Abstract

This study aims to reveal the production of consonant sounds in children aged 6-9 years old whose first language is Indonesian and/or Gorontalo language, as well as to reveal the facts about the consonant sounds that can and cannot be produced by the children. This study applied qualitative method by collecting the data using audio and video recording to record the consonant sounds produced by the participants, and transcribing the sounds using IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). The data of this study were taken from School-Age Children from six until nine years old, that consisted of five students from Ronal Hutagalung Learning Center. The data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data display, and the drawing and verifying conclusion. Furthermore, the classification of NAE Consonant Phonemes by Parker (1986) was used as the main theory in data analysis. The findings show that from five participants, three participants can produce 23 consonant sounds, and two participants can produce 24 consonant sounds. In addition, the results also show that the participants were mostly unable to produce consonants Voiceless Dental Fricative /θ/, Voiced Palatal Fricative /ʒ/, Voiced Palatal Glide /y/, Voiceless Palatal Fricative /ʃ/, and Voiced Dental Fricative /ð/, which means that most of the sounds that they cannot produce are the consonants that do not exist in their first language. The findings of this study are expected to be a reference in teaching English pronunciation to children, as well as overcoming the problems related to the consonant production in children.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the types of morphological interference on students' English writing. Through qualitative research method applying a design of the case study, twenty of university students were chosen. Data were collected from written tests and classified based on the Politzer and Ramires (1973) on theory of Linguistic Category. The results revealed that, whilst it is inevitable that the English morphology features governed by the distinctive rules and systems have been the potential target for interference taking place, Bahasa Indonesia, which stands as the official language, becomes the source of transfer. From six types of morphological interference based on Polizter and Ramirez’ (1973), in this study the writer only found three of them. These types encompass of the morphological properties from the use of article, plural marker and simple past tense. Furthermore, there are 40 morphological mistakes in total, in which four mistakes represent the intralingual transfer and 36 data describe the interference. In terms of the mistakes made as a result mostly from the interference transfer. This study makes a significant contribution to the teaching and learning process of linguistic interference. Keywords: linguistic interference; morphology; students’ writing.

Abstract

The mobile intensive course (MIC) application version 2 is an application created to assist the learning process of the English intensive course. Measurement of the usability of the MIC version 2 application has never been done before, so the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction for this application have not been measured. In addition, usability measurement can be used as a reference for the level of user loyalty, whether including net promoters, passive users, or detractors. One of the usability measuring tools that are easy to use, the calculation is simple and can be used on a small sample, but still valid and reliable is the System Usability Scale (SUS). The purpose of this study was to test the usability of the MIC version 2 application to determine the quality of this application using the SUS questionnaire. This research was conducted in four steps, namely 1) piloting the MIC version 2 application to the respondents; 2) distributing SUS questionnaires to respondents to be filled out manually or online; 3) calculating the average SUS score; 4) analyzing the mean SUS score. This study involved 37 respondents consisting of students and lecturers of EIC. The results of this study indicate that the usability of the MIC version 2 application can be accepted by users with an average SUS score of 70.61 and get category C based on the CGS assessment. When viewed from the level of user loyalty, the average SUS score for this application only results in passive users. The average value of the contribution to learnability obtained is still low, which is 1.9 from the maximum value of 4. Improvements are needed in future applications in terms of application learnability, such as simplifying the appearance of features and functions in the application, thus allowing users to be more familiar with applications and potential as net promoters.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to elucidate students' perspectives on grammar teaching methods. It observed 5th-semester students from the 2019 academic year, in English Language Education Study Program. Five students were chosen at random from each class, so the total sample for this study was 25. The descriptive quantitative research method was applied to this study. The information was gathered using a questionnaire that represented two grammar teaching methods: explicit and implicit. Each one consists of six statements, with several options for students to choose from, including strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree. The findings revealed that each student has a different perspective on what method is required. The questionnaire results showed that approximately 80% of students agreed with every statement in the explicit method, and the majority of them chose neutral to the statements in the implicit method, with an average percentage of 37%-70%. As a result, students can be taught using both implicit and explicit methods, as both have advantages, and it is determined by the needs of each student.
