minangkabau cultural identity through both linguistic and visual elements.

Abstract

Phrasal verb is one aspect of English that is often avoided by EFL learners, including students in Indonesia. This is usually due to the method of learning phrasal verbs that tends to make it difficult for learners. Hence, this research tries to present how cognitive linguistics affects Indonesian students’ understanding of learning phrasal verbs. This research takes about 50 students of Padang State Polytechnic, Indonesia as the research subject. The students were divided into two groups: those who learned phrasal verbs with the traditional method and those with the cognitive linguistics method. Each group of students was taught by different lecturers who used cognitive linguistics and traditional methods. Then, the students were tested on their understanding of phrasal verbs. This study employed a quasi-experimental causal-comparative research design; this research revealed that learning phrasal verbs with the cognitive linguistics method is able to produce a significant understanding of students’ ability to understand phrasal verbs. The results of the test found that students who learned phrasal verbs with the cognitive linguistics method had a score of 80 in understanding the meaning of phrasal verbs and a score of 76.8 in applying phrasal verbs in English sentences. While the test results of the traditional method group showed less good results. In-depth interviews, and questionnaires from this research show that cognitive linguistics method helps students in understanding the meaning of phrasal verbs although there are weaknesses in applying phrasal verbs into English sentences. The implication of this research finding is that cognitive linguistics method can be an effective approach for teaching phrasal verbs to EFL students.
