Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the application of the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) technique can improve students' reading skills in narrative texts. The study sampled 30 students from class IX-4 of SMPN 4 Gorontalo. To collect data, a multiple-choice test was used adapted from various fairy tale stories, including "Why Frogs and Mosquitoes are Enemies," "Unhelpful Friends," "The Hungry Mouse," "The Lion and the Mouse," "A Proud Tiger," and "A Cat and a Fox." The study employed a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. Results show that the mean score of the pre-test was 14.47, while the mean score of the post-test was 19.4. The hypothesis testing revealed that tcount ≥ tlist with a value of 18.84 2.048, indicating that the research hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) technique can improve the reading skills of class IX-4 students at SMP N 4 Gorontalo.

Abstract

Listening is one of the most challenging skills for students to master, and innovative media are required to make the learning process more engaging and effective. This study aims to identify students perceptions of using the LingoClip application as a medium for learning listening. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design involving students from SMP Bone as participants. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed five emerging themes. Students perceived LingoClip as a fun and enjoyable learning medium that created a relaxed and positive atmosphere. The application was considered easy to use, with clear audio quality and supporting visual features that facilitated comprehension. Students demonstrated high motivation and confidence in using LingoClip and expressed a desire to reuse it in future lessons. However, some reported technical issues such as limited internet access and small screen sizes. Overall, LingoClip positively influenced students learning experiences by fostering enjoyment, motivation, and confidence, demonstrating its potential as an effective tool for listening instruction.

Abstract

This research analyzes the use of swear words in the 2014 film Fury, directed by David Ayer. It explores the types of swear words used by characters and the sociolinguistic factors triggering their usage. Language serves as a dynamic medium for expressing emotions, norms, and culture; Thus, understanding its variations is crucial, especially among youth who frequently use toxic language. The study adopts Andersson's (1992) classification of swear words into four types: expletive, abusive, humorous, and auxiliary. Additionally, it employs Staley's (1978) framework to identify social triggers for swearing, such as emotional expression and social bonding. The film's portrayal of American soldiers during World War II illustrates how extreme circumstances can normalize the use of profane language. This research aims to enhance awareness of sociolinguistic dynamics in contemporary discourse, emphasizing the importance of context in the interpretation of swearing. The findings will provide insights for English language educators and students, highlighting the need for understanding cultural nuances in language use. Ultimately, this study seeks to foster responsible communication practices while recognizing the role of swear words in everyday interactions and social contexts.

Abstract

This article investigates how stigma around so-called “gang hand signs” is produced, circulated, andnegotiated in TikTok comments. Drawing on a case-bounded corpus of 675 comments posted under fivevideos from the account TopNotch Idiots (posted in 2023; comments captured in 2025), the analysisintegrates critical sociolinguistics and language-ideological perspectives with the concepts ofenregisterment and platformed racism. We operationalize a two-layer coding scheme: stigma processes(labeling, stereotyping, separation/status loss, discrimination) and sociolinguistic lenses (indexicals ofrisk, digital gatekeeping, platformed racism cues, moral-panic rhetoric). Findings show that gestures areenregistered as a default “danger register,” normalizing punitive discourse (“deserve to get hurt”);commenters perform outsider exclusion and moral boundary-making; and racialized/locational cuesalign with platformed racism, intensified by platform affordances and virality. We discuss implicationsfor critical media literacy and English language pedagogy in Indonesia, arguing that user-generateddiscourse not only mainstream media now participates in the production of stigma and public moralities. The study contributes to research on indexicality, platform governance, and digital vigilantism, andsuggests ethics-oriented classroom practices for interrogating harmful registers online.

Abstract

This research addresses the limitations of pragmatic studies focusing on directive acts within the high-pressure context of modern military action movies. The study aims to investigate the types and situational aspects of the functions of directive acts used by main characters in The Expendables 4 (2023). Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research integrates Searle's (1975), taxonomy directive acts with Leech's (1983) framework of situational aspects to analyze movie dialogue. Data collection involved watching the movie, transcribing relevant scenes, and classifying utterances based on Searle's (1975) and Leech's (1983). The findings revealed 30 directive utterances, categorized into five types: 15 commands, 6 warnings, 4 requests, 3 instructions, and 2 suggestions. Commands were the most dominant form of the data, which reflects the hierarchical and urgent nature of military operations where immediate compliance is critical. The study concludes that situational urgency and combat intensity have a direct impact on the linguistic realization of directive acts, favoring brevity and force over politeness, but cooperative directive acts like requests and suggestions still play a strategic role in team coordination.
